You Can't Do That and Polythene Pam both made my top 75 as did Seeger's version of the Bells of Rhymney. Needles and Pins was on my original list of about 110. California Girls wasn't on the list. California Girls and Help Me Rhonda and Hurricane are all tough to rank. All have a 12 string but would they really be considered 12 string songs enough to crack the top 50. Great video! Awesome choice of songs, many of them my favourites. Suite Madame Blue is one of the songs that drove me to the 12-string guitar, followed by Give a Little Bit. But any of your choices are great tunes to play on 12-strings! Interesing...you put Starship Trooper, which was inspried by the book Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein, a book about fighting an interstellar war with only slower than light ships that are subject the effects of time dilation due to travelling at near reletivistic speeds between the stars. It is followed by another science fiction oriented song, '39 by Queen. It is another song is also about the effects of time dilation from travelling closer to the speed of light. Interestingly it seems that it is a popular subject for rock musicians. Off the top of my head, I can name at least a three other songs about the same subject...Spirit of the Age by Hawkwind, Aldebaran by the Canadian band FM, and interstingly, a song by Enya about the same subject with the same title as the FM song, Aldebaran.

Hi Mark. Been playing 12-strings since I was 14 - I'm 73 now! I've only got two - it looks like you've got two too - DOZEN! I have a Maton that I've had for 50 years that Tommy Emmanuel says sounds superb, and a 1982 Guild D212 like Tom Petty played on Free Fallin'. One thing that surprises me is that you only have a Guild Starfire in your collection! Guild 12's are THE definitive 12-strings that everyone else aspires to - many of the other makes sound weak compared to them. As for favorite 12-string songs, any of Gordon Lightfoot's music where he was playing his 12-string is incredible - he had an unbelievable rhythm that few others could achieve, especially on songs like Canadian Railroad Trilogy! And I'm sure you've seen John Butler's home studio version of Ocean - THAT'S mindblowing! Great selection though, and great playing!

You Can't Do That, I Feel Fine, and Polythene Pam just missed the cut. I've done I Call Your Name and several other Beatles tunes on the channel but I think there are too many other great songs as blasphemous as that is to say. LOL. @@8MinuteAxe Glad you caught that Mark. When I saw you state (I Feel Fine ) I couldn't understand your choice. 8 Days a week oh yeah on the 12 string. I think after( If I needed Someone ) on Rubber Soul George never played his Ric 12 string on a Beatles song again.
@gdkopinionator435611 ай бұрын
"Starship Trooper" and "And You And I" are inspired choices! I think that Steve Howe's 12-string work is some of the warmest ever recorded. I think that I would add some Genesis to the list though. They were known for their "twin 12-string" concept at one time. Rutherford and Anthony Phillips used to play together in arrangements that almost sounded like a harpsichord. That was eventually revisited on "Trick Of The Tail" after Peter Gabriel left. "Ripples" and "Entangled" are amazing.
@8MinuteAxe11 ай бұрын
The problem with putting a Genesis tune on a countdown like this is that the handful of songs that I could actually take a 15 second segment of and have it sound great are not really their best songs. The classics don't really have a singular part per se, at least not the ones I consider classics.
@gdkopinionator435611 ай бұрын
@@8MinuteAxe That makes sense. Those two tracks that I mentioned are quite beautiful, but there is no standout performance of 12 string. It's just a matter of how beautifully it is assimilated into those pieces. A piece like "Blood on the Rooftops", however has a featured guitar part - but it's classical not 12-string. Unlike a lot of progressive organizations, Genesis seemed to really frown upon overt displays of virtuosity.

California Dreamin' has no 12 string in the original even though John used one almost exclusively live. As Tears Go By actually made the top 50 but I lost the performance during editing so I quickly added another. Substitute, You Can't Do That, Polythene Pam, You Wear it Well, Crystal Ball, Xanadu, all just missed the cut.
@alkitzman917911 ай бұрын
Interesting Mark about California Dreaming not having a 12 on the recording. Of course I/we always played that with a 12 string. Also on Polythene Pam as you know was the last Beatles track with a 12 string on it. And it was John not George playing that part. Just a great start for your Channel to ring in the New Year. Hey M2T. I was 10 when MTV premiered and it seemed that the longer the decade went on, the worse the music got. Thankfully, in the 90s, I went to 100s of concerts. Some were great, some were awful but I always said yes when the opportunity arose. Looking back on it now what I wouldn't give for "80s type music" again and thank God I went to all of those concerts. If I'd have known I was witnessing Rock n' Roll's last gasp, I would have spent all of my time going to concerts. I also performed a few hundred concerts in the 90s. Although my songs and my band never hit the big time (never even any form of national attention actually), I couldn't be more grateful that I chose this is a career. Mark, this was a righteous list: besides the obvious ones, you didn’t forget to included stuff from Leo Kottke [how could any 12-string list possibly omit him?], the Animals, Question, America, If I needed someone, Walk Right In, 8 miles high. some of the younger crowd might not even know some of these songs, but the influence they had in their time was tremendous, so you gave them their proper place. The only omission I would mention would be As Tears Go By.

So many more songs than I realized had 12-strings in them. I really learned a lot.

Awesome channel! Thank you Just got my very 1st 12 str a late 70s Yamaha (also doubles as my first project guitar because it’s just about unplayable as it is), and to stumble onto your channel is a gift Cheers, and rock on Edit- also I feel this doesn’t need to be said but no contest - this is the top tier best 12 string video out here in the interweb. Respect and kudos

Mark, I just noticed you had added '39 to the list. It is one of my favs, so appreciate it and I believe I recommended it to you before.

Haven’t played my Memphis ES-335 12 string in almost 10 years and now I want to. Very nice job! No Gibson 12? Now I just got to figure out which bed it’s under.

LOL. One of my viewers just got a vintage and another "picked one up" two days ago. I'm not such if it's new or what. I have the Memphis 335 6 string. It's actually in my lap right now. I use it for slide occasionally. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I appreciate your time. Have a great weekend. Mark.

This is so much fun to watch. Love that your playing seems so precise and conscientious. As for omissions, I'm sure I saw a video of Heart going to town on a 12-string for "Silver Wheels" / "Crazy on You".

For myself? Agree or not? That was a lot of fun & well played Thanks Boss. You made me want to pick up that old Ovation 12; that's been sitting on it's stand ignored. I'll see if I still remember those America songs I got it for. "Sister Golden Hair". Here I come.. lol

Hey Mark. A really eclectic selection. Can’t really argue with any of them. Good to see a couple of Steve Howe numbers. As a personal preference I’d have probably included one of Greg Lake’s numbers. Either “Still….You Turn Me On” or “C’est La Vie”. Love the Rok-Lok by the way.

Way cool! I was about to be righteous indignant about Walk Right In not making the list when you started playing it. I didn’t really expect to see Leadbelly. …These days nobody buys em. But I will! Three killer Leadbelly songs In New Orleans John Hardy In the Pines

Great work as always! As a minor point, I might have put the artist name in addition to the song title, but that's just me. I love the big body tak! And enjoy that we got to see you playing bass as well!

A little late to the party this time - sorry! It as always, not disappointed! I’m sure that there are probably 50 other great songs that feature or major on the glorious 12 string guitar but I’m very happy with your selection mate - great job 👏 👍😎🎶

Lots of your song selections I didn't know but the Sixties and early Seventies were very recognizable to me. I'm pretty much Fifties,Sixties, and early Seventies myself.

An excellent list! I didn't realize that so many of those songs were done with a 12 string. My personal pick for #1 would be "Eight Miles High" with it's great solo...

Hey Mark, yet another great video. You are the 12 String Maestro! A few more to consider ... Needles and Pins by Smokie (covering The Searchers). Senses Working Overtime by XTC (David Gregory is a 12 string champ.) The Waiting by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Cheers from the Land Down Under (where decent 12 string guitars are going up in price by the minute. Alright if you already own some. Terrible if you don't)

Well that must have been a labour of love - so much work! I must admit I hadn't heard of some of the songs in the lower orders, and I also wondered if some were done with a 6 string and a Nashville tuned guitar, but every time I checked you had it right. My only petty niggles would be that a couple of other Lightfoot songs might have got in there - his work is so centred on 12 string, and I would have put 8 miles high further up the list; it has some of the most iconic electric 12 string riffs in history plus the solo. But, honestly, this was a real tour de force from you, both in terms of selection and as a demonstration of how to play 12 string at its best.
