I'm near the central east coast of FL & we are bracing for hurricane Milton. Its the people on the western gulf coast of the state I'm truly feeling for. I don't take pride in saying this, but Netanyahu is not wrong about his evaluation of Lebanon's decline over the past 4 decades. I'm an Arab. I lived and grew up in the Middle East. We can't blame Israel for all of our problems, especially not problems stemming from religious extremism post the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Iran -- all of those countries look unrecognizable today compared to the early & mid 1970s. The hard-right turn toward embracing religious autocracy as opposed to "western-style democracy" by our own leaders led us to this state. I know that's a gross oversimplification, I know. And I'm not excusing Israel or the US from meddling. But at the end of the day it was the people, us, my own countrymen, who flocked to religious ideology and decided the Middle East was better off retreating to the dark ages than advancing forward on our own terms. _We_ (men) decided that it would be better for women to be treated as second class citizens, for religious minorities to be targeted, and for secular governments to cease to exist. We cannot blame Israel for that. And anyone who isn't at least willing to agree with me in-part is rejecting the hard-lived truth of many Arabs in that same region. My perspective isn't unique by the way. Lots of other Arabs agree. But we live under regimes that would rather see us muzzled and covered head to toe than to express our views without fear of retribution. Alas, I don't know what can be done to change this. Perhaps nothing will change until we reach a breaking point with our own governments and we decide to make drastic changes.

Whilst what you say seems to be the truth from my very limited knowledge, in no way, shape, or form does it excuse the ethnic cleansing of Muslims as per Israeli and American weaponry actions. If one is against the death penalty, one is against the death penalty REGARDLESS of the crime the convicted on death row bears. It's the same with Palestine and Lebanon. Being fanatic does not justify the Genocide, the Ethnic Cleansing, and the Apartheid of the fanatic. But to the point, I don't see the majority of Muslims as fanatics as the West likes to paint them in the mainstream discourse of our so-called failed 4th Estate. If us, who seek to uphold the rule of law, do so in utmost hypocrisy, as is the case of the US, Britain, Germany, Switzerland, and Israel, then we have no morals to stand on - we are as good as any fanatic. What I meant to convey was that Arabs in the Middle East face two distinctly hostile forces, Western ones and internal self-inflicted ones. And I argue that the latter has caused more harm in the long term, sad as that might be for me to admit. Our self-inflicted harm stems from many things, including a rejection of colonialism. But that's only part of the story. Colonialism ended in the Middle East in the mid twentieth century, and the countries I mentioned above (Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and Iran) _thrived_ economically for several decades after the end of British and French rule. And when I say we thrived, I mean it. Education was robust. Women were free to cover up or not. The average household income was ridiculously high compared to Europe. For goodness sake, at one point in the 1970s, 1 Iraqi Dinar was worth 3 US dollars (not even the British Pound is that strong). Arabs could vacation like kings and queens in Europe. But this is no longer. With the 1979 Islamic Revolution, followed by Iraq's invasion of Iran, the Ba'ath Party's autocratic rule in Iraq & Syria, and with the rise of Hezbollah in Lebanon financed by Iran, our societies started to rot from the inside out. The rot took many shapes and forms, and it was a moral rot just as much as it was an economic rot. Literacy rates dropped. Corruption spiked. Women's rights were eroded and nearly erased in the name of Islamic virtue. The right to worship freely and convert religions became a capital crime. And much, much worse. Believe me, no one has hurt us more than our own governments. The US and Israel are responsible for genocide, yes. But so are our governments who've committed genocide against us to keep us from living freely. Saddam gassed tens of thousands of Kurds, and persecuted hundreds of thousands of Shia Muslims. Bashar Al-Assad did the same in Syria, and Hezbollah used everyday Lebanese civilians as human shields in their war against Israel. Not to mention Iran's diabolical crackdown on any whisper of dissonance and protest. My point is that before we blame Israel and the US for our own woes, we need to be honest about the woes brought upon us by our own leaders. And you're right, the average Muslim Arab is by no means an extremist; far from it. Many have tried to challenge the status quo and tried to make reforms happen, but to no avail. Human history is full of examples of how religious authoritarianism and propaganda was used to subjugate people and keep them ignorant. For goodness sake, it wasn't even know about the Holocaust until I immigrated and fled my home country in my late teens. Why? Because my Iraqi government at the time didn't want new generations to live with any kind of empathy toward the pain of our neighbors and cousins, the Jewish people. Every morning we would gather outside as students, we would sing the national anthem, and then we would descend into 10-minutes of horrifying propaganda of singing Party Slogans and chanting anti-US/anti-Israel obscenities. This is how we were indoctrinated to hate from a young age. None of this excuses western aggression -- never. But it's important for us to be honest about it because it played a big role in shaping the state of the Middle East today. Anyone who denies the deep culpability of Arab/Muslim governments in the Middle East in terms of how our countries turned out is rejecting over half of the problem in stubbornness, and that's not right either.
