Featuring amateur archaeologist, enthusiast and multi-award winning investigative filmmaker, Simcha Jacobovici, The Naked Archaeologist is an irreverent, entertaining and eye-opening journey into the fascinating archaeology of the ancient world. Along the way, new discoveries are made, lost treasures revealed, and ancient mysteries uncovered.
Who was the Beloved Disciple? Mentioned five times in the gospel of John, but never named, scholars have speculated about the identity of the "disciple whom Jesus loved" for centuries. Could it be John himself, or Peter, or even Mary Magdalene? Or is it a code for a disciple whose identity had to remain secret? It's a two thousand year old mystery, and the Naked Archaeologist is on the case.

I'm reading John as well. Te account of the passion. John 19 25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen. 26 When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: Woman, behold thy son. Now how could Jesus say "Woman behold your son" if John was not there? Jesus has to talking about a male figure hence the word "son".

I have recently started following your videos which I find interesting but this particular one is very easy to puncture holes into. One huge vacuum you left was dealing with the explanation of the description of the beloved disciple in John 21: in the last verses especially verse 25 where the writer says 'this same disciple is the one testifying ( in the continuous tense) and has recorded these writings '. The general consensus is the gospel of John was written in the turn of the century between 90 and 100AD by which time James was dead. Who was the only disciple of christ alive at that time, there you have your answer- JOHN/ YOHAN/ YUNUS. James died in 44 AD. So, while I understand the temptation to create a conspiracy theory, we must not lead people in the path of untruth as the whole goal of archeology is to get as much truth as we can from ancient evidence.

lazarus was the beloved Disciple. It is written in the Gospel of John, that Jesus loved Lazarus. Also his sister Maria was a witness from the scenes from Golgotha..so it makes absoluty sense that Lazarus was going with her. Maria the mother of Jesus was very old at that time, so she overnighted perhaps in Bethany where Lazarus lived. Because i can't imagine that she going her way from Nazareth to Jerusalem...too much distance for sn old woman. I am prety sure that she lived with Lazarus and his famiy. When they received the message that Jesus get crucified, Lazarus took both Marias (his sister and Jesus mother) to go and be an eyewitness from golgotha. On the cross Jesus made it official, that Lazarus is now the son from maria.

The beloved disciple is mentioned only in John. John's gospel includes much material that isn't in the other three. According to John 21:24, the gospel writer used the beloved disciple as his source. In other words, the beloved disciple is a construction whose primary purpose is to explain how John could know things about Jesus that no one else did.

It couldnt have been Thomas as it also says that after Peter and the beloved Apostle entered the tomb and saw the folded grave wrappings 'they believed' . Thomas didnt believe until Jesus showed him the wound in his side when they were all gathered again in the upper room after the resurrection. There was nothing to stop Thomas from having heard about the wound from somebody, so this just isnt conclusive proof that he was the Apostle at the Crucifixion.

At age 13 a male child was allowed to make their own decisions and can definitely believe that many children loved Jesus. Jesus was like a father to him, but it does not make sense for Jesus to never mention His own wife and children if He had them anywhere in the gospel, so I do not believe He personally fathered children. It is also easy to see Jesus holding the beloved, being a young man, to His bosom, just like a father would. Maybe the beloved disciple was an orphan?

These is too much fantasy in this blog. Maria Valtorta, an Italian mystic from the 1940's and 50's gives a very full and descriptive summary of Jesus's life and those associated with Him. The "brothers" were the sons of Thaddeus, Joseph's brother; they were therefore Jesus' cousins. Anyone interested in these times should give Maria a go. John was the Disciple Jesus loves AND as he was a very young man gave Peter, his "boss" the chance to go in before him after beating him in a race to the grave site.

Don’t get me wrong but in the gospels I with they did something like, “sorry I had to refer to Thomas to write that down because I forgot my papyrus, ink well and feather quill that day” Or “I had to refer to John because I’m illiterate.” And “don’t worry thought all the strife and death and rebellion with the romans and just struggling to survive the day, we locked that small papyrus quote in the secret strongbox for posterity.”

There was no children in the upper room where they were. Thomas could have been at work or visiting his family. It doesn’t tell us and it doesn’t matter. John didn’t go in until Peter to give Peter respect. John being a Christian and Thomas for that matter, didn’t do any more of the “Law”. Jesus said when you are born of the Spirit [of God/Jesus] we are completely forgiven of all sins. Past and present and future. And He told them they were under the Grace of God now. God doesn’t see their sim. God sees His son’s freely given, blood which washes away sin. Isaiah says we will be as white as snow. So no one would have to worry about cleansing ceremony anymore. Ex- If it was still in effect, the 2 Mary’s who was in the grave would have been “unclean”. Did you see that they didn’t even pay attention of that and neither did Peter, John and all of them in the “apt”/room. The dead babies was back when they sacrificed them to Molick. Read the middle of 1st kings to 2nd Kings. You will see for instance King Hezekiah’s fatherAhaz, was totally into idle worship. That’s why God was so upset with them, and he would have babies sacrifice to Mullick all the time and women who got pregnant outside of marriage had to sacrifice them as well unless they kept kept them secret. Also, they couldn’t drowned them in the water but I don’t think so because then everybody would see dead babies, so it sounds more like all the babies that were sacrificed to the idols. Look up the book, gods and kings. It’s a six book series. I listen to it on audible. The author is amazing and very studied and wrote about the kings in a novel that is very close to the Bible that will help you also.

Most religious scholars are aware of the theory that Jesus had offspring. Supposedly, he was married to Mary Magdalene, and bore children. This theory is not just in fictional writings, but has been around since the beginning. What a lot of modern religious scholars don't know, or don't ACCEPT, is that many gospels and "books" have been removed from the bible in the past, by Catholic leaders (Pope Constantine for instance), because they felt that the information was blasphemous or sacrilegious to their agendas and beliefs. So, you have religious leaders throughout history, removing texts from the bible, just like in ancient Egypt, where present pharaohs would deface and remove information of former rulers, because it didn't fit their religious and political beliefs. Study some of the texts from the lost gospels, and there is more enlightening information on Jesus

Excellent work! My own amateur investigation led me to think it was Thomas, but I never made the leap to consider it was his son - but it is plausible from a few perspectives. I include in that the possibility Thomas may have also been the "Stephen" that pre-conversion Paul instigated the stoning of - and his name later changed because it would've been so inflammatory to the early Christian church. (I wonder if any analysis has been done on the bones in the ossuaries). Either way, it definitely implies a major divide in the earliest Christian beliefs after Jesus - and it makes me more curious than ever to know what the original teaching of Jesus was, that folks were so fearful to want to cover up. I do disagree on a minor point James Tabor makes, implying that the 'inhuman Christ-only' version of Jesus was put forward by the mystic side of Christianity. It was surely the orthodoxy that wanted to drop the problematic human side.

From the book by Kamal Salibi,"Conspiracy in Jerusalem" The treason of Judas Jeshu Bar Nagara did not have to be betrayed by one of his own disciples for his life to end on the cross. He had made a conspicuous entry into Jerusalem: with a whip in his hand, he had openly led a riot in the precincts of the Temple, and then used the same precincts as his public platform--a fact to which all four Gospels attest. The High priest could immediately have had him seized and brought before them for questioning about his Messianic pretensions and unruly behaviour. There was no need to track him down because he was not living in hiding. On the night of his arrest, he was enjoying a leisurely supper with his disciples, after which the party went to a 'garden' outside the city to which everybody had access. When the men sent by the high priests arrived to arrest him,it is reported that Jeshu was surprised to find them armed (Mark 14:48-9;cf. Luke 22:52-3; Matthew 26:55 ): Did you come with with swords and clubs to capture me,as though I were an outlaw? Day after day I was with you teaching in the Temple, and you did not arrest me. All four Gospels, however, insist that Jeshu was betrayed, and repeatedly name his betrayer as Judas Iscariot--the disciple he trusted enough to make the keeper of his 'money bag'. For such a betrayal to be necessary, the whereabouts of the Master and his disciples on the day of his arrest--more particularly the place where they had the Last Supper---had to be secret. A story was told to suggest--but not explicitly state--that this was the case (Mark 14:12--15) On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened bread, the day the lambs for the Passover meal were killed,Jesus' disciples asked him,' Where do you want us to go and get the Passover meal for you?' Then Jesus sent two of them with these instructions: 'Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house he enters, and say to the owner of the house: the Teacher says, Where is the room where my disciples and I will eat the Passover meal?' Then he will show you a large upstairs room, prepared and furnished, where you will get everything ready for us.' This story about the mysterious man with the 'water jar' leading the two disciples to the secret premises where they prepared the Last Supper first found its way into the Gospel of Mark. Luke, who loved such stories, repeated this one from Mark almost word for word(22:7-12) Matthew, whose Gospel on the whole provides the closest parallel to Mark's, does not appear to have believed the tale. He repeats it but omits from it the man with the 'water jar' According to Matthew, the Last Supper was eaten in the house of a friend,or perhaps in a hired apartment (Matthew 26:17-18): the disciples came to Jesus and asked him, 'Where do you want us to get the Passover meal ready for you?' 'Go to a certain man in the city,' he said to them, 'and tell him: " The Teacher says.....'My discioles and I will celebrate the Passover at your house." John does not say where the Last Supper was prepared and eaten. His account of the simply says: 'It was now the day before the Passover Festival....Jesus and his disciples were at supper' (13:1-2). Unless one insists that the Gospel of Mark, being the oldest of the four, is the most credible on all counts, which is a commonly held view, the story it relates about the man with the 'water jar' who led the disciples to the mysterious 'upstairs room' where they prepared the Last Supper --a story repeated only by habitually credulous Luke---must be regarded as apocryphal. Had it been necessary for Bar Nagara and his party to have the Last Supper in a hideout, they would not have gone directly after the meal to spend the rest of the evening in a public park.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention Lazarus as a candidate. It could have been Lazarus in Mark who was in linen burial clothes that ran away naked. Lazarus was the ONLY person the Bible says Jesus “loved”. Peter asked Jesus about Lazarus because he was raised from the dead once, what would happen to him? Lazarus was the only one at the cross because he didn’t fear death like the rest of the disciples. Lazarus understood the resurrection at the tomb because he was familiar with all of the burial clothes and mentions them by name. I was surprised none of these items were even mentioned.

Mary M held a viable position and she could very well have been "a disciple and a wife". I feel both have strong cases, that it would be James and Thomas. The Roman Priests remove much of James for Peter and Paul and left Thomas out. "Gospel of Thomas" qualifies based on their criteria and is arguably the most important of the New Testament Gospels. It is 99% Jesus speaking. Audio available on KZbin - appx 25 min listen. I just know Someone will go to most original Texts and with modern interpretation/translation skill experts, prepare a Most Accurate Possible Copy of the whole Bible and qualifying Gospels. *Please* Jesus was born as a human and he Ascended. It was the point. I never expectred Mary remain a Virgin her entire life, she married Joseph. ...and I'm a Catholic. Not so Roman anymore but Catholic.

At what point did Jesus meet Mary Magdeline? Wasn't it after he started his ministry? He obviously could not have married Mary M. and had a child old enough to have his own house to take in his mother? He couldn't be old enough to run to the tomb and enter. (Nor would an adult let him) An adult would not have allowed a young boy of Jesus descent stand at the cross and witness such tragedy as the crucifixion of his father. Why was Peter present when Jesus appeared? He entered the tomb! Why would the Beloved Disciple be the only one to honor Jewish tradition? It would not bother me at all to know that Jesus married and had a child. He was a human and God at the same time. He lived like a human, he was tempted beyond comprehension. Everything ancillary to that was living in a human body and maybe marriage and bearing children was not out of the question.

not to throw a wrench in the plan, but Jesus was only 33 years old. In order for his "son" to engage in a race, or have any meaningful interaction he would have to be at least close to 12 years old. Now its possible that Jesus could have a child at 20 or 21 years old, but if he did, the mother was not mary magdalene, the dates do not match up. Any son of Jesus would be far to young to meaningfully participate in the events of the gospel. You are likely, assuming Mary Magdalene was the mother, talking about a child who would be less than 3 years old at the time his "Father" died.

The beloved disciple is Mary Magdelene. The words are a figure of speech. He loves her most. Nope, any other is wrong. Jesus giving his mother to any disciple has nothing to do with his favorite. They are two separate incidents. Mary Magdelene and Jesus had a large family with many children. The romans' policy of preists and nuns prohibited marriage is sick like many other sexual sins they commit. Marriage was twisted by the romans in their pagan rituals. I found out some of the sick things about catholism and christianity. I became a Muslim. Later I decided to not have any religion.

@70AD-user45

That's correct. The beloved disciple did not die because the second advent was in 70 AD when the Son of Man came "on the clouds of heaven" (spiritually) in judgement against apostate Jerusalem when the temple was demolished (Matthew 24). The beloved disciple was kept alive to write the book of Revelation and the Gospel of John. I think it may have been Lazarus, who was a priest. The Gospel of John is different to the synoptics because it's a book of theology, written by the priest Lazarus. John's Gospel was probably written in 95 AD and the book of Revelation was looking back at the great tribulation of 70 AD or the "Day of the Lord", which was the second advent. Of course, if you don't recognise that the second advent was in 70 AD, that would make the beloved disciple 2,000 years old because he would have to be still alive today. Some people try and get round this problem, but ultimately fail.
