Thanks for sharing. This was one of Elvis' greatest performances. A lot of folks dismiss him as an artist for the 1960s films/music...but I feel he proved with the " 68 Comeback Special" that he was among the best singers of all time, again with "Elvis : Aloha Live from Hawaii" in January 1973. I feel like though, this video short only scratched the surface of "The Story Behind this particular song" I recommend folks seek out more about it.

I believe he only sang it twice. Both times were during filming the 68 special. Spectacular performance.

Elvis sang this song beautifully, written for him, inspired and moved by the killing of MLK. It was the highlight of his TV special, recorded in June of 1968. James Brown helped stop the MLK riots by doing a live concert on TV from Boston, because the government knew blacks would listen to Mr. Brown, he helped save lives, let’s not forget this. Elvis recorded this song in the music studio, as well as live on stage for the special dressed in the white suit. He lip-synched the song during his stand-up live performances (black leather) in the special, which is a bit of a shame, because he was a superb live singer, and it would have done very well before a live audience, imo. But maybe it would have been too taxing on his voice, along with all those rock n roll songs in-between ? A few corrections to the man giving the story. Elvis was already in production for the TV special, when he heard about the killing of MLK, he was by all accounts deeply affected and concerned, and glued to the TV, like everybody else. That was the basis for him and the producers to ask Earl Brown to come up with a song that would reflect his feelings and wish for America at this time, which was unifying the country, away with hate and racism, same as James Brown’s wish, when you’re familiar with his interviews and music at the time. Elvis continued that determination on principal with how well he treated The Sweet Inspirations, awarding them top treatment, when in Houston Texas, big stadium concerts there in January/February 1970, they didn’t want the girls to accompany him, he said if you want me, they are with me, or I’m not coming, and they relented. That was his statement. Another correction is the fact that by 1968, Elvis had already been making good recordings again, gospel, blues, pop, country… since 1966, the year of his real music comeback apart from the movie soundtracks. By 1969, during the American Sound sessions in Memphis, think “Suspicious Minds” or “In The Ghetto”, he was back firing on all cylinders, then going off to pulverize Vegas and then the country.

Composer Billy Goldenberg and lyricist Walter Earl Brown were asked to write a song to replace "I'll Be Home for Christmas" as the grand finale on NBC's Elvis, taped from June 20-23, 1968 (now also known as ‘68 Comeback Special).[5] Knowing about Presley’s fondness for Martin Luther King Jr., and about his devastation related to his then-recent assassination in Memphis, Brown wrote "If I Can Dream" with Presley in mind.

Yep. Robert Kennedy had trouwens een innige band met Martin Luther King. De 2e aanslag in korte tijd shockeerde Elvis dermate dat hij persé met dit lied wilde eindigen in z'n comeback special. "Colonel Parker was not amused"

Ik snap de maatschappelijk impact van dit nummer maar heeft Elvis niet nog meer toffe dingen gedaan dan alleen if I can dream, jazeker. Mag ookwel een keer getoond worden.

That was absolutely not what Elvis meant it to be... If he could only see what the world has become, and especially the US, He would be ashamed. This should be the worlds anthem, in a fair and real world. If I can dream, everyone can.
