Inspired by one of your previous vids I bought one of those 12 string HB's. 2 problems I was not ready for. No.1, the neck on that thing was WIDE and what strong fingers one must train to have if you could play a song straight through! (played for over 25 years) No.2 , I like a guitar in tune but with this beast I met my match. I kid you not the first time I got it in tune properly it took 20 mins. Every time after there would always be constant tweaking. So I have lived the fantasy and it's not a world I want to revisit any time soon. Shame as I would have loved keeping it for the odd recording.
@randyrowell80483 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard that you spend half your time tuning the 12-string and the other half playing out of tune, lol. I’ve got an acoustic 12-string that I love and have never had an issue with. I’ve been thinking about an electric so I really appreciate your post.
@stankruger68233 жыл бұрын
I bought one and it was crap. Returned it for another and I can't be more pleased with it. I've had the same experience that Mark mentioned in that it NEVER goes out of tune. Make sure you tell Mark about it. He had some kind of disagreement with Thomann but I bet he'll contact them for you.
@roklok98563 жыл бұрын
I own two HBs, one is fabulous one is about exactly what I'd expect from a $250 guitar. For $500 or $600 Check out Eastwood and Danelectro. If you're willing to spend $700 you can get a Schecter or a used Fender XII. Both are high end, well built guitars.
@8MinuteAxe3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Can you send me a detailed email about the issues you've had with it? I do have a contact at Thomann although they aren't very good at getting back. I've had great luck but I know it can be hit or miss. I just measured it and it's the exact same width at the nut as the Eastwood and the Takamine. The Taylor is slightly wider. Depth wise it's thinner than the two acoustics and maybe a couple of millimeters wider than the Eastwood. The Rick is smaller. That's usually the knock on the Rick. Most people like it wider because it's tougher to get clean notes on a crowded fretboard. I will tell you, my HB is the easiest guitar to play of any of my 12 strings, electric or acoustic. Is this your first 12 string? Acoustic 12s are much tougher to fret. I suggest you find somebody local that's reputable and have it set up and make sure the intonation is good. Mine never goes out of tune. Perhaps one of the tuning pegs isn't set properly. If you're a pitch nazi, you're never gonna be satisfied with a 12 string. A guitar is a tempered instrument. It's never completely in tune. When I'm recording or doing a show, I always tune with my peterson strobe tuner and then make micro adjustments depending on what and where on the fretboard I'm playing. I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with it. Mark
@8MinuteAxe3 жыл бұрын
A lot of people discuss tuning. I think a lot of people either aren't used to tuning their guitars or they haven't developed an ear for what 'in tune' is. These days, you can get a free tuner on your phone that's pretty close. You can get a strobe tuner for less than $200 if you're anal like me. As far as the 12 string goes, if you're way out, you have to get into relative tune and then go back and tune again. It should take longer than 3 minutes if the intonation is good. Even if you have to compensate a bit, if it's taking more than 5 minutes, just practice hitting the note and smoothly moving it up into pitch. Remember, if you strike the strings too hard they are going to ring sharp, especially the low E and A. Like anything else, it takes practice. It used to take me 30 minutes to string a guitar, now I can do it in less than 6 minutes. Practice..and the right tools. :)

Thanks to both of you for your time and comments. I love the conversation about classic rock. Michael, I'm glad you love the Eastwood. People keep asking me about this and that and I tell them the best part is the sound. It doesn't sound like any other electric 12 that I've played. Well done! Your top ten are certainly among my favourites too. But I would always want to include Jackie DeShannon's 'When You Walk in the Room' in any top ten 12 string list. It's not my favourite. That position will always be held by 'Turn, Turn, Turn' by the Byrds . By the way, I like your Eastwood 12. In appearance it resembles a Gretsch. Have you had a chance to try the Gretsch G5422G-12 electromatic? If so, what is your opinion?

Hey Ross. I really dig your hat in the pic. I haven't really worn a hat since I played baseball in high school and through college (wearing a baseball hat, not playing college baseball. I went to UCONN. They would have wiped the floor with me). I've played a few Gretsch guitars over the years. They always seem stiff to me and even though I've kind of become the 12 string guy on youtube, I do prefer a smaller neck whenever I can get away with it. The neck on my PRS is like a toothpick. LOL. The Eastwood plays well but the best part is when you plug it in. You can REALLY dial in the VINTAGE RICK sound...better than the new Rick with the hotter pickups. Beyond that it has a unique tone all its own that I really like. You get a taste of the sound I'm talking about on Look Through Any Window. I didn't really make it sound like the original because I was so happy with the sound of the guitar I didn't want to change it. That tone may be my favorite 12 string guitar sound ever. But then again, I'm prone to hyperbole. :). When You walk in the Room is on my master list and the 12 string part is great on it. I like the song but don't love it. World without Love by Peter and Gordon is another one that I like but don't love. the video cracks me up. What the heck are they doing during the solo break. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I appreciate your time and comments. Enjoy the rest of your week and take care. When I was a kid I used to borrow my dad's Byrd's Greatest Hits cassette tape and I would play 8 Miles High over and over again. It is one of the best rock songs of all time and underappreciated.

Just another great video from whom I consider the master of the 12 string. I just bought a RIK 360 1993 plus and I've died and gone to RIK heaven!

Keep remembering my buddies Yamaha 12 string. Played it every chance I got but that was the 70s. After stumbling over this channel,.. I've started playing my old acoustic again and hungering for a 12 string again. 😅 Maybe one day I'll finally get one. Ha! 😆

Are you pulling my leg Mondragon. They've been around for about 100 years and were first made popular by mexican corridos and American blues artists. Great sound, especially the acoustic 12. I appreciate you checking the video out. Have a great evening and take care. Mark

Fun video. Can't argue with any of the choices, but Buck's 12 string on many R.E.M. songs are definitely worth a top 10 or 12 list!

It'd be nice to see the 12 string make a comeback in today's music, but then again it would just be nice to see rock or just music in general make a comeback!

That was an awesome video, Mark! All of those songs are from a time when I had more hair and money! I would really like to ask you to do a special video sometime... please consider doing the whole song of Stairway to Heaven. Vocals too, since you have a great voice! That would just be so great!
That was a good solid list of 12 string hits. Out of all the guitars featured here I think the Eastwood 12 string sounded the best overall. It looked great also. I own a few Different Eastwoods and they sound great and play well as many of them are my go to guitars. I also am not a spokesman or a rep for Eastwood just a studio musician that likes them.

Just got my first 12, a Dano 59x12. Started playing in 75. Styx! I actually took lessons from JC for a year or so in the 80’s and he did sound and a demo for us. Don’t know why I waited so long to get a 12. Thanks Mark, I know this stuff takes a lot of time to do. Wow how many 12’s do you have?

If I can EVER get mine in tune (1 month & 4 broken strings-so far) I`ll learn to play these, but you keep going mate, you are an inspiration to me (Got any spare octave G strings you could post to Scotland)?
@8MinuteAxe3 жыл бұрын
Email me at markaranalli@gmail.com if you need some help. Here's the short of it. Make sure that you're using a 10 or 11 for the high G. D'Addario comes with an 8 , Martin a 10. I always tune a step down for about 10 minutes and then bring it up to pitch. If you're snapping a 10 or 11, take a look at the saddle and nut. It may be a bit sharp. As far as tuning goes, keep a couple of things in mind. First you want to tune all the strings to relative pitch. Then go back and fine tune. There's no reason to fine tune you're A strings if your low Es or your higher strings are significantly out. They're just gonna pull the As back out. Go from low to high. Relative tune, then go back and fine tune. Remember that the guitar is a tempered instrument and technically it's never in perfect tune. 12 strings just exacerbate this. If you have a great ear for pitch, the guitar may not sound in perfect tune even when all the strings are in tune. If I'm recording a part, I sometimes have to modify a note a tiny bit for the part I'm playing. If the next part is higher up the neck, maybe another small adjustment. If it's really out, have a luthier set the intonation. If it's an electric, you should be able to do it yourself. Let me know if this helps at all. Love the screen name. It's funny, when I was trying to think of a name for the channel, 8 Minute Axe seemed so great. I loved the play on 8 Minute Abs. It's like band names though. A couple of weeks later, I was just stuck with it. LOL. AND, I have a slight speech impediment and I have trouble pronouncing the word AXE. DOH. Anyway, thanks so much for your time and comment. you said it was played on a Vox Phantom. also very cool. i love the Phantom shape. but i saw them on the old Ed Sullivan Show and he was playing a teardrop shaped Vox. i sent you a couple emails asking about it but i know you can't read them all. so i looked it up on duck duck go and found it. weird guitar. i thought it was a 12 string lute when i first saw it.. check out the video of it.
