Top Ten Video Game Shield Wielders

So since I’m seeing a lot of comments asking for him, no, Goofy was not deemed eligible for the list, though I understand the confusion. We have a policy to use “Only Characters from Video Games” on these kinds of countdowns, meaning they need to come from a video game. Now with Goofy, some make the rather compelling argument that the Kingdom Hearts version of Goofy is a different version of the character from the classic Disney cartoons. That’s a decent point, and we did consider this. Some video game characters are based on pre-existing concepts after all. For instance, Cao Ren from Dynasty Warriors, who we used on this same list, is based on the historical and literary figure of the same name. In Cao Ren’s case, we felt Koei’s version of the character has enough new features to be considered transformative. This Cao Ren is a video game character, in our eyes. But for Goofy, we’re feel like there isn’t enough to separate his Kingdom Hearts appearance from his past cartoon existence. He looks the same, talks the same, has the same personality and characteristics. It’s mainly just his job as a Knight and his outfit that’s unique to his Kingdom Hearts appearance, but to us it feels like this is the same character dropped into Kingdom Hearts, in the same way that Captain America in Marvel vs. Capcom is still the same character from the comics. It’s not different enough to be a new character to us. This isn’t to say KH Goofy isn’t a talented Shield Wielders in his own right. So I apologize to any KH fans who were disappointed. I do understand where you’re coming from.

I'd like to follow this up by mentioning a couple of other characters many people have mentioned. First of all, Rygar was considered. However, he just didn't quite cut it as his shield mastery is more tell than show. Then there's Mash from Fate Grand Order. I don't doubt that Mash is a fantastic shield wielder and perhaps very worthy of this list. However, I have never played Fate Grand Order and, unfortunately, don't really have any interest in doing so. Honestly, I'm shocked at the lack of questions about Amaterasu from Okami. She didn't quite make it, but she had a much closer chance.

Yeah it's her starting weapon, but her call to fame is more the brush techniques than the tool that can be swapped out for a sword (cause we can't talk about shields without them apparently) or my personal favorite the rosary beads. All the reflector has iirc are your typical bashes and a block (which apparently ruins combos) being divided whether it was equipped as a main or sub. I know you joked about it already, but I would expect Link to make it over Ammy for having more varied uses. I would love to see you talk about this incarnation of the sun goddess, I just don't think shield users is the place.

Her defense is the whole camelot and in lostbelt, her shield can turn into a freaking RAILGUN I hope she could at least an honorable mention in the future

Part of me would laugh if Kanji got on the list. Not necessarily because he uses a chair in most of his appearances, though all his other weapons are shields and a desk, but more because he uses it SO wrong. He doesn't even defend himself with it, he just puts his arms in front of his face while the shield just sits there.

Okay, for me personally, I think my favorite Shield wielder comes from a mobile game that I found really good (Keep in mind: I found it good, you might not, that's okay) and that character is Mash Kyrielight, or Mashu for those who live in Japan. Now for context, Fate/Grand Order is a game that takes place in 2017, where an organization named Chaldea is trying to prevent Humanity's incineration. Now Mash herself is something known as a Demi-Servant, meaning she is half Servant, half human, which means she has the abilities of the Heroic Spirit she was bound to. In other words, she's given a large shield as her weapon (which she can do a Shield Charge like Cap in MvC, a Shield Dive, and cause miniature Shockwave from the shield), and she has 5 skills: 2 passive and 3 Active. Her 2 passive skills are Magic Resistance A (which increases Debuff Resistance by 20%), and Riding C (Quick attack effectiveness by 6%), and are automatically activated at the start of a battle. Her 3 active skills are Transient Wall of Snowflakes (allowing her to amplify people's defenses), which then upgrades to Honorable Wall of Snowflakes (which does the same thing but also cuts the damage you take by 2000), Obscurant Wall of Chalk (which grants temporary Invulnerability to certain attacks to one person of your choosing), and Shield of Rousing Resolution (which applies target focus to herself as well as being able to fuel her Noble Phantasm Gauge faster. Noble Phantasms, or NPs are a character's signature weapon, artifact or Reality Marble). Now for Mash's Noble Phantasm, it first starts off as Lord Chaldeas, which it increases your defense and cuts the damage you take in by 1000 points... but when you reach the final battle in Camelot, she's able to summon a Phantasmal fortress by the name of Lord Camelot, which does not waver if the user's heart doesn't, and gives you the benefits of Lord Chaldeas, but stronger, and gives everyone of her allies aside from herself a 30% attack boost. Though the reason I love Mash is because of how insurmountable her will is. Even when facing against an attack that could destroy all of Humanity, she still uses her Noble Phantasm to protect Humanity, knowing that each time she went into a singularity created by a Grail, she was slowly killing herself. She chose to protect the one she cares about, and her sacrifice is rewarded in the end with her being brought back at the end to enjoy the world they worked to fight for. She, in my opinion, is truly the best written Shielder in all of gaming not only for her kindness, or her abilities in battle, but her determination and will to save others.

14:44 one of my fav skyrim characters i mare was a heavy armour and shield mage who used a lot of short-mid range magic. Once you get respite to regen stamina with healing spells you can balance spells and shield bashes indefinitely.

Really I'd like to see braum at number 1 he just is everything a shield user should be, a rallying hero who fights well, but is all about protecting people. Even to his enemies he shows compassion, "Today we fight each other, but tomorrow we may fight together." He protects and cares for people on all levels. This doesn't mean he's not a fighter though, "float like iceberg, sting like thrown iceberg." He will fight to protect people and its all through his shield that he fights.

Scorpion talked about the hero moment, but honestly even if I get my champ killed doing those jumps I love being able to jump in and protect my team mates. I wish we could have had a more in depth entry on General Tsao, since he has a pretty uniquie shield that he uses for some unique feats. I guess he had a few points docked since he is only fought once and makes heavy use of magic, but even then he uses the shield to cast some of his spells. But I also miss him because he perfectly embodies his weapon. It is not just a plain shield. It contains a hidden array of blades that can portrude and spin around at a moments notice to shred his foe. And that is quite fitting for Tsao in the episode he apppears in. He starts on the defense, waiting and observing until he dicides to go on the offence against the gang by breaking into their hideout and ruining their plans. But it is totally understandable that he was left out since he never really bothers to dirty his own hands, prefering to leave the fighting to his minions.

Mash Kyrielight from Fate/Grand Order. She is in a class strictly for shield users (the Shielder Class), she is fused with the spirit of Sir Galahad (one of the Knight of the Roundtable), and while she may not be the strongest (she is more like a Jack of all trades character) her kits are purely defensive and if used properly she is essentially the ultimate shield and you can survive most battles with her. Her ultimate ability/Noble Phantasm is called Lord Camelot and it allows her to summon the very same walls that were used to protect Camelot of Arthurian Legend which gives a LOT of defensive support to all party members. Another thing, her shield (which is called Around Round Shield) is also made from the same material used to make the Round Table.

interesting story actually. In a D&D campaign I played I sported a tower shield with spikes on the front. This was my first jump into the paladin class where I basically played the Braum of my group. The shield even got upgraded ny my patron which was literally called, because my DM was a huge league fan, "The shield of Braum" which refined the spikes into a pair of massive, sharp ram horns. I did wield another weapon known as "The leviathan axe" in other words think Kratos axe from god of war. Oddly in the Campaign my character, a silver dragonborn named Donnar, earn the name of "The frozen guardian" due to his accidental association with ice and ice based weapons. Kinda thought it was cool.

I really appreciate that there is a good amount of shield users in video games. I was very curious how this list was gonna go because I wasn’t too familiar with a lot of shield wielders. Whenever shield wielders comes up my first thought immediately goes Naofumi Iwatani from Rising of the Shield Hero which is not a video game, the way how he uses the shield might be on the nose but I think he perfectly shows how powerful the ultimate defense could be. I’m kind of guessing some of your inspiration of this list might have came from the anime. Continue with the awesome work Oscar!!! You and your team do great with your countdowns and other videos. Really love watching them and they make me appreciate video games so much, because there is a lot you can learn from them. The shield user I remember is City of Heroes "Blue Steel". He was sort of a memetic badass for that game, given that shields weren't actually available as powers until much later in development. But he also showed up as a deus ex machina a few times. Felt really bad the first time I actually fought him, because I was a hero ... technically in the wrong. Needed to recruit a villain from the local superprison to stand a chance against the upcoming boss fight, and Blue Steel, hero of the PPD, was the one blocking the exit.

All right, time for a more practical comment. Also Shame you didn't do weapons Month 5 in September. A certain shield maiden from the recent Tales of Arise could have made the list. Just imagine this: Shield Sheldon: So, what's your story? Kisara: Didn't make Shield Weilders. Was 4 months too early. You? Shield Sheldon: Too many shells, not enough shields. 10. Cassandra Alexandra, fighter and aunt of Patrokolos and Pyrrah. I can see this. 9. A Mass Effect character who specializes in Shields. neat concept. 8. Zamazenta, the shield wolf. Pretty snazzy. Also, in a recent event in Masters EX, Zamazenta went to our good buddy Hop, and serves as a support. I have yet to get this guy but when I do, defense will be the name of my game. Also Zamazenta shares the same typing with Lucario and Cobalion when it has the Rusty Shield equipped. 7. Oh boy, can't have a shield wielders list without Shulk's best buddy Reyn, the emotional pillar of the group, despite having dumb moments. 6. Another shield staple Shield Knight. Makes you wonder if she'll have a Mii costume in Smash. 5. Here's an unexpected surprise. Quarter Guy would be crying Tears of Joy since after Sen, Samurai Showdown would never rise from it's ashes. Also, she's a cutie. And if you seen Jackie Chan Adventures, you'd remember those symbols on her shield: Fire, Sky, Thunder, Mountain, Earth, Moon, Wind and Water. 4. It was a LONG time since a League of Legends Champion got on this list. Braum is a mountain of a man, with a heart to match, as he serves as a shield for the downtroden. Ashe, LEARN ABOUT COMPASSION FROM THIS GUY. Well, I'm just salty Shield Sheldon from Megaman X6 didn't make this list as he, unlike his shield wielding ancestors: Wood Man, Skull Man, Star Man, Plant Man, Junk Man, Jewel Man, Pump Man and Acid Man, or even his fellow Maverick veteran Armored Armadillo, or even Red Alert Veteran Soldier Stone Kong, who attacks with his shield too, could block projectiles and Sheldon manages to bounce back anything that isn't a blunt instrument like say... an anchor, but too much shells not enough shields. And then we have Kisara from Tales of Arise who was four months early to the party but man does she pack a punch with that huge shield of hers. Anyways, next time we suit up.

I'd like to submit an honorary mention... Galand from "Effie". The guy gets turned into an old man by a witch that he snubbed and, to help restore his youth, the gods of his world give him, not a sword or a spear, but a magical shield called Runestone. He gets the standard abilities of battering enemies (and treasure chests to open them), a shield throw, a Charging Star and a shockwave attack. But he also gets the ability to surf around on it like a hoverboard from "Back to the Future", it lets him double-jump and purify dark magic that he encounters on the Red Plains, and he can project force fields to bolster his defenses. Towards the end of the game, he actually realizes why he was given the shield--to give someone the chance to correct their mistakes, much like he had been given. He doesn't do much special with the shield, but I think his handiness with it and the message he was given with it are worth noting. Also, he sounds familiar. I don't know why, though...

Yes and no. I mean Hephaestus is certainly capable of bestowing Fire enchantments, I’m sure, but he’s also the guy who forged Zeus’ lightning bolts in many versions of mythology, so there’s a precedent to him making lightning weapons.

Playing through Bravely Default for the first time I turned Ringabell into a duel wielding shield knight. He gets a move that uses your defense stat as the offense stat and that move was a freaking nuke. I subclassed him with idol to cast support moves including a taunt that made enemies focus him.

I should have posted this when I first watched your video, but I would love to see a Rouge-Like Dungeon Crawler (possibly Turn Based), based on the Rising of the Shield Hero anime (except I would give Naofumi the ability to shield bash, the God that didn't give him at least that is a real dick). You would get a mass array of different weapons and different forms and styles since the weapons could morph, why no-one hasn't done this yet I haven't the foggiest. Also it's a good manga/anime to check out, ignore most of the 'controversies' mainstream media has said about it, they're talking out their asses.

Gotta give an honorable mention to two characters; Tora and Mash Kyrielight. Tora is a little harder to justify, but his starting weapon is the shield and serves a similar role to the previous Xenoblade tank. But the character I wanna give mention to more is Mash; if she weren’t with the Chaldean Master, we’d all be doomed. With the spirit origin and Noble Phantasm of Galahad, she can easily block a lot of damage. Her first skill can borderline negate any damage if the other unit is resistant, her second guarantees invincibility to one unit for a turn (I.E. saves your ass throughout part 1 of Fate/Grand Order’s story), and combos so much with her third skill where she applies taunt to herself. That last part is vital; if the enemy has a single target NP, you’re given a free turn of living. Also, while not her own, her NP “Lord Camelot” applies defense up, damage cut, AND an attack up for other units. Oh, and the cherry on top? That NP was enough to block an attack from a Beast, Goetia. And even after coming back to life (don’t question it, the status quo is god and god is a squirrel demon), still provides as much support as possible. Even without Galahad in her corner, she was still able to block attacks and use the same strategy of a free turn, just with the downside of using HP.

What a pity, though I also technically forgot about him until after the fact, but it would've been nice to have Goofy swoop in after you spoke about Vexen. The de-facto actually clever person of the trio in Kingdom Hearts, Goofy is literally using only a shield to fight. He would've been perfect for this list. And he needs more recognition.

Really wished Tecmo's Rygar from the game Rygar was on this list. He uses a shield on a chain called a discarmor. The game is based on greek mythology and was pretty much God of War before GoW was released. One of his shields controls ice, one has lightning and wind and one has hellfire. One move he has is detaching the shield and walking around and then the shield will follow the exact path and cut down anything in its path. Other than that, great list as always.
