You know for me there is a certaint point where i feel that a game is hard but fair or just plain old bullshit. For example games like Dark Souls, Meatboy or Hotline Miami are hard but fair because everytime i die it feels more like my own fault and by avoiding my mistake i can actually move on (although i probably will never be as good as some people are in Meatboy i just leave it at beating the game with a keyboard and your feet). This way the game encourages me to try again and get better as i move along. It also helps that a lot of hard but fair games don't really penalize you for dieing to often or if they do it mostly is just a minor inconvinience (like loosing all your souls in DS is pretty minor). And then you got the bullshitfest that are games like IWBTG, Lost Levels or Battletoads where even if you really put all manners of skill into it you still will fail over and over again and by the end it really is nothing but trial on error until you somehow beat a stage and can move on. That's not good designe that's just extending gametime by making it as hard as possible for the player to get through. And the biggest part for me is that games like these are just not fun when i have to see the game over screen 100+ times just to finally see the end credits and be done with the game.

But when you play it for the first time, without ever playing anything like or looking at 'guides', the game can and will stomp on you. But if we're also using that rule... then half the nes library would be literally unbeatable. Try beating Zelda 2 or Dragon quest 2 with no guide. It's near impossible. Takeshi's Challenge. The whole game is basically that guy from Takeshi's Challenge/MXC trolling you the entire game. It's ridiculous, unintuitive, utterly unfair in ways Battletoards and IWBTG could only DREAM of being, includes solutions to puzzles that you would never in a million years figure out on your own and the game sure as hell isn't going to tell you, and anyone masochistic enough to play it all the way through to the end gets to watch the game basically make fun of you for wasting your time playing it.

That game isn't so much 'hard' as it is just a complete guessing game to figure out what to do. Once you know what to do, it's still not easy, but not nearly as hard as the games on this list.

+Mr Madness Yeah, to me, Dark Souls always appeared to be a "git gud" kinda game. In which once you properly understand all of its mechanics, it gets much easier. A bit like Monster Hunter, actually. Not anywhere close to games where even once you fully understand how to play them, they still keep forcing you to be so ridiculously precise that you almost have to either memorize every single obstacle by heart, or start developing superhuman reflexes.

"Difficulty" doesn't just mean twitch reflexes or precise movement. Having to keep a lot of factors in mind also contributes to difficulty. Take classic roguelikes, for example. You have all the time in the world to consider your next move, but they're still known to be extremely difficult because missing a piece of information often leads to death. I get the feeling that's not what Rabbidluig means, though. Given the rest of this list, he seems to mostly focus on games requiring quick reaction times.

+Nixitur From what I am taking from this, I think he means how hard games can be to complete without suffering more than a few game over screens or deaths. I wanna be the Guy and Super Meat Boy, for example, fit taht perfectly, likely ranking in the constant thousands of deaths before a full completion, or F-Zero GX liking to wall you in chapters 6, 7, and 9. (Speed-sensitive bombs, an AI that cheats to an extent [extra boost power on black bull and blood hawk], and a track that has zero railings whatsoever which means no forgiveness if you screw up your turns.) Lost Levels is absolutely insane, the furthest I ever got on it was some maze level, I think in world 6 or 7, and that was years ago.

In my opinion, Monster Hunter has the best learning curve in all of video games. You start off pretty slowly with the Great Jaggi, which is easy for experienced players, but can be quite the challenge for new players. Then it slowly ramps up in difficulty with monsters like Rathalos and Tigrex to finally beat your sorry ass to death with Rajang.

The one where you have to keep hopping on the sinking platform to reveal his weakness, and if you beat him but are still on the platform the controls lock and it automatically kills you. +TerravancerYoh That wasn't hard, but it's more a game that requires a lot of grinding to beat, at least up until Paradox. After that, if you get the phoenix ra form, you pretty much have a 12.5% chance on the opening hand of winning the duel instantly (discard phoenix ra to summon battle mode ra) and the odds only increase from there. The only massive difficulty is building a deck that can let you survive until then. At least from my perspective (since I've played Reshef through to the end over five times), it's more a game that requires grinding to keep up rather than a massively difficult and unforgiving game by itself. That doesn't make it difficult, it makes it tedious. The only thing that can be hard is when luck-based card gameplay decides to screw you and your opponent draws the one card in their deck that will destroy your current setup.

I can't deny that I have gained a lot of frustration from playing reshef, it's nowhere near as easy as its predecessor, sacred cards, but unfortunately the standard of the franchise is built such that grinding is the name of the game if you can't currently overcome the challenge in front of you. Reshef of destruction and Forbidden memories were two absolute testaments to this (not to mention all the World Championship Series games). Probably the only game where you might have had to grind a little bit but not absolutely massively to win, was either The Sacred Cards, or Duelist of the Roses.

+Zsaver3 I see what you mean, the Yu-Gi-Oh games tend to have opponents where not only is their deck perfectly suited to them and hard to work against, but they can occasionally have moments where they pro play the shit out of you, or even worse, they draw the perfect hand and destroy any hopes you had of winning on turn one. I remember so many times where that happened and I was like "wow. Screw you too game."

+TerravancerYoh Actually, your anger can be justified. If you get far enough you begin to encounter opponents who have their decks stuffed to the gills with powerful cards. Cards that you can normally have 1 copy of in your deck in that game. Harpie's Feather Duster? Raigeki? Pot of Greed? Change of Heart? Swords of Revealing Light? Expect to see your opponent run 3 copies of them, gleefully shitting on the effort you took to get this far. Oh, yeah, and the starting Life Point skew along with the fact that your own Life Points are conserved unless you run home and save. Gets pretty brutal when the game throws several of those at you in a row. At least your reprieve there is the lousy AI that can be easily tricked.

It wasn't until over a YEAR after release that the first person finally managed to beat it, making it the longest time taken for the first ever clear and therefore scientifically the hardest. P.S. Even though i did not play Ninja Giden black, i did play the Sigma version. And at least there are no birds, but there is a replacement: The ghost fish A.K.A. The "f@$% you" fish!!! At least they are in the last chapters. But they are not the only annoying thing you face! There is also Alma. She is the worst example of how to not make a hard boss! B.S. attacks? check! a 95% chance of dodging when in air and 50% chance when on ground? check! bad checkpoint placement before this boss? Check! A supernatural A.I.? CHECK!! To make things worse, she is the boss of chapter 9! It is a massive difficultity spike! Oh also, she has a final form you have to fight before the final 3 chapters, which should be burned alive then stabbed 6666 times then be forced to complete battletoads, then finally die in the same way as Komani!!! All the things that annoy me in her first form are 9001 times worse! Well, at least they place a checkpoint right before this fight.

I agree with your number one choice. Other hard games made add a new gimmick or two each level but Battletoads switches how you need to play the game with each level, adding not only new obstacles but also new controls and new ways of navigating the levels. Getting good at Battletoads requires you to pretty much master 8 different games. And considering you have very limited lives and even more limited continues you will have very little time to practice a level before you have to complete it. And add to that all of the troll moves that will cost you a life if you don't know about it and a co-op that is only there to hinder the players and you have a game that seems to hate you on a very personal level.

excluding the ones with higher difficulty settings that make them the hardest, here are a few of the hardest i've played. 1. resonance of fate (if this game had a difficulty setting, it would be labeled as "WTF") 2. ninja gaiden 2 (has higher difficulty but even the normal mode can be rough. what made it hard for me was unfair checkpoints and item distribution.) 3. the agarest series (every one was pretty difficult. hard to name just 1) 4. Dragon age 2 (i actually played this one on the hard difficulty. however it was the knock back mechanic that was broken to the point where it didn't matter. if you got cornered, you were going to die.) 5. Metroid prime 2 (no one should have to backtrack the entire game to find small invisible aliens that don't appear on your map) 6. Etrian series (it's a 1st person strategy dungeon game... they can be very punishing for making mistakes and knowing the layout is as important as knowing your battle tactics.) 7. Fishing Master (this is a light hearted fishing game on the wii. for the most part it wasn't too bad but later in-game it was FUCKING RIDICULOUS!!! i enjoyed this game a lot for some reason although i'm not normally into these kinds of games) 8. The world ends with you (a pretty difficult ds game and was probably one of the best on the system. great soundtrack and gameplay. things were manageable for a while but later game new enemies and bosses were very hard.) 9. Knights in the Nightmare (this game is so hard that it was made so you won't lose progress in battles or boss fights when you die. it features permadeath similar to the fire emblem series although it has limited movement. it plays like a bullet hell and a tactics game at the same time. i think the match resets if you are unable to kill the enemy within the time limit. this game would be unbeatable if you lost progress every time you died.) 10. ice age/carnivorous hunt (i was a lot younger when i played this old ass pc game so maybe it seemed harder than it really was. however, the bosses of these games were truly something else. firing a bullet into the eye of a t-rex is very hard and was the only way to kill it. it could smell you a kilometer away and shooting him there while he's chasing you is impossible since his eyes on the side of his face. you also can't outrun him once he comes after you. the boss of ice age was even worse since i was never able to kill that one

Super Mario Bros, the Lost Levels, was exactly what it says on the box. It was content cut from the first game because it didn't fit, or was considered too tricky, that was then cleaned up and repackaged as a sequel in Japan after they reskinned the ACTUAL sequel and started working on on the third entry, realizing they didn't have a number 2 in Japan. Please don't continue perpetuating this myth.

I know it's not actually *that* hard, but Geometry Dash was, at times, my personal *demon.* Some of the tracks the game has invoke a sense of love and nostalgia because it reminds me of the endless cheering for my bro we did when he beat Jumper. The game's music is kick-fucking-ass and when you get in the flow only to die on a cheese spike and get flapped back to the start you don't feel like existing anymore and/or your phone is in imminent danger!

I had enough trouble with the first Ninja Gaiden reboot, which I got into a few years ago, then saw Ninja Gaiden Black. I proceeded to pick it up, doing the first few battles of the game with relative ease. I then proceeded to go through six controllers on that game. Not from rage, from the buttons and sticks coming off due to me playing that so much in an effort to fully beat the game.

Battletoads was a good pick for number 1, honestly i'm glad I Wanna Be The Guy isn't at number 1 because the difficulty of it is a bit overrated, Battletoads and I Wanna Be The Guy share the same bond that they're mostly muscle memory but what makes battletoads harder is that you have lives and limited fuck ups. Experiencing I Wanna Be The Guy on a blind playthrough yes you will die a lot per se but on a second playthrough you will get nearly 2/3's less of the deaths you got on your first playthrough, I'm sure you can say the same about battletoads but I Wanna Be The Guy does have save points and infinite lives so, i guess that's the least i can say.

I'm surprised that Jak II wasn't on this list. It's not as difficult on your second playthrough, but there are a few select levels that still make me rage. It's definitely the most difficult game I have ever played. Seriously, I had to technically cheat to get past that bullshit slums mission by groundpounding the water, destroying the autocannon, and merely hover-boarding across the water and thereby avoiding the Krimson Guards. Donkey Kong Country 2 is also an insanely difficult game. I've noticed that the second entry in a franchise is always the most difficult.

Demon's souls is definitly not as hard as dark souls 1 Especially in 2019. The enemies have becom archaic and slow compared to the other games and it's so easy to get op in the game (magic/dragonbonesmasher) It is however a great game and it's more difficult than dark souls2

What? No SMT game? Oh well, Maybe Nocturne is like a secret Number 11; that seems fair. :P I would say one of the hardest games I've played is Dragon Quest VIII. You know a game is really hard when it is a literal roadblock in making the next episode of the Let's Play that's you're doing on it... *Stares at Emperya's evil birdie soul!* This is why you should practice and do test runs of LP's you want to 100%; you should know what to expect! Unless you want to play them blind, that's okay too. XD I would also say that the first Dark Cloud game is kind of hard; I can't get pass the first dungeon of the game... Then again I could just really suck at understanding the different game mechanics between this game and the sequel. Dark Cloud 2 is better though. :P

I've played Dark Souls 3 and Darksiders 3, and I must say... I absolutely *despise* the formula. It screams "mediocrity" in the terms of game design! There is no room for creativity or experiments. It all comes down to one simple thing: you don't know the moveset of the enemy - you die. Simple as that. And, of course, there's no way to study the said moveset except for battling the enemy and learning it from your many deaths. You said something about satisfation that comes after beating yet another powerful enemy in Dark Souls, but I felt _none of it._ And that's because I realized what an incredibly *cheap* idea lies behind the design of such gameplay. The game doesn't really put your skill to the test, because there is NO skill that is required to pass it. Even the hardest boss of the game would be beaten by even *an ape* after enough times dying to them.

Anyone aware of God Hand? It's incredibly hard but very fair. It's a hidden gem that got a bad rating from IGN simply because the reviewer found it too difficult. If I had to give if a number, I'd say it's about 7 times as hard as Dark Souls on its hardest difficulty. It's also epic and insanely fun.

Conquest has casual mode and radiant dawn was just a translation error. In japan, the difficulties were normal, hard and lunatic. In the usa, it was easy, normal and hard. As nonody wanted to play a easy game, they accidentely chose what was supposed to be hard. Anyway, the hardest fe is thracia 776
