I'm doing well used original owner '89 3.2 now. I found the body generally to be pretty solid with few issues. Dropping the engine, the exposed bits in the rear of the axle are very susceptible to corrosion and simple operations like removing the exhaust will take many, many hours of cutting, grinding, torching, and chiseling. Pieces in the air cooled engine that are sealed on other engine are exposed to the elements like the engine cylinder studs, barrel nuts, and the rocker shaft bolts. Just something that will increase the time thus the labor costs on the car when it comes time to get things sorted out. The divilar cylinder studs used are very susceptible to breakage on the models so equipped with mine having 3 broken upon inspection. Exhaust studs will generally be rust welded to both the head and nut and will be a chore to remove unbroken. Machine shops will be your friend in the rebuild process, and when rebuilt using modern replacement parts most of the original weaknesses can be eliminated. I would go as far as to say a rebuilt engine with the improvements would be preferred for me (as a driver/enthusiast) to a low mileage original.

I had one of these back in the days when they had 6 carbs, and considered then to be a true "exotic". Bring a bag full of money. Expect it to be down a considerable amount of time. It has a lot of rust whether you see it or not. But if you can, join the PCA first, then start looking for a car.

Check the filler cap, to see if theres any white in the oil which would indicate the head gaskets gone...... It's air cooled mate. Check your BS

Just watching Quest and heard the tip with the Filler cap ! Sounds like the owner is a Real Petrol Head !!!

To be fair if there is white under the oil filler cap there would be a pretty big problem. Seems like the Chevy LS swap didn't work out too well!

Look for the water in the oil? That’ll be a million quid mate and your blinker fluid is out too... What a muppet. You’ve done so much to it but don’t know it’s air cooled???

Porsche parts can be reasonably priced if they are generic, aftermarket or VW, but they can also be outrageously expensive.
