I'm here for the eventual 2017 coast to coast run. Model 3 was designed to do that. For 4 or 5 occupants and eventually no steering wheel. They removed the good bit we love having with a steering wheel: the stalks, instrument cluster, HUD, but not the wheel itself. Well, some cars came with non-optional yoke that was even worse for doing what a wheel is for: turning.

If I'm going to own something, I want a steering wheel, etc. Here in Canada, there are still going to be winter mornings when the snow covers all the road markings and even hides the edge of the tarmac. I think there will still be road or weather conditions where FSD will be forced to give up and refuse to work. Here's another: the BIG flood is coming, the road is covered with opaque brownish water, 8" deep. Am I going to drive through it, to get out of the flood zone? Yes. Will a fully-autonomous CyberCab drive through it? So far, I think the answer is NO.

Liability liability liability.... Its assumed software can be more efficient than humans. however, software is written by humans. There will be errors as there are an infinite number of situations and combintions in real world driving. Who is held responsible when these start getting into accidents. The passenger, the owner, the manufacturer? What about when a malicious actor hacks it and runs all them at top speed into each other or walls. Don't tell me its impossible. Every supposedly secure computer network has been hacked at some point. It is possible technology will catch up. But how many issues will happen or how many injuries or worse will it take to get there? Humans make mistakes for sure. But again we hold humans liable. Do we hold Elon responsible when these things kill people?
@DIrvine1014 сағат бұрын
Yes, you would hold Tesla responsible for the error. I'm friends with someone high up in a car insurance firm and they were having serious discussions 4-5 years ago about how you'd insure a self driving and concluded that (for example) a Tesla self driving car crashed into a Google self driving car they'd just sue each other, and likely have an agreed liability split between them (which is common amongst insurance firms already) so there'd be almost no need for 90% of car insurance companies. The company is pivoting into other vehicle insurance (bike, e-bike etc.) and other types of insurance so whenever this shift happened (they guessed about 15 years 5 years ago) it wouldn't be catastrophic for them.
