@TDC - 08:17 - I DON'T THINK it's someone putting Loctite on the bolts, its a Metalergy thing, Steel vs Aluminium, They DO NOT MIX WELL TOGETHER, Copper Grease HELPS! There is a galvonic reaction between steel and aluminium in that they react (hence why you're seeing a white powder on the threads)...
@TheMasterMiefАй бұрын
Genuinely the best mix between educational and entertaining car content on KZbin. As a German I have a big affection towards doing things "right" (who would have guessed, I know :D), but I try not to be too anal about things. You are people who do things right when it matters (safety relevant components) and are chill enough to do a slight botch when it isn't that serious. I love that. Great content keep it up.

Also getting Bilstein because some guy in storage fucked up part numbers is huge :D. Kudos to that merchant.
@TheMasterMiefАй бұрын
Did I tell you I like to do things right? :D I personally believe this to be a bit of an urban legend, but there have been reports of copper paste leading to corrosion on modern alloy wheels. In Germany most modern shops now use exclusively ceramic paste on any parts in the wheel well. Partly because copper paste could lead to ABS faults, but that of couse would require to really fuck up application, at which point I would probably take the entire wheel assembly off and make sure everything is properly done :D

You're making zero sense. How can you be a traditionalist but like upgrades?? You do know a traditionalist is someone who.... Likes tradition.... Not new or upgraded stuff right? You ain't a traditionalist you're just simple innit
@chrisb9360Ай бұрын
@ Sorry to have confused you. In the Porsche community at least, upgrading performance parts is a traditional thing to do. It’s been a tradition since pretty much day 1. James Dean did this with his 356’s and his 550 from new. Other examples are upgrading to M030 suspension parts which the lowering springs in this video replicate. Similarly, upgrading to a short shift is another performance upgrade. I’ve done similar on my 986 albeit using a 997 part. Upgrading to other Porsche wheels to allow wider rubber is common, even if the ones in this project are replicas. My SC runs 7 & 9” 930 wheels as an example, meaning there’s a wider choice of track tyres available. Even the previous owners ‘Gundo’ hack mimics the factory PSE sound but without the switchable part. Again, apologies if this is too much to take in. Things can be tough sometimes.
@recreationalelmersglue6053Ай бұрын
@@B0TJERRYXsurprised you are on a car channel and haven't heard of it before, it's a really common idea. You modify the car just to enhance the driving experience, not change it. So massive engine swaps, turbo's, extreme suspension, silly camber values etc. That and you tend not to modify it in a way that is aesthetically obvious (think Ricers for the extreme version). There's genres of it too, restomods, period correct modding, OEM+, Even adding a modern stereo technically counts.

It's not locktite. It's galvanic corrosion from the steel bolt through the alloy hub. They all do it.
@JakeGauldАй бұрын
Yup found this out the hard way doing an abs sensor on one of these, totally seized inside the hub.
@adamfry1125Ай бұрын
Exactly what I was about to say! If Locktite was the issue why did the nut come off ok?! Locktite wouldn't hold the plain portion of the bolt in.... corrosion would.
@TheFleetflyerАй бұрын
100% this. That galvanic corrosion on that nut meant that the strut needed to come out of my 996 and be beaten with a sledge hammer, fire applied, and drilled out. It took several days. Edwin got off very lightly indeed.

Grease on the mating face of the wheels is a massive no no if you're ever going to do any spirited/track driving. The grease can boil from the heat and then stretch the wheel bolts slightly making them come loose over time with heating and cooling. Also, reducing the friction between the mounting faces can mean that the wheel bolts now encounter centrifugal shear forces from the weight of the wheel instead of just holding the wheel to the hub.

Dont put grease or anything between the mating surfaces (Disk and Wheel), its a friction fitting. Thats why the brake rotors are not smooth. If you put grease on it, there will be to much Torque on the Bolts. There is a special tool to clean the mating surfaces (the hub) to make it super clean. Grease only in the very middle (outsticking part) And yes, all of you do it - and never happend something. But it doesent mean that it is right to do.

You guys may already know this, but for anyone that doesn't: be very careful about heating knuckles/hubs when they contain struts/shocks, and ball joints. Working in a very rust-prone area, torches are mandatory tools. I've had both explode with far less heat than you'd think it would take. The struts are kinda self-explanatory- they're pressurized. Ball joints are a little less obvious. ANY moisture in the ball joint socket can and will expand. Given that expansion has no place to go, eventually it will rocket the joint out at a ludicrous speed. There is a 3/4" deep chip in the concrete floor of a garage I used to work for that serves as a good reminder. I got extremely lucky and moved my head from directly underneath that ball joint about 1.5 seconds before it exploded. My left ear took 3 days to recover from the noise.
