Top Zimbabwe ambassador involved in gold smuggling scheme

One of Zimbabwe’s most influential diplomats, Uebert Angel, offered to use his status to launder millions of dollars through a gold-smuggling scheme, during an undercover operation by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit).
Angel, appointed ambassador-at-large and a presidential envoy by Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa in March 2021, told reporters he would be able to carry large volumes of dirty cash into the country using his diplomatic status.

I'm not African but I know what is going on. There are sanctions on some countries Zimbabwe inclusive, which prevents them from directly trading internationally as a nation. This is the core reason for the low currency value of these countries. One of the basis for strengthening any currency is international trade and any sanction imposed on this must definitely result into economic downturn. This is why I'm asking a more imperative question 'why should a country be sanctioned because they want to control their own resources? I'm not a Zimbabwean and I have no personal interests there but my above question should be the main focus of Zimbabweans because the sanctions are the reasons for their poverty. They have lots of natural resources but everything is politicised and people's attention are shifted from these real issues like SANCTIONS Zimbabwe's real offence is that they want to control their own resources against the will of some so called world powers. The reason individuals are used for such transactions which is now labelled as mafiarism because of politics and blackmail is that individuals are not sanctioned but the nation is. That's why you can trade internationally freely as individuals from Zimbabwe but the government or nation can't. So to generate national revenue, the nation would usually commit these things to the trust of individuals who are versed in international trade, have access and sales strategies to transact and remit proceeds to the nation. This is one of the ways these sanctioned nations make revenue to finance their national budgets. This is nothing new about such negotiations being carried out by the ambassador from Zimbabwe, it's been a way to work around sanctions from time immemorial just that this particular case has politics and blackmail involved in it but I believe there's no law that can stop it nor make it illegal because it would be an encroachment on fundamental human rights on freedom of trade. Mind you that even farm produce, other agricultural products and anything can be traded internationally by any sanctioned nation using this strategy.
