Why are all these people trying to execute a man that is taking his own time to help others? I am about to take my test and I find myself looking for clarification on rear observations. This just did that and thank you. All the haters, trade your dummies in for a bike or a fresh nappy and ask your mum to change you but leave the helpful alone! I liked the checks when entering a new road. Gives a nice prompt to cancel them signals. Thank you

Hi, a car driver for 40 years, now relearning from the motorcyclists perspective...and test looming!! thanks for sharing this practice and safety routine, so important to identify who is behind and where! the mirror blind-spot often will not catch the speeder or the over-taker/undertaker from the left.. lifesavers are a ticket to ride!! ..safely... all the very best to you..

Just completed a five hour lesson before my mod 2 this Friday. The lady teaching me told me I don't need to do a lifesaver when pulling out to pass parked cars and when pulling back in. This goes against everything I've been told before. Also not to bother indicating if cars aren't behind me. Feels like if I follow this advice im going to fail miserably!
@RJHMotorbikeTraining4 жыл бұрын
Pulling away from behind a stationary vehicle from a standstill yes a lifesaver is necessary. Changing position whilst travelling because of stationary vehicles then consider a lifesaver if your mirrors are not enough? Depending on the distance you are covering. Indicate to change positions? Overtaking stationary vehicles? Unlikely. We have some great videos on here for mod 2. Take a look and ask away any questions

Just found your videos, thanks very much. They are very informative and really useful. I plan to take my advanced motorcycle course soon, purely to make myself a smoother and safer rider. This is what your videos are teaching. What angers me is all these morons who criticise and say ‘too many mirror checks’ or ‘you shouldn’t do this or that’, half the time these are the people who have a higher chance of accident or injury. What ‘advanced’ teaches you is to anticipate and plan, this is what you are doing very patiently and very well. I was taught by Police that you should scan your mirrors every 10-15 seconds. Makes perfect sense to me, as I’d always like to know and see what traffic is doing behind me, so I can react and adapt. I’m sure there are more appreciative people out there who don’t think to criticise and attack all the time. Thanks very much for the videos, from a very grateful and quiet silent majority. Matt

hi got a question to ask you. as i have my mod 2 shortly in the current few days . let say I'm joing a dual carriage way im on the slip road built up speed to 70mph i have the examiner behind me and there is a lorry lets say he doing 56 mph and I'm nose to nose with him and there is a car behind him. I'm running out of slip road. am i supposed to drop back in speed so basically putting me in a position or being up his rear end as i will then have to cross in to lane 2. or am i supposed to fill that 2 second gap between the lorry and car . i have heard of people failing there test because of this reason as they have slowed down. which then would put motorists behind you and your self at risk of being rear ended. hope this make sence best regards

i dont know why hes doing left shoulder check after going around the lorry. my understanding is that when taking up lane positions only a mirror check is needed since you arent moving out of the lane itself only within it. otherwise youd be shoulder checking every time you corner since you naturally use the width of the lane.
@RJHMotorbikeTraining3 жыл бұрын
Well a lorry would take up a lot of width. Do an experiment of where your blind spot is and you might be suprised and think differently.

@@RJHMotorbikeTraining what are you looking for though, if your going around a parked vehicle then you go back to your normal lane position theres no benefit in looking at the pavement or the parked vehicle. if you did the same manoeuvre in a car you wouldnt be expected to look in your left hand mirror. the likelihood of something attempting under take you in this situation is so remote i would suggest if thats from any formal guidance that its probably over due for a re write.

Having moved from the US and Canada, this is really helpful. I realise you're teaching to the UK MOD2 standard and not asking for any justification for why teach that. My question is this: Why does the test require shoulder checks when passing an obstacle or when setting off from a stop? Is it, like, in case there's a crouching cheetah that's going to overtake you on the inside and bite your leg? In those two cases (setting off, passing an obstacle) I'm scratching my head at what vehicle or other reasonable risk is avoided by shoulder checks in those circumstances IF you're watching your mirrors and observing ahead already?

Indirect are mirrors and direct are lifesavers (shoulder checks) Ride in the City and miss those shoulder checks and that crouching cheetah will bite your leg

hello. when turning right or left at a junction, do i have to take a lifesaver before i turn? if im turning left, do i take a left lifesaver or a right lifesaver. thanks
@RJHMotorbikeTraining9 жыл бұрын
+wanni Hi fella. OSM PSL. Mirror, signal, manouvre, position, speed, look. Have you stopped at the junction? Are you meaning minor to major? If so I would recommend this.
@DC-vo1pj2 жыл бұрын
This is a great question and I one I have ahead of my mod2. When joining a major road from a minor, it feels risky to be doing a rear check as your final obs before pulling out. Surely the focus should be on joining the faster road safely?

Nice video, I have my mod 1 and 2 in November, I'm really confused about these observations on roundabouts. So turning right on Roundabout my instructor says once I pass the exit before the one I'm exiting , indicate, then left shoulder check , then move over and exit, and then on exit further right shoulder check. I notice you dont do the further right shoulder final check , and either do a lot tbh , is it necessary? I feel it distracts me from looking at my exit, your taught to look where you are going , but 2 shoulder checks in a row is distracting , also going straight ahead at roundabout, my instructor says once you get to first exit exit do a left lifesaver , then another right lifesaver once you exit , yesterday this caused me to drift into next lane because I'm not looking where I'm going, but a lot of people dont seem to mention the 2 checks, is my instructor wrong, or did he add the right lifesaver on exit thinking its safer ? I read mcn magazine article and they say coming off a roundabout, perform left lifesaver for cyclists , so I'm hearing 3 different things, what's your opinion?

rob... would you say lifesavers should be behind shoulder or is 90 degree ok? im finding i can throw the bike off balance by trying to look too far around.. also can hurt the neck lol
@RJHMotorbikeTraining9 жыл бұрын
MrCaptcash A Lifesaver is checking the area (blind spot) that is not covered in your mirrors. A chin to shoulder movement should be sufficient when moving, as any more could make you wobble etc....and yes a stiff neck. Leave the stronger Lifesavers for when stationary such as moving off etc.....

This isnt the way I'm being taught,,when you turn left I was told to do a left shoulder observation as you move into position , and coming off a roundabout I was told to do a right shoulder observation before you take you exit
@RJHMotorbikeTraining4 жыл бұрын
Key is be flexible. Talk to your instructors. I would say a lifesaver to change position to turn would be unnecessary but them would depend on the distance your position would be. Never say never. Right shoulder on exit on a roundabout? The only time I could think this would be necessary is straight on in the left lane. But speak with your instructors and discuss options ok
@S01-k9z4 жыл бұрын
@@RJHMotorbikeTraining I agree with u, I dont think my instructor is any good , going straight on at rounabout expects a left lifesaver once u pass first exit ,,then a right one over the shoulder when leaving, if it's a small roundabout which it was on our lesson it means I'm not looming where I'm going

At the end you were undertaking on a wide single lane road, so that is ok? Just asking as obviously safe on the left than go wide into the path of oncoming traffic.

Conflicting information from different instructors. When changing position within your lane, you dont do a lifesaver, only when changing lanes? Ive also watched others do lifesavers when moving from command position within the same lane? Confused lol

@@RJHMotorbikeTraining So you dont have to do a lifesaver when changing position in the same lane? Personally dont think its ever really needed unless its a really wide lane. Then it has some merit, as your moving more than just a few feet

good video but would query last few mins.... filtering down left of cars. surely a fail on mod 2 and dangerous imo
@RJHMotorbikeTraining9 жыл бұрын
MrCaptcash Fair comment. Why would you question filtering as you put it? If you knew the road you would have a better understanding of the undertaking of slower moving traffic here.I was ndertaking there is two lanes, narrow in places albeit but two lanes, and the majority of cars as you can see are straddling the lanes. I would put it down to making good progress there, and certainly was safe and not dangerous, as my speed was enabling me to stop in the distance i could see in and if any hazard was to of presented itself. Now the demo itself was to discuss Rear Observations, and i think it does quiet well. Would i have failed my Mod 2 test, well thats another story and this demo wasn't intended to show a Test Ride. Thanks anyway and im glad you like the video :-)

Too much. You'll drive into the back of someone looking behind you constantly. I feel like I'm a safe rider, I always check my blind spots before changing direction, before lane mergers or when I feel there's enough room for someone to try an overtake ect but I'm sure I'd fail my test only doing those checks.

It is too much, but in a mod 2 test - failure to miss any of these observations can result in minor faults which can build up into fails.

On average how many lessons do the people that can already ride a geared bike need?
@RJHMotorbikeTraining9 жыл бұрын
Boris theBlade Hi fella, depends on a few things really. As you probably know you need to complete CBT, Theory, Mod 1 and Mod 2. Have you completed your CBT? If not then thats one day. Have you ridden BIG bikes? If not thats another day at least to convert you. As you can see the days can mount up so it depends on your ability. Our most popular training course is our 5 day course. Visit www.rjhgroup.co.uk all details are on there. Or give Lisa a call on 07761 756576 and she could discuss the best course for you.
