Editors Note: Couple of corrections. I accidentally said Keith had won 2 Cups, when of course, he's won 3. I also mistakenly said Kucherov finished 2017-18, second in points, when he was third in overall scoring. Thanks for not destroying me in the comments.
@brandontrost88886 жыл бұрын
I would say this was overall a pretty solid list. Though I think a few honorable mentions would have been nice for players that missed out only because of a strong draft class: (immediately Eric Staal and Malkin come to mind) I also think lots of these choices are really tough. Karlsson vs Stamkos especially... Stamkos was the second best goal scorer post lockout other than Ovi until his leg injury. He had 51, 45, 60, and 29 goals (lockout shortened 48 game season) prior to the injury. In his injury shortened season, he scored 25 goals in 37 games for another 50 goal pace season. Post injury, Stamkos has at his best scored 43 goals, but the last two years has become a very good playmaker with Kucherov. Would not be surprised if the Lightning manage to win a few cups and Stamkos gets compared to Steve Yezerman as both have had similar career arcs going from the scorer to the team player. (Yzerman's career high was 65 goals and 150 points in 88-89, when adjusted to era Stamkos's 60 goal 97 and point season in 11-12 is far better). Time will tell if the rest of his career can hold up, but so far looking good.

Yay let's jump on the hype train... We have absolutely no idea who will be the best player from the 2017 draft. Yes Pettersson is great right now but he hasn't even played a full season yet. And maybe there is a player that will make the NHL in the next years and play better than the others from this draft. What we can say at this point is that Hischier and Pettersson are the only ones that look like elite players right now...

Really impressive list and research done. Some disagreements: Jagr in 1990 Forsberg in 1991 Bergeron in 2003 Bäckström in 2006 Hedman in 2009. (Tavares crowning achievements are during his junior career. His Hart nomination happened when he was 17th in scoring) Hall in 2010 (Arguably) Gaudreau in 2011 Forsberg in 2012 Not knowing what the future holds, but I think that Elias Pettersson becomes the best player out of the 2017 class.
@TopCornerHockey6 жыл бұрын
Obviously, Jagr and Brodeur was a close call for 1990. I called Niedermayer the best of 91 because in most cases, I'd rather take a #1 Dman over a forward, even one as good a quality as Forsberg. Peter's shortened career affects his status too. Bergeron and Geztlaf was another close call in 2003. Thanks for sharing your thoughts here, Marcus.
@marcuswolin44546 жыл бұрын
Just curious. With the argument of taking a 1D over a forward, why Tavares over Hedman? Forsberg was a much better player compared to his peers than Tavares has shown so far, and Hedman is a arguably much better defenseman than Niedermayer (specially in his own zone). I personally find Niedermayer a bit overrated in these lists. He played most of his career on a defensive juggernaught in New Jersey (which he was a contributing factor to, but far from carrying), and his Conn Smythe should probably have been awarded to Pronger had he not been given a meaningless 1 game suspension. I think Niedermayer was a fine defensemen, and a deserving Hall of Fame inductee, but I dont hold him in the elite tiers of Pronger, Lidström, Bourque of his era.

I only had three differences to your list. 1982 - I had Gilmour at #2 behind Hall of Fame defenceman Scott Stevens who won 3 Stanley Cups, Conn Smythe winner, and 13 time All-Star. 1983 - Steve Yzerman - judging by the comments a lot of people agree with this one. 2003 - Patrice Bergeron - This was the toughest year to pick. Elias Pettersson broke Pavel Bure's Canucks rookie record with 28 goals/38 assists for 66 points in only 71 games and will likely win the Calder Trophy. This kid's hockey IQ and the way he thinks the game on an elite level to go along with his amazing hands and creativity is special. For anyone arguing that Jagr is better than Brodeur. Just no. Best goalie of all time IMO, and goalie's are much more valuable than wingers. For everyone saying it's because of the team he was on, Jagr only won cups with Lemieux, and Brodeur even took a garbage Devils team to the finals in 2012. The Devils certainly don't win 3 cups without him, and the Pens absolutely win back to back cups without Jagr considering he wasn't even in his prime at that time. Jagr would go second and that shouldn't even be a debate.

I agree with Jagr over Brodeur. Brodeur was a great goalie, but he clearly benefitted from facing about 12 shots per game including three quality ones. Between the stifling Devils defensive system, tolerance for clutch-and-grab hockey, the awarding of wins for overtime and an 82-game season, his wins total shines a little less brightly. That stifling system was led by Scott Stevens and Scott Niedermayer, who yourself claim to be better than both Eric Lindros and Peter Forsberg. Brodeur was the beneficiary of all of that. Jagr, on the other hand, was being dragged down by the defensive tactics of the era, had mediocre help after Mario retired the first time, and still was putting up great numbers.

@Shawnaldo75 Toews has 1 season where had a minus and it was a -1. Kopitar has 6 seasons as a minus and Bergeron also only has one but he was -28 and for most of their careers Toews has outscored him.

Re-re draft 2017 no doubt will be Cale Makar... as a Flyers fan it's sickening we drafted Nolan Patrick @ 2 when perhaps the best-scoring defenseman of this era was available 2 slots later in Cale Makar, who barring injury, undoubtedly will be a HOF'er :-///

Jagr should have been first in 1990. Bobby Clarke should have been first but teams were scared off by Clarke’s diabetes. They thought it would impair his ability to play. Medical sophistication wasn’t exactly stellar back then.

no Gretzky? no Moose? no Fedorov? no Kieth Tkachuck? were the Sedins drafted at the same time?
@AlyxiSistahTweaky255 жыл бұрын
Gretzky was never drafted by the NHL, Bourque edges out Messier for 1979, Fedorov is below Sundin and Listrom for 1989, and Keith Tkachuk would be behind at least Brodeur and Jagr for 1990. And yes, the Sedins were drafted 2 and 3 in 1999.
@semiretired865 жыл бұрын
how did Gretzky than end up in the NHL?
@AlyxiSistahTweaky255 жыл бұрын
@@semiretired86 In 1978, he was signed to a personal services contract as a 17 year old by the Indiana Racers, undrafted, in the WHL. He was then traded to Edmonton and signed to another personal services contract (10 years, $3M total) before they were in the NHL. Edmonton was one of the teams that moved to the NHL when the WHL folded, and Gretzky was one of the Oilers protected players for the expansion draft. He was not drafted by any NHL team in 1979 because they knew they had no shot of signing him due to the type of contract with the Oilers and the fact that he was guaranteed to be protected. No sense in wasting the pick.

Seguin has played with nothing but big name players his whole career. Hall has not and STILL has better points per game you gotta be nuts to think Seguin is better.

In everything, consistency is key. Ask any athlete and that's what they all want. Seguin has proven it, Hall has not. Thanks for watching, dude.

What do you mean when you say John Tavares was given exceptional status in the OHL?
@odoaceroftheneoromanempire71786 жыл бұрын
Wolf Daddy Tavares was allowed to play as a 14 year old in the OHL. The usual age for the OHL and the CHL in general are 16-21 years old. Tavares, McDavid, Ekblad and Sean Day are the only players to have been granted "exceptional" status in the OHL(after Tavares, it was only 15 year olds granted the status). Joe Veleno was given exceptional status in the QMHJL as well.
@wolfdaddy91506 жыл бұрын
So does this mean that Bobby Orr would have gotten exceptional status? He started playing got the Oshawa Generals as a 14 year old
@TopCornerHockey6 жыл бұрын
The OHL didn't have that "Exceptional Status"rule in play in the 60s. But Orr's influence was already so great that the Boston Bruins bought the Whitby Dunlops and moved them to Oshawa so Orr could play as close to home as possible. You'll never see that again.
