I recently obtained my cbt and this helped a lot as i was still a bit nervous about roundabouts. Doesn't help that 80% of cars will pass from the left hand lane and briefly cut through the right hand lane only to come back to left for the second exit. Which is why that right life saver is very important. Great video !

I took my CBTwith Roger at Wigan 4 Sept 2023. I"m 69 years old and had not sat on motorbike for more than fifty years. The only bike I had was a BSA C15 in 1970, I then pasted my car test and never rode a bike since. So as you might expect, a little nervous on the day. No problem with road craft having been driving for over 50 years and during that time had a brief spell as a driving instructor. The slow riding and manoeuvres were the most difficult parts for me. The car park is quite small, but soon got the hang of it. Then onto the road, to my surprise it was almost like I had never been off a bike. Because I lived local, I knew most of the the roads, so it was was good. My roundabout training was at Saddle Junction, not the easiest to navigate at 2 pm on Sat afternoon, we headed for Warrington and then took the bypass back to Wigan town centre, . Being a cyclist for 30 years helped in some ways but not others. My main issue was staying in the command position, soon sorted that though, and not cancelling my indicator. Other than that all went well. I can highly recommend RJH, and having been an instructor myself in the past, I have to say Roger was excellent. Will be looking to get further training with RJH when I have had more time on the bike.

Great video thanks. Got to do that lifesaver over right shoulder before leaving the outer lane for an exit from the roundabout just in case somebody comes of the inner lane tries cutting in front of you as your coming to the exit.

On my cbt there was a lot of stuf my instructor left out. Like I fell off hitting the front brake pulling out on a junction turn right. Never said rear only. Also told me dodge man hole covers etc but only when wet. Changed my bike school and now have my mod 2 next week. Great video thanks.

A question on your oft used 'check mirrors, cancel indicator'. What could go wrong if I cancel indicators before checking the mirrors?

Excellent video. Personally, most of the time, I'd drop down to 1st gear at a roundabout, unless it was large, clear and I could keep my speed. Now, if only more motorists would learn how to properly use a roundabout,

Brilliant video, really helpful. Could I ask you though, I see you pulled over into a cycle track, whilst explaining manoeuvres. On the test, when asked to pull over somewhere safe, would this be a fail, to stop in the track?. The highway code, is not very clear on this part.

indications for other road users to know where you heading,headchecks to make sure no cars beside you, indicating too early will cause confusion for other drivers. one question is headchecks do you only need to do them before exiting roundabout onto new road or just before entering roundabout especially if stopped hope that is clear.

Never say Never so consider shoulder checks when moving off. How long you've been waiting or your 6th sense tells you to look. The really important lifesavers are on exit particularly turning right so look over your left shoulder as you are in a way changing lanes. There is a gap that could be filled there by something big and metal.

Hi there, Did my CBT this weekend, and he said I need another lesson for lane discipline, I was okay when going through residential and the mini roundabouts, like what was shown in the video at 5:30 however on my CBT we can a roundabout similar to the one in the video and he was like "Ash take your 3rd exit" so I positioned myself in the far right lane, (3) but when going across the roundabout their was cars stuck infront of my 3rd exit, i paniced and slipped out of there and left on the 4th exit, what do i do when faced with something like that? Because i got told to not stop, but how? I am confused.

That’s reality and does happen. You need to always plan for this, be aware and do the safest thing, which might be going around again.

I’ve been taking lessons. Pass mod 1 no issues. Road training I feel I’m not beeing taught. First road lesson was told speed up to catch up while he followed another learner. I was already doing speed limit. Second lesson was just me and was followed. And trainer said I made ride boring.And was told made no mistakes . Still feel I paid to be trained. Feel like should have some info giving to me while riding. What’s ur thoughts on this. Have the 4 or so cbt learned me enough over years. Either way I’ve learnt more from your videos

Well I always say if you have not seen a change of speed limit sign then the speed limit should be the same. Always keep an eye for them when entering new roads. I wouldn't worry too much either as if you are taking your test in unfamiliar surroundings then you are generally more alert and aware. Keep us posted and if your in Cardiff remember those bus lanes ;-)

You are describing exactly the way I was taught to negotiate roundabouts. However, this relies on traffic joining a roundabout to give way to those already on it. I now live in Spain where I believe drivers/riders are instructed to follow the outside lane regardless of where they intend to exit...For those of us who were instructed the aforementioned this makes it pretty damn dangerous. From what I've seen on some KZbin footage the general rule is, get in such a position, increase speed so that one can lean on the horn and scream abuse, so shifting the blame for their own stupidity...When I first started riding...59 years ago...negotiating a roundabout wasn't so fraught with danger, Now, you are lucky to survive the experience.... My only advise would be ...Be constantly aware and Treat all Gagers (car drivers) as possible assassins and act accordingly...

When you take the right hand exit, you indicated before checking mirrors or looking behind. Shouldn't it be mirror indicate shoulder check manoeuvre?

Good question. The system to apply is OSM PSL O being Observations so a mirrors or a lifesaver however a lifesaver would be more favoured in this situation. In a car you use MSM PSL which is Mirrors. So Indicator then lifesaver is ok. Mirrors, Indicator, Lifesaver then Manouvre is a lot don't you think? Effective Lifesaver is essential.

Indicate early = shows other cars you're wanting to turn left and not go ahead. My instructor today said exactly on the roundabout going straight over - Left lane go around, life saver then indicate left not sure whats correct now or doesn't it matter?

Timing of indicator is crucial. Indicate off only after committing to the exit before the one you want. So indicate early is not necessarily correct.

When yo are turning right, I notice that you put indicator on without mirror first. Then before taking exit you do a life saver. My instructor does a lifesaver then indicate and then exit . I notice inconsistency between two approaches. Can you please comment on this?

Thanks for this video. Very useful. I have two questions. First, at about 5.20, you take a right lifesaver only as you exit the roundabout even though there was an exit before your second exit. Is there no need here for a left lifesaver as well? I understand that there is no lane to your left, which probably means that a left LS isn't necessary. But I would be grateful if you could confirm. Second question, I was told that for roundabouts with two lanes or more, you select your lane and maintain command position in that selected lane throughout (I guess to stop cars trying to muscle you out of position). But you took up what looked like position three in the righthand lane. Again, would appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks.

There's a double mini roundabout in the area I live in and I mean there's quite literaly only enough room to fit two cars side by side between the central white circles of these conjoined roundabouts. Visibly its really odd trying to establish how to tackle them on approach. They're on a slight brow or possibly it's just severe chambers of the roads mating up, not sure. I tend to treat it as if it's a T junction except that the top of the T is a line straight across the centre of both roundabouts with two lanes spuring off the left roundabout and two lanes spring off the right one and then obviously the long leg of the T is yet another road that leads to the central join between these roundabouts (well slightly more to the left one than the right, this is in addition to the previously mentioned four roads. Boggling.

Good question. It could be either left or right or neither depending on positioning and approach. I would look left if there was a cycle lane for example or I was unable to take position 1. I would look right if I sensed a hazard. Or I might not look at all if I was in correct position 1 and it was clear to emerge. KEY is be flexible.

I find that entering a roundabout with the straight on and over technique works well as no observations are needed also saves on using indicator fluid too. If entered at high speed with front wheel slightly lifted its an advantage as the kerb works well as a tool to help launch bike over any obstacles the council may have placed on the roundabout. I also must add though that upon landing a mirror check is usually necessary just in case someone behind you is using same technique. So Remember OSM/PMT / OBI 1 KINOBI.

Hi, stupid question, but I've had mix answers. Since doin my cbt and I go round roundabouts I've always applied a bit of rear break aswel as power, is this right or wrong. I came off my bike yesterday so I'm just questioning everything I might have done wrong

There is no right or wrong answer. More likely on a mini-roundabout. Bigger roundabouts always try and be in the correct gear and ride around, however if you need to brake then yes rear brake. Be aware also your rear brake light is a signal which will be seen by those following you. Hope this helps. Coming off? Was this on a roundabout and what do you think caused it?

Speed according to so many factors. Weather, Traffic, Size of Roundabouts etc.... You will be counter steering without even realising it, but could consciously introduce it if you feel the need.

I like to hold my clutch in at stops ..because it makes for a clean manover....and I don't have to change leg positions from bk brake to1st gear ...then move... but I've been told holding the clutch in will create a lot of wear on ur system.... bleh .. it is so much smoother when clutch is held though... damm clutch replacements getting me down$$$ 😆 .

Mark your not the first and you wont be the last. My advice is to have another lesson. You will do it. So many reasons you could hit the blue cone so identify the cause and develop.

Good question. If I was turning right yes absolutely. But I'm going straight on in the left lane. I would favour the right lifesaver as that is the area I'm moving into and anticipating the more likely danger as in someone in the right lane going straight on. Why look over the left shoulder when I can see there is nothing and Im moving to the right? Speak with your Instructor who can explain things for you.

I truly hate roundabouts.my town has one exactly like this but if you are the green car according to markings on the road you cannot follow the path he is making. Causes absolute chaos and there have been many accidents.

@@RJHMotorbikeTraining One exit plus another road joining, before my exit, which is at 1 o'clock and is the continuation of the road I'm on, on approach to the roundabout. My exit also goes immediately down to one lane on leaving the roundabout. Thank again

@@RJHMotorbikeTraining genuinely didn’t know that, I was always told unless you change lanes on the roundabout you’re supposed to leave on the same “side” that your joined on; I mean I never do this tactic of pulling out when a car is on the roundabout because I don’t trust anyone to be able to drive and is also why I have 360° Dashcams, but still

Section 184 Section 184 of the Highway Code is all about what to do when approaching a roundabout. To ensure you approach roundabouts safely you should look out for traffic signs, traffic lights and lane markings, all of which will help you to prepare for manoeuvring around the roundabout and identifying the correct lane. When approaching a roundabout you should: Use the mirror-signal-manoeuvre process Decide which exit you need to take as early as possible Use the appropriate signal at the optimal time to inform other road users of your intentions Section 185 explains what you should do when you reach the roundabout. Again it is important to be aware of the traffic around you and look out for road users who may be signalling incorrectly or in some cases not signalling at all! When reaching a roundabout you should: Always give priority to the traffic coming from the right, unless you have been directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights Check if the road markings allow you to proceed without giving way (always look right before joining just in case) Watch out for other road users on the roundabout Check the traffic has moved off in front of you before you proceed to enter the roundabout

Most difficult is to prove to the instructor that you were looking. Sorry instructors but even if I'm driving a car 15 years without a crash I would still have a problem with that if need to pass my car driving license again. Instructors in A2B Livingston you are bonkers😂
