I am a huge fan of Curtis Joseph and a lot of times when I look at these lists he is very often overlooked and I want to personally thank you for putting him on there. He may not of had the awards or sadly no Stanley cups but in my ever humble opinion no goalie made a team better with little to no defense in front of him than Curtis Joseph!

Tim Thomas is the best goaltender in Bruins history. Though his tenure in Boston was brief he still accomplished more than Rask aside from the lifetime stats. 4-time all-star, Jennings trophy, 2 Vezina trophies, Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe. 2010-11 was one of the single greatest seasons ever for a goaltender. 35 wins in 57 starts, 0.938 SV, 2.00GAA and 9 SO and robbed of the Hart trophy because he was an American goaltender!

Evaluating short term success is hard. For those few years, Thomas as unbeatable. Although Rask has never been as unbeatable as Thomas was at his best, Rask has been very good for a long time now and I think that balance of consistency and longevity puts Rask at the top. Thomas is just behind Rask in both games played and wins. Career save percentage is identical. GAA is very close. It wasn't short term (7+ years) and it isn't hard to judge. The accolades posted above proves that. And Thomas has been just as if not more consistent than Rask. Rask was in net when they blew a 3-0 series lead and 3-0 game 7 lead. Rask was the guy when they blew a lead with a minute and a half left in game 6 of the cup. Rask was the starter in back to back epic regular season collapses to miss the playoffs. Yeah, saying consistency puts Rask over Thomas is absurd.

Billy Smith was an above average goalie in the regular season...but he would turn it up to high gear in the playoffs. And I'm sorry, but the Stanley Cup is the ultimate achievement for any player, and especially a goaltender. Well deserved HoF netminder.

I agree that the Stanley Cup is the ultimate achievement, but winning lots should not qualify you for the HOF. Henri Richard has 11 cup rings but he was only an ok player playing for a super team over many years. The Pocket was not the reason Montreal won the Cup(s). I think Turco had a pretty nice NHL career. Not HOF stuff, but not a journeyman either. A lot of people have forgotten him, but he was a good goalie. He made Team Canada's Olympic roster in 06.

Martin St-Louis is the first to come to mind for me. One Stanley Cup, two Art Ross (I think he is the oldest player to win the trophy) and one Hart. One of my absolute favorite players growing up

Marty for sure would be near the top of a best of undrafted list. Beautiful goal scorer. Just FYI, but Montreal's Herb Gardiner is the oldest NHL MVP when he won the Hart in 1927 at the age of 35. Dominik Hasek won the Hart when he was 33. St. Louis won it when he was 28. Still older than most when you consider Gretzky won his first at age 19, Mario was 22, Crosby was 19, Ovie, 22 and McDavid was 20. Younger mans game now.

Great idea, Etienne! Berard made a triumphant comeback but what would have been like without getting a Marian Hossa stick in the eyeball? This is what defines the all-time greats though, does it not? Hasek was the best goalie on any team he was on, as was Belfour, Brodeur, Joseph, and Roy (Toronto excluded: Joseph was better in his time in TO than Belfour IMO). These are the legendary greats that defined the era from 1988 -- roughly the end of the 2004 lockout.

Goalies with at least 20 games so far: H.Lundqvist (Rangers) *Obviously* R.Lehner (Sabres) J.Markström (Canucks) E.Läck (Flames) Almost at 20 games: A.Nilsson (Canucks) A.Forsberg (Blackhawks) Finland do have a stronger tradition of goalies in general, but especially goalies who have claimed that first spot and cemented their place in the history for sure for as long as I've lived and been interested in hockey anyway. I have no clue of the history there between the nations before my time though (1991).

Deservedly so. Roy is easily the best for Colorado and I think he's a better goalie than Dryden for Montreal. Dryden played behind one of the best lineups in history. Roy was the Habs best and most reliable player for them during his time in the 80s and 90s. Thanks for watching, Mr. Master-Me.

I feel like Osgood doesn't get enough credit. His regular seasons were only okay, but his playoff numbers were pretty good, especially in years they made a cup appearance. in each of the years they made a finals appearance, he stole at least one series. Just my opinion, though. Good video.

Glad you liked the video, Tommy. Ossy was a good goalie that was clearly insulated with the help of a HOF lineup around him. When he was in St. Louis or NYI, he never had the same success he did in Detroit because he didn't have the exceptional talent around him. @@TopCornerHockey The amount of disrespect for Osgood is sickening. A "good goalie on a great team". Just gonna act like Roy, Brodeur or Hasek played on teams full of scrubs and Osgood had it easy. Osgood put up winning records with the Islanders and Blues, it's the team that ultimately succeeds, it doesn't fall solely on the goaltender. Osgood's regular season and playoffs GAA and SV% is right up there with the other three along with his win % as well. And it's not like he's dead last out of the four. You just hate him because he was quiet, not flashy and outspoken like the other big name tenders of his era. For just a "good goalie" he sure stood on his head posting a GAA of 1.55 and 2.01 in the 08 and 09 playoffs respectively. SV% of .930 and .926. Pretty damn good for an AvErAgE gOaLiE in his mid 30's with a pretty well aged group playing in front of him. Hasek couldn't get it done in '08, but Ozzie did. Do you really believe Ty Conklin would have gotten the Wings to a Game 7, let alone to the Finals, with that roster in front of him that Osgood had? Hell no. Hasek only won his cups because of the ridiculously stacked Wings roster in 01-02 and Osgood in 2008. But keep on hating bud.

Yeah, Winnipeg born and raised. We've had to endure the entirety of our franchise with noticeably sub-par goaltending. I still remember going to games as a kid watching "Pokey and the Bandit" (Reddick/Daniel Berthiaume) stink up the position before the likes of Bob Essensa,Nikolai Khabibulin etc etc added their own persistently weak performances. So after Pavlov and Mason being pretty disappointing, this year has really been a treat. I don't think anyone in the city or NHL expected Hellebuyck to come back this year as the number 1 but for the first time in franchise history, I'd say we FINALLY have a playoff contending team. And furthermore, we've got a ton of firepower coming up through the ranks to make us solid for years to come.

I used to live in Dauphin and have traveled Friendly MB extensively. Always nice to meet another Bison! I remember those Essensa years well. Bulin was great in 96 and helped the Jets push their final season just a little longer thanks to his goaltending. It's nice for you guys to have Hellebuyck playing so well. Grew up watching Cheevers but Task is better. Good call there. I know that this video is four years old and Lightning fans hated losing Bishop but Vassy turned out to be the greatest goalie in Lightning history and perhaps, with turn out to be , the greatest goalie of all time. I know is suggested worst starter per franchise so I'll put some rules in place. They must play a minimum of 2 seasons and playoffs do not count and that would disqualify a few players so Craig Billington as hard as he worked would still be the senators for example. I am also curious to try a different set. Best homegrown goalie (drafted) and best traded for goalie per franchise. So for Pittsburgh the best stated is Marc Fleury. And their best traded for would be possibly Tom Barrasso

If I'm not mistaken, Billy Smith remains second all-time in playoff winning percentage. Dryden is first. Also, Gretzky says he's the best goalie he's ever played against.

I certainly enjoy your videos, but as a St. Louis Blues fan since 1967, I have to take issue with your selection of Mike Liut as the all time best Blues goaltender. Sometimes you have to look past the stats and tenure and examine what the player(s) meant to the team. The duo of Hall/Plante was the absolute best of times for St. Louis goaltending, which admittedly has been sub-par. That duo made games competitive every night rocketed an expansion team to the Stanley Cup playoffs in the early years. The Blues owe much of their early success to the duo, the Blues might not even be in St. Louis has been for Hall/Plante regularly stealing games. There was a lot of talk of moving to Saskatoon!! I'm guessing Samuel Frick from below couldn't be 30 years old....Jake Allen will need to remedy his mid-season win less slumps to be considered as the numero uno Blues goalie. BTW, I have an Elliot signed puck and an autographed photo of a maskless Glen Hall in my office. You can have the Elliot puck, but I'll die before I give up the Glen Hall pic.

I think your list is slanted to more recent years. Quick over Vachon, for instance ? Roy over Dryden for Habs ? Numbers don't tell the whole story: Gilles Meloche was an amazing netminder for awful, awful teams. Given what I said, the potential is there to list Greg Millen as a better netminder than Glenn Hall for the Blues....just sayin'. Not everything is qualitative in stats....

While I agree with Roberto Luongo's selection in Vancouver, King Richard (Brodeur) deserves mention. He put the team on his back in 1982's run. Too bad the numbers in the '80's made every goalie from that era look mediocre. Great list anyways!

I think the only team I gave an honourable mention too was McLean in Van. I did that because a good friend of mine grew up a huge Kirk McLean fan, so I tossed that in for him. Usually I don't do honourable mentions. You're right about 80s goalie stats. A lot of people thought I should have picked Hasek for Detroit. Although his success there is unquestioned, he only played 2.5 yrs there. Osgood was the staple for the Wings for over a decade. No question, Tony O gets the nod in Chicago. In Dallas, I thought he would be the guy, but after looking at the numbers (both individually and team) I really had to go with Turco. It's too bad because Eddie is great and he just got edged out a bit in both cities where he had a major impact. I could never forget him though. I've been to his home town in Carmen, MB many times. Just to be sure, I asked world renown NHL Trivia Expect Liam Maguire about your story. He says it never happened. Bobby Hull never had a backhand measure 97 mph. It's impossible. Hull's reported 118mph slap shot was recorded, as I said in the video, but Mr. Maguire agrees that measuring tools just weren't reliable in the 60s and 70s so it can never really be known how hard Bobby Hull fired his legendary shot. Well, I was a big fan of Bobby Hull when I was young. I went to an all-boys high school, and every other guy in the school hated Hull because of the way I went on about him after every game. him. I remember meeting Bobby Hull at the Kingston Airport as a kid. He was standing next to (then Prime Minister) Pierre Trudeau, who also stuck out his hand to me. "Yeah, yeah, " I said dismissively, "Lemme get back to Bobby." I made a picture of his autograph and didn't wash my right hand for a week. His slap shot of 118.3 mph for a 6 oz. (2,625 grain) puck would have had a kinetic energy of 170 foot pounds - almost as much as a 38 special revolver bullet. I notice the guy in the link claims that Hull told him that Paul Henderson had a slap shot of 125 mph, and thus uses it as an excuse to write Hull's stats off. However, it seems Hull may have had some drinking problems after retirement, and the writer doesn't mention how old Hull was when/if he said it. Perhaps, even IF Hull said such a thing, it might have been bar banter after everyone had a few.

No way Roy is the best Habs goalie since 1967. Ken Dryden did everything Roy did AND MORE in less time. He won his first Stanley Cup (1971) on an underdog team, he won the Conn Smythe before he won rookie of the year (only player to ever achieve that), he won 5 Vezina trophies, 6 Stanley Cups, and he did all that in only 9 seasons. Dryden had almost as many shutouts (46) as he did career losses (57). Roy achieved far less in his ten seasons as a Hab, and I won't even get into his crappy "me first" attitude which led to him being traded. Even if you never saw Dryden play (I was lucky enough to have done so) the stats alone say he's better.

Would you also say Roy had just as good of a lineup in front of him as Dryden did in the 70's? The tough part about comparing players from different eras is not only the way the game changes from decade to decade but also the players they have in front of them. If you're a Hand fan you probably already know how many hall of famers played in front of Roy vs those who played with Dryden. Plus the Habs would have won many of those cups with an average goalie in net. The two cups Roy won in Montreal would not have been won without his brilliant performances. And Roy also won a Conn Smythe before he was a rookie.

I love the choice for Boston! sure Thomas was great but he was short lived while Tuukka has been in the league for almost a decade now putting up fantastic numbers! Not only does he have the highest save percentage in the teams history but Rask has the highest save percentage in NHL history when it comes to goalies who have played more than 250 games! You never look at any Stanley Cup winner without first evaluating the goalie and Osgood was there for 3 Cups, so he certainly provided all the goaltending those great Wings teams needed. I'm just curious did u actually watch Dryden, Smith, Cheevers & Fuhr play? Or did u just make a list based on teams all-time goalie stats? Ur opinion is ur own, but if ur gonna make a expansion best goalie list, make sure it's really 1967 & not 1980 expansion. I guess u totally didnt see Edmonton's 1st Cup win of the Isle's in 83-84? Grant Fuhr was incredible. His 1-0 shutout in game one against an equally brilliant Billy Smith, was one of if not the best performances in playoff history! Ur obviously a modern day goalie fan , & that's fine. Just cant believe u underplayed, Dryden, Smith, & Fuhr's credibility to thier championship teams.

I was not alive during Dryden's or Cheever's days. I was just a baby for Fuhr and Smith. Given that info, I have little choice to evaluate these player from anything other than their stats relative to their contemporaries. I'm not so short sighted or foolish enough to look at Smith's GAA over 3 and say he's no good on that alone. No, I compare their stats. You provided an example of one game where Smith and Fuhr played great. Brian Boucher had a great week and a half once too, but his comparative numbers don't relate well to his peers at the time. You must have missed that I included Tony O, mentioned Terry Sawchuk, Glenn Hall and Normie Smith, proving I do understand NHL history and recognize it. I feel that you over empathize numbers in GAA and wins, which are more of a testament to the team's performance. One example would be Pavalec who had not many wins, but during that time he would face many many shots often at high quality scoring opportunities per game.

I don't know if you can over emphasize wins. That's the most important stat. There are some examples where it's quite misleading such as Ken Dryden having so many in so little time is absolutely due to his team more than his talent. It goes the other way, too. Roberto Luongo faced the most shots in NHL history in 03-04, had a fantastic save percentage, but only 25 wins because the Panthers sucks. My reasoning says Lu ate a lot of rubber and stopped most of it, but because his team couldn't score, they didn't win. Wins are a team stat, but goalies are the only member of the team measured in wins, therefore it's integral to their evaluation. Thanks for watching.

I might not not agree with some of your choices, but it's an interesting video. I lIke that you picked goalies that spent some time with the team.You're pretty biased against the older guys like Esposito, Liut & Smith (4 Cups, Conn Smythe, Vezina, 1st team all-star, all-star game, Led the league in Wins, Played for Team Canada @ Canada Cup). Here's where I differed. Bos: Thomas> Rask. Thomas won the cup/Conn Smythe, Rask didn't play. Dal: Close one, but I'd take Belfour Edm: Fuhr > Ranford. Not even close Fla: Close one, but Beezer>Luongo (remember that Cup run?) Mon: Dryden>Roy More Cups, more Awards, etc Pitt: Another close on, but Barrasso got 2nd team AS & led league in wins, Fleury didn't. TO: Potvin>Joesph (close) Wsh: After last season, would put Holtby over Kolzig.

I struggled with some of those picks, too, Brad. It's not an easy task and I appreciate you supplying your opinion without lambasting me (haha). I chose those goalies based on two things: individual and team success, with a greater emphasis on individual success. This is why I picked Rask, Ranford, Turco, Lu, Cujo and Kolzig. Their individual numbers were better than Thomas, Fuhr, Belfour, Beezer, Potvin and Holtby. As I said in the video, I was very surprised to find out how much better Ranford was than Fuhr and Turco was than Belfour. Clearly Fuhr and Belfour played on better teams. I'm not a fan of Ken Dryden the goalie. Ken Dryden the author is very good though. Dryden didn't have a long career and he played for arguably the most dominant team in history. Montreal won 6 Stanley Cups in the 70s and won a combined 461 games with a .647 winning percentage! They were unstoppable and Dryden was not the main reason for that. Roy won two Cups, pretty much on his own in Montreal. Roy is universally considered a top 5 goalie of all time. Dryden is not. Thanks for commenting and watching.

Totally agree that Thomas is better than Rask. I get why you'd pick Rask, and with his numbers and (relative) consistency, it makes sense. But Thomas was a two-time Vezina winner to Rask's one, and a Conn Smythe winner in 2011. And I think Thomas's historic run to the Stanley Cup in 2011 alone makes him better than Rask. A lot of people here are pretty quick to get on Rask, and while I definitely think he's great and could surpass Timmy one day, he just isn't at that level right now, and he doesn't perform in the big spots the way Thomas did.

I'm just not part of the Ken Dryden fan club. I think he was an ok goalie playing on the greatest team ever. The 1970s Montreal Canadiens were unstoppable. Outside of the 1971 playoffs, I really don't think Dryden played a big role in Montreal's success during the decade. But I appreciate your opinion, Wolf Daddy. Thanks for watching.
