Don't you think it's weird that convicts aren't allowed to vote in the US? I mean, they're still citizens. Convicts and prisoners can vote in my country, and I think that's fair.

Laurann: I find your concern unique. You're privileged to feel and share. I don't believe those convicted gave much thought to voting privileges being suspended upon perpetration of felonious endeavors, or much cared. Where do you reside?

Convicts, the way I see it, are a large demographic that don't get any representation at all, so their problems are not heard or dealt with. Politicians are not motivated to stick up for this demographic, because they can't vote anyway. Since poor people are more likely to end up incarcerated (can't pay for expensive lawyers), and convicts are more likely to end up poor (can't get a job with a criminal record), this decreases the representation poor people get in government. In the US, where more people are incarcerated than anywhere else in the world (making this demographic larger than anywhere else), I think this issue is especially pressing. I would honestly count it as a form of voter suppression, we all know Republicans have been trying to get less poor people to vote for ages, and I think you're probably aware of what Nixon admitted the 'war on drugs' was actually about.. And honestly why would you take away convicts' right to vote? It doesn't help deter them from committing crimes. What good does it do? I live in the Netherlands. By default, convicts still get to vote, unless the judge decides to take away that right. Even in those cases, the convict still gets to let someone they trust vote for them. I think this is meant to keep seriously mentally unstable people from voting, and not as a type of punishment.

Laurann : Well placed and presented. Very much in agreement with you, but the poor are more likely to be incarcerated because they are in the majority when it comes to committing crimes. If they were allowed, the government would find ways to negate their count. The government does it with the eligible. Yes, I'm aware of Nixon's schemes, a few president's before and those after. If felons were allowed to vote, there wouldn't be much difference, not here. President Trump lost the popular count. No, this is not America. Thank you, for a such a thought provoking topic.
