Another Honorable mention would be Omori from, well, Omori. He's the final boss of the game and he uses illusions masterfully, forcing you to watch every single horror a kid that already has a lot of baggage should ever see. Starting from seeing his friends gleefully murder Basil, to a reminder of what he did wrong, Omori tries everything to force Sunny to surrender control, all of it capped with a beautiful finale that showxcases Sunny overcoming his inner-demons and recovering from his PTSD.

Yep. I did a pacifist run and only had to dodge the past bosses. What really impressed me is that the game remembers the methods used to kill the guards, even if you tricked a vulture into eating a dead guard and ate the vulture: 'you ATE me!'

The Sorrow is definitely a good choice for this list. He really makes for a memorable encounter since the fight can be a breeze if you haven't killed anyone other than the bosses. But if you killed a lot of soldiers the fight can take a long time. It makes you consider how you handle the stealth gameplay of Snake Eater quite effectively.

Scarecrow is perfect for number 1. He was so close to winning, but he injected fear toxin into Joker-Batman, and that was enough for Batman to take down Joker by locking him away in his mind, showing Joker his fear of being forgotten But man all those hallucinations and mindscrewy segments throughout the Arkham series is incredible.

personally I think the MAd Hatter from Origins had a better illusionary focus. Truly sending Batman into another world, not just a warped aspect of the world he already lived in, with goons walking through mirrors and glasses, card-house constructs and twisted camera angles. Scarecrow was, in all essense, just a glorified stealth-section that repeats several times without much change.

Even though she doesn't really qualify as a boss. Monica from DDLC does actually screw screw with the player's perceptions. And eventually pulls back the curtain enough for the player to realize that every choice they've made is an illusion. Anyway, even if it's only as a honorable mention, I hope that I will see Monica from Doki Doki Literature Club on this list.

There is another illusion boss in the Arkham Series that is a bit underrated who creates illusions just like Scarecrow. This boss takes Batman down the rabbit hole where madness reigns from wall to wall through the rhyming words, where villains toil and psyches crumble, and that man is the Mad Hatter.

Kromer literally committed genocide against Sinclair's family under the pretext of her so called "justice" and Ahab straight up sacrificed almost each and every one of her surviving crewmates all to kill the Pallid Whale, and attempts to gaslight Ishmael into thinking it was all her fault when in reality the fault was definitely Ahab's. In terms of generally being a cool antagonist though, Erlking Heathcliff. Badass outfit, badass fight, kinda tragic backstory, and even badass reveal, what's not to love?

When it comes to the last one of the fear segments from the scarecrow. I actually have a very interesting personal experience with the particular moment. At the time I had just gotten my second Xbox 360 after my previous one, finally succumbed to the red ring of death. So I already had a worry that something that I put a decent amount of money on, broke. So when the screen glitched, my guts clinched. And I quickly hit the power button to turn off the console. I left it alone for an hour hoping that that would fix whatever the problem was, and when I hit the power button again, it didn’t take me to the start screen or anything like that. Put me back in the game that I was legitimately worried had its memory erased because it looked like the start of the game was starting back up. This game legitimately the hell out of me for a little bit there, it went to show that it was the Batmobile and Batman, who was knocked out and handcuffed that I realized that somehow this massive 4th wall break was part of the game. So you can understand my absolute relief when crock got a hold of him and he didn’t see him throughout the rest of the game. He managed to actually induce fear in me when I found out that he was coming back in the third game.

Think of bosses like the majority from Kirby Mass Attack, Galactus from Lego Marvel Superheroes, or the Demiurge from Persona 5 Strikers. All those bosses involve a team taking out one powerful foe.

In my school vr game, there's only 1 boss, which is the Goalilith boss fight (a boss fight against Goalius who is possessed by Lilith Morningstar and its a pain in the ass which to defeat you must play as Lucifer and Charlie Morningstar to dodge the attacks of Goalius but the second phase is where you need therapy which Lilith creates illusions of enemies Goalius dealt with but in the Fuck me difficulty bosses like the Raiden Shogun full power and the Tri Titan Ahab mode are there but the cutseen at the end where the Morningstar family is finally restored is just wholesome as hell and they are the penultimate boss of chapter 450 Family Friends)

It’s been a while since I played this mission in Cyberpunk 2077, but there was a mission to apprehend a certain cyberpsycho and once you enter the area…first off, it was like some evil ritual was taking place and the psycho kept seemingly disappearing and reappearing. I think the psycho was tapping into your own cyberware to mess with your perception, so maybe this would count as an illusion boss. I’m surprised how scared it made me.

Honorable Mention: Infinite (Sonic Forces) Almost like Scarecrow, he uses both fear and the power of illusion from the phantom ruby to take down The Resistance. His fatal flaw? …he underestimated the Avatar’s courage that was developed and decided to spare the Avatar from his rampage, mainly just for sadistic lulz, which of course would be one of the big reasons of Infinite’s downfall. (Even Eggman call him out of sparing victims like Sonic for that!)

​​@@CrazeeAdam I'm pretty upset that THIS ABOMINATION is basically an hallucination via some Mold-infested flower pollen when Ethan enters Lady Beneviento's mansion, according to fanon wiki. I say this because HOW does get eaten alive whole translates to some form of seizure or heart attack!? One of ut's simple words is "Yummy" for crying out loud! Even when that is the case, what causes the doors to burst open in reality?? Is it one of Beneviento's dolls? Or is it that the hallucination somehow has physical presence? Doors open when it enters a room, it's stomach has a large flap of loose flesh that acts as an limp tail, leaving a trail of blood in it's wake, and concept art says it technically is an female organism, most likely based on Rosemary Winters as an baby.

I think Corvus from Black Ops III deserves at least an honorable mention. The final battle is a like the 10, but more challenging as the game throws everything and the kitchen sink at you so it isn't easy. It is also divided into three stages. Also the music (A World Upside Down) is one of the best pieces every composed for a video game.

One honorable mention I'd put up is Zonda in Azure Striker Gunvolt 2, specifically the first fight against the "False" Zonda. The fight doesn't scream illusion, it's mostly themed after mirrors, but the fight *itself* is an illusion meant to distract and keep you busy while the real Zonda enacts the last part of her plan to become... whatever the hell that final boss was meant to be. Plus, it's just plain wacky, with projectiles constantly covering the screen and copies upon copies of Zonda coming in to maul you at any given moment.

The Magic Man from Condemned 2: Bloodshot was pretty fun. While perhaps not as trippy as other illusion bosses, the entire level feels very much like some kind of messed up dream. You're in an abandoned theater, assailed by magician assistants who sometimes seemingly spring to life from the knife boards they're bound to, and the Magic Man himself likes to appear and vanish before and during his boss battle. In fact, after falling onto a bed of spikes and being impaled on it, he vanishes after speaking with Ethan Thomas (also, why the heck are so many horror game protagonists named Ethan?). I would like to give a shout out to Dr. Albert from Dead Rising 3. Nick was first given a task to destroy Hemlok’s supply drops around the city until you get a surprise attack from the mad Doctor himself. Like Scarecrow from the Batman franchise he injects you with a with something that numbs the pain you feel, but also makes you think that some of the survivors Albert kidnapped is Albert himself. You need to find the real Albert by using the boxes of dissected organs to make the real Albert angry and open to your attack. Only one small problem, Albert confiscated your equipment! If you do get low on health you can still look around for healing items. Inject him with enough of his own medicine and he soon falls into his own hallucinations and unknowingly kills himself thinking he is being eaten by zombies. Even after the fight, you still get to hear the screams of some of Albert’s victims begging to be freed of their torment. Giving you insight that the mad doctor has been stealing and selling organs to the black market for a very long time. A fantastic surprise fight in a boring and tedious story quest.

Another honorable mention: Serpentine from Azure Striker Gunvolt 3. Her whole bread and butter is using illusions of past bosses to attack you with her mist septima. Then there’s Zonda from Gunvolt 2. Their mirror septima lets them create deadly illusions including flipping the screen around and a full range of other attacks. Story wise Zonda really pulled the wool over a lot of eyes with her illusions to say the least.

I'm pretty certain that the "red light, blue light" might be based on the fact that in Japan, they used blue lights instead of green light in some places. It probably comes from the fact that blue and green both share the same word (aoi, I think. Probably wrong with the word)

I did enjoy the Scarecrow boss fights but I feel like they could have been more effective in Arkham Knight, tied into the Jason Todd flashbacks. Forcing Batman to not only flashback to his parents death but forcing him to relive that feeling of never being able to get to his son in time, always just slightly to late to save the people that he cares about. It would also explain why he gets the flashbacks to Jason's torture slightly better.

Another good illusion boss is the doppleganger from Double Dragon 2: The Revenge. The fight is eerie and so is the music. At some points, the boss will disappear. You won’t know where he is until he possesses you and beats the crap out of you from within.

@joshscorcher 15:07 funny thing about that josh I watched an interesting video that brakes down Sephiroth's whole mindset across all FF7 media and its horrifying when you realize the man has more in common with Kefka then you would first think. Sephiroth pre insanity always believed he was special and had a purpose and didn't realy care for his fellow man he saw himself above them but behaved himself and acted as he was expected to act and had at least two semi-equal friends to keep some lock on his sanity once he lost said friends and learned the truth he realized he could be himself and embrace his glorious purpose as a destroyer and revel in the violence and destruction he enjoys so much he could finally crush these pathetic bugs and be the superior being he always believed himself to be. Once he fell in the lifestream and learned his true origins he didn't care as he had access to even more knowledge and he would be this world's god or destroy it even making Jenova his so called "mother" submit to his will and manipulate his clones for this new goal for he is Sephiroth the ultimate life form this is his destiny and then he loses to Cloud and becomes enraged at losing to an ordinary guy not once but twice. This rage gets to the point he rips out all his memories, humanity and anything else that isn't focused on becoming a god and making Cloud suffer and that's were the Sephiroth remnants in Advent children came from man was so angry at Cloud he threw away every part of his soul that wasn't focused on that grudge and turned them into puppets to comeback to life.
