Link is definitely who I think of first when it comes to versatility. He’s always getting some new gadgets every game and he uses them like an expert. Link is always ready for any situation but you have to be when you’re repeatedly called to save the world

Samus is another example, I'd say. Not every day you see a spacewoman attack pirates with the very action of shock-backflipping. Not to mention her other unique weaponry like the grapple gun, morph bombs, power bombs, speed booster, etc.

I also think Ryu Hayabusa from the ninja gaiden games is also a pretty versatile character due to his vast articles of weapons he got during his adventures and the amount of magic or ninpo he uses during his adventures.

My honorable mention goes to the Ouroboros Six from Xenoblade Chronicles 3, because not only can a particular pair of Kevesi and Agnian interlink to become an Ouroboros, they're also the only heroes in the game that can change classes, using different Blades, mastering Skills and Arts to use with other classes, and even getting their own Blue Mage class with Soulhacker, able to learn Skills and Arts to use with said class after defeating various Unique Monsters.

Let's also not forget that while Zero primarily uses the Z-Saber and a Buster in the Zero series, those two weapons have plenty of different techniques and upgrades to fight all sorts of enemies in all sorts of situations from flamey uppercuts to icy downward stabs to projectile beam blade to various screen-nuking Giga Attacks. He's also wielded other weapons thanks to X7 and X8, can fight barehanded and even do Street Fighter moves, and his Zero series incarnation had access to a Shield Boomerang, a grabbing arm, and variations on the Triple Rod spear (including a whip and twin Tonfas).

For versatility in subconscious combat, Persona's Wild Cards are worth mentioning. All manner of Personas (the equivalent of magic) are available to them, fuseable, and cover all manner of niches. Persona 5's Joker in particular stands out given unlike his predecessors as he has both a gun and a knife contrary to the single-weapon focus of the others.

All I have to say is (Update actually I can think of two versatile fighters of my own. Smeargle because Sketch is the Number 10 entry's gimmick on steroids. To the point where I feel like the removal of certain moves in Gen 8 were because they didn't want to limit what moves Sketch can copy. And Xane from Fire Emblem 1 & 3 as well as their remakes. Who can copy every aspect of an adjacent ally for 5 turns) HOORAY! You're finally doing Splatterhouse.

When you started with number 10 being Live A Live I thought about the concert that had happened and while performing the boss theme "Megalomania" they threw in a bit of a track that took insperation from the track Megalovania from Undertale and the best part was Toby Fox himself was in the audience meaning he got to experience it live.

I am so happy Frank West is on here. Dead Rising is one of my favorite games all because of how versatile you can be with the many, many, MANY weapons at your disposal. And that doesn't even bring up combo weapons, either. It's insane!

The main character of Dragon Quest 6 is the most versatile protagonist in the series, though part of it is due to the retool of the vocations only being balanced by the glacial speed of mastering vocations (instead of using job EXP like its former competitor, it counts the number of battles that pose a challenge to your character level). While vocations have their own modifiers that alter a character's stats and unique abilities, you keep any magic and abilities that you obtain via job level ups. Just to give an example of how broken this can be, your strongest physical attackers can learn Omniheal, a move that always fully heals any party members that have more than 0HP. There's also the big three vocations: Hero, Dragon and Liquid Metal Slime. Hero gives you access to passive healing that recovers more HP as the job level increases and also grants you the power to use Zap elemental magic, summon lightning storms at will and also attack your enemies with the power of the Pearly Gates. Dragon gives you a huge attack boost and finally lets you wield the frightfully C-c-c-cold breath that bosses use to torment you for the low price of 0MP. Liquid Metal Slime might make you think it's a joke vocation because it doesn't give you the impenetrable defense and magic immunity of their namesakes, but that comes once you reach the final job level and you'll also obtain Magic Burst and Big Bang! But all of this can be done by any member of the party, so why do I single out the MC? Because unlike everyone else, who has to master every advanced and by extension starter vocation, he unlocks the Hero vocation after mastering a single advanced vocation. Also, this is all taking into account that the Monster Tamer vocation got nerfed. In the DS version of the game, you can only recruit certain monsters you find by exploring and the Monster Tamer is about as strong as one can expect from a starter vocation. On the SNES, Monster Tamers could do what their title implied and recruit monsters. They also had blue mage powers and could learn moves earlier than they would by exploiting them. It's no surprise that 9 ended up changing the vocation system.

For me it would have to be Skul from Skul: The Hero Slayer. This small skeleton can replace his skull with different skulls that can give him the abilities that resemble the user. And hey the Mythology DLC adds in mythology heroes and legends to be used in this roguelike and this feels like it makes them a versatile fighter

Considering how many legacy video game characters there are, how long they've been around and the vast amount of enemies they've fought/abilities and weapons they've acquired/places they visited there are many worthy qualifiers for a list like this. My pick would be the main character of my favorite video game series, Samus Aran. Normally she attacks with beams, missiles and bombs but she's had many different types and can use them for more than just fighting. The Wave Beam can go through walls, floors, transparent materials like glass and in the Prime series is electricity based and can stun enemies as well as power up machines that used to be offline (a particular enemy in Metroid Dread uses the Wave Beam to stun foes with an electric shock like the Wave Beam has been used in the Prime games, but Samus hasn't used the Wave Beam this way in the 2D games although she probably could if she wanted). Ice Missiles can freeze enemies to make them easier to take out or to be used as platforms. Power Bombs are normally used as a screen nuke like Kirby's Crash Ability or Mega Man X's Giga Crush but can also be used in conjunction with the Spider Ball to launch Samus in one direct in a technique called the Spider Spark. This is useful for exploration as well as interrupting boss attacks like from the Queen Metroid in Samus Returns. Then there's other abilities like the Speed Booster, allowing Samus to run at supersonic speed, damage enemies, break certain blocks as well as allowing for an advanced technique, the Shinepsark. Samus can crouch while Speed Boosting to store the charge, then launch herself in one direct until colliding with a wall she can't break through, or she can spark into a slope to start using Speed Booster again. With Metroid Dread Samus can now Speed Boost after jumping, sliding and wall jumping which makes the Speed Boost more versatile than ever before (as well as allowing the most intricate Shinespark puzzles the series as ever seen). This is scratching the surface of all the stuff Samus has acquired and without going into her various suits or other special weapons like Missile Combos. There's also the variety of locations she's visited like the steampunk observatory on Elysia, the sentient planet Phaaze and the many enemies she's fought both big and small like Dark Samus, Ridley, X Parasites the titular Metroids and so much more. I'm surprised Mario isn't on this list. Not just for the VAST amount of power ups he's acquired, different places he's been, he can even be in every genre of game out there! RPGs, racing games, Tetris in the form of DR. Mario, even an XCOM like game with the Mario + Rabbids games. Mario isn't called Mr. Video Game for nothing since he's capable of so much.

Funny how Tododile never evolved while he first got Krookodile after it had evolved for the first time after being a recurring antagonistic mon in early Unova episodes as a Sandile.

This was such a cool idea for a video and a really great list. I love versatile combatants, in games especially. A multitude of Castlevania protagonists (Nathan Graves from Circle of the Moon in particular comes to mind. though that is largely due to my personal appreciation for that game), Link, , and Megaman (in their various incarnations) immediately come to mind in this regard but there's a plethora of others that could easily be added to the list. One lesser known protagonist who would end up on my own list would have to be The Kid from Bastion. Throughout that game you get a decent variety of different weaponry at your disposal like a hammer, a repeater crossbow, grenades, a machete, a carbine rifle, and so on. I think Dante from Devil May Cry most certainly fits the bill quite well too. Because of his inhuman heritage (at least I think that's the cause of it, that's what the games seem to imply anyway) he has unreal skill with any all weapons he gets his hands on, be they melee, or long distance oriented. I didn't think to include Pokemon for a list like this until you brought up Mew, but after you did I started thinking back to all the "blank slate" Pokemon as I came to call them in more recently years. Snorlax being one example. Ya know, Pokemon who can learn a wide variety of moves that you'd assume they have no business having access to. Like Snorlax being capable of learning Surf. How in the fuckhell would a feline of those physical proportions be capable of swimming so effectively? I just love the characters that give off the Fighter class from DnD vibe, being a jack of all trades so to speak, in terms of raw combat. Or at least as far as I know. I've never played Dungeons and Dragons and admittedly know next to nothing about it so I'm not even sure if those aspects about the Fighter class apply presently.

@@olivierdubreuil-gagnon2201 There's a good reason why Mew was chosen for the list proper and Smeargle was left off: Smeargle MAY have access to more moves overall, but it's low stats mean that unless you want to breed a certain move onto a specific Pokemon, what you can do with it in battle is actually pretty limited, since it really can only play a more passive support role with how abysmal it's stats are. Mew, on the other hand, has actually good stats across the board, letting it do more than just play team support as it can (in the right tier, anyways) pull off offensive and defensive sets alike just as effectively. Being versatile is more than just being able to use a wide variety of skills and so on, as being able to actually take advantage of them effectively is equally as important, otherwise you'll still wind up pigeonholed into a specific role in spite of this if something (or someone) else is able to do the job better, and Smeargle's pitiful stats mean that this is the case more often than not, and even Mew has fallen prey to this in the past as well

I feel like Mario is sadly helped by Nintendo running a certain papery side series into the ground (Stickers? REALLY!) And keep in mind. I personally consider Origami King a step in the right direction (Yeah still no EXP. BUT: Bowser wasn't the main villain for a third time in a row, The bosses didn't require something specific to beat. And I like how beating the Vellumentals let Olivia do things on panels both in & outside of battle)

Since I'm currently playing SMT3: Nocturne HD Remaster for my Switch Lite I'd like to add the game's resident anti-hero/anti-villain human/demon hybrid protagonist the Demi-Fiend basically along with being able to do the typical JRPG thing and allot his Strength, Vitality, Magic, Agility, and Luck Points however you see fit, where the Demi-Fiend's ability to be a versatile fighter shines is in the Magatamas he consumes now the Magatamas plot-wise are these demonic worms that turn humans into human/demon hybrids call Demi-Fiends when eaten, gameplay wise the Magatamas when ingested will not only alter the Demi-Fiend's stats but also grant the Demi-Fiend access to powerful attacks and spells and you can swap in and out the various Magatamas you find in the overworld and buy at the various shops at any time and the cherry on top of this demon worm Sundae is whenever you learn a new skill you get to keep that skill even if you swap the Magatama that gave you said skill out for another one. In my playthrough the skills I have for my take on the Demi-Fiend are a powerful physical attack in the form of Lunge, Elemental damage via Ice Breath and Fire Breath, the ability to ascertain a foe's weaknesses and strengths with Analyze, and debuffs in the form of Dekunda, and Tsakunda.

I know FFV is more classic and beloved, but in all honnestly if I had to pick versatility in the FF franchise, I think of Lightning, I know FFXIII is hated but can't really deny how versatile Lightning is in combat, right from the first game she could use magic, heal, fight at close and long range, buff, debuff all by switching role on the fly, same deal in her XIII-2 DLC, but she reach her peaks in Lightning Returns when you can fully customize her to be just about anything you want a powerfull mage, a speedy fighter, a martial artist...etc... with also way to negate damage coming her way and the ability to stop time for a short period of time. Also when it comes to RPG, main protagonist of Persona games from 3 to 5 are also worth mentionning as they can pretty much do anything as long as they have the persona for it.
