I am replacing my upper chain guide today which I assume is gone and in pieces at the bottom of the oil pan. The upper chain skipped a tooth and while planning to go in and fix that I had a coolant system failure that I had to deal with first. I really need to disconnect the transmission and do the upper and lower chains and tensioners all in one go but I need to get my spare car running and road legal first. Just got the intake manifold off and taking a break watching your vid for tips and or advice. Cheers, Happy New Year!

Rhkips had his hands full today. After I thought maybe Badger should put a head gasket on it but I didn't dare even mention it. Looks great so far. On to the gearbox. Top notch buddy.

+STEVE ROB it was a consideration, the mk4 gasket increases the compression ratio for a bit more power. Would have meant more parts and more cost so I've flagged it for the time being. Cheers!

Just a tip, before re-fitting the covers, its a good idea to have someone apply manual pressure onto the chain guide where the upper tensioner would sit and manually run the engine through 3x revolutions using a breaker bar on the crank pulley. Once done this, re-check the timing marks which should be lined back up perfectly. Whilst it's relatively certain that all will fine without this step, this is just one more level of error checking before you electronically crank the engine.

9:22 and that’s why you install the crank seal ring after you installed the cover.

no that is bullshit. It is much easier to put the seal in the cover when you have it on your desk. But you install the whole stuff with a special lubricated plastic cap over the crankshaft. It just slides in place and you dont have to fiddle arround with a screwdriwer as he did.

What's the best way to seal up the timing chain covers against the block? Do they sell a gasket or do you have to to use RTV out of a tube?

Very good video, I just did the same procedure assisted by your video, Im not specialist but when I finally rotated the engine manually as you did, I felt it a little hard when the camshaft push over cylinder 1, and is when the chain opressor make his works (I suposse) forcing not jump the chain, my question is: ¿is this completely normal? thank you very much.

You can but you still need to take the gearbox off

It will be a bit tight and you'll have to support the engine but it should be possible.

Did I hear that correct? You only have one dowel pin for the upper timing cover? Double-check your footage; I THINK I can see the other dowel pin in the timing cover itself (it goes in the bolt hole opposite the block from the one currently in there). If it's not in there, check your floor, and think about pulling your oil pan and possibly oil pump to verify that it didn't drop down into the engine. :[ Everything else looks good so far! I forget, did you replace the O-Ring in the upper timing cover?

It was there, sorry audio turned out horrible in that video. I mentioned it at some point. I did not replace it. I'm going to wing it, the old one was still supple. I'm sure I'll pay the price for it!

If the old one still had some squidge to it, then you'll be fine. I ran mine with a rock-hard seal in it for a couple years and never had any signs of a leak there. I replaced it when I did the head gasket a few weeks back, and ended up using a bit of an oversized O-Ring, as no one had the factory size on hand and I didn't have time to wait for one to get shipped. :)

Until now I can't find any teusted ingo about timing on thos gears on the camshaft, in this motor you are working has the right side kind a hydraulic gear and lef is normal gear , BUT THE MINE BITH SIDE ARE HYDRAULIC... can't finish to make run smoth always with 4 misfairing codes... on the 2 dealer I ask for info NO ONE WANT YO GIVE ANY, THEY SAID ALSO IF THEY HAS SOME TOUAREG THEY ONLY CHANGE PARTS UNTIL RUN FINE AND OBVIOUSLY , CUSTOMER PAY ALL....
