Why can't we have more progressive leaders here in the US? Well done, UK and France! Vive la liberté!
@EmmaVB826 ай бұрын
As a UK leftist, it’s honestly been a hugely relieving weekend! I mean, I’m very much not a fan of the Labour party under Keir Starmer and all they’ve done to hew to the culture-war-iest social views from the right, as well as their essential indivisibility from the Conservatives on their support for Israel and their genocidal attacks on Palestine… AND to top it all off, their solemn vows to hold to the same fiscal rules as the Tories that will undoubtedly result in some form of austerity (as they refuse to increase taxes on the rich)… but I don’t think they’re as bad as the Conservatives on so many levels (and after 14 years, oh boy is it time for a change). And I’m heartened by so many of the seats (like my own) where their substantial majority was drastically eaten into by more left-wing progressive candidates (whether Green Party or independents like Jeremy Corbyn ❤) who came second. While Keir Starmer’s Labour Party has been systematically removing a lot of the letists over the last 5 years, the results will hopefully give them some pause for thought about actually listening to the calls to introduce/support policies that represent those of us on the left (the media narrative has been about a swing to the right, with support of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party increasing, but that’s not at all the only here - Labour lost a lot of vote proportion to candidates and parties further left than them)! And I’m very pleased we now have four Green Party MPs, up from only one for the past 14 years! 💚 They’ve slowly and steadily been building support locally for many years, and gaining more and more support in local councils etc; but this result is incredible for them, and as a very progressive environmentally-conscious party, I think this means everyone in our country and the world is better for it (in whatever small way!) Likewise, I’m overjoyed to see the results in France this weekend! I had a deep sense of foreboding that it was going to go the way of a swing to the far right like many other countries in Europe, and the first round of results definitely played right into that. But I ended up going to bed last night feeling triumphant about the way the New Popular Front had surged forth after the “compromise coalition” hastily put into action to stop the advancement of the hard right. It’s not what I expected, but I feel like the political world on the left could use at least a little bit of positive news 😊 Solidarity, my American friend! Wishing you the best possible outcome in your own elections this year ✊

Britain, Iran, France, election,s fair true democratic people support elect leaders. Where india unfair elections with election commission support BJP party, if ballot papers election no doubt BJP won't come minority in power.

RIP Jane McAlevey 😢 I learned about her through your reporting right here (as a clearly under-educated UK leftist!), and she was an incredible and brilliant woman; who impressed me and moved me to tears in almost equal quantities back in April. I know she had a huge impact on the world, both in terms of her direct actions and through the myriad ways in which she inspired others to take actions themselves (I’ve just read Katie Miles’s piece about her in The Nation, and I’m feeling that reflected sense of inspiration and impact Jane had through Katie’s writing); and while I know it’s absolutely nothing in comparison to the sense of loss, I hope Jane’s friends, family, and loved ones take some small solace in knowing that she was known and loved far and wide 💙

Biden was clearly was listing some of the things he did, not what he was. He did serve with a black president, he does have a woman vice-president who is black, he did break barriers, and more importantly, he has been a good president. He has worked for the common people and did things that needed to be done. Given a cooperative congress and senate he will do more. He is the hope for the future of our democracy.

It is sad to witness how many Americans are trying to ‘squeeze’ Mr. Biden out while openly practicing edge discrimination.
