What we need is a 50 to 70 k resto mod produced at a reasonable scale and alternative to a new car
@OhMyLaurensКүн бұрын
Would need to be something manufactured in very VERY large quantities and with significant give-ins when it comes to quality and hardly any handwork. Renault 17 comes to mind, though it would of course have an interior more similar though different to the rest of the lineup. R&D + production costs would otherwise make it inaccessible.

If i gave 50-70k euro to a local talented shop they would make something glorious, as long as its not a rust bucket.
@oskar6661Күн бұрын
The problem is...why? Why would a company bother doing that to make a scant amount of profit? The trick here is to make something 'bespoke' that you can charge an arm and a leg for...so that some rich person gets something that makes them feel special. Even Singers have increased in price by around 10 fold in the past 10 years. As they mentioned in the video...that one company charged from 450...up to 800K based solely on market pressure. Most of these resto-mod companies make obscene money on their cars. I don't think the market exists for a company making 50K restomods.
@ShaiyanHossainКүн бұрын
i mean a clean classic car goes for that in many cases, why would you need a "restomod"
@TKOIIIКүн бұрын
The problem is that when you're building low volume cars, there's no economies of scale, so the cost to develop a 500k restomod like the Kimera would be roughly the same, or only slightly more, than the cost to develop a 50k restomod. This means that they'd have to sell like 10x as many or more to reach the same profitability. More critically though, the lack of economies of scale means its harder to offset fixed production costs, such as the cost to make molds, which large automakers can spread across millions of cars, making the price of the mold per use far lower. And molds are only one of many production costs that can be prohibitively expensive for low volume automakers. Some companies do manage it though. For instance, you can buy a kit from Factory Five for as low as $15,000. You just have to build it yourself (or buy a used already built one).

Companies that do Restomods often such as Frontline developments also offer good value kits for various changes to your classic. My MGB Roadster is far from these restomods, but it is a cheap exceptionally fun driving car that after modifying the original B series engine somewhat can easily hassle moderns on a country road. I love it.

The older I get the more I start to realize is that for guys like me, these kinds of cars are pretty much a pipe dream. At least, almost. Because Restomods aren’t just something a manufacturer makes (no matter how big or small). It’s the process of bringing a car back, as in the restoring part of it, and then making it better. Of course better is subjective to the builder/owner so that leaves lots of room for different kinds of restomods. Including those with a fit and finish that fells like a factory car, like those featured in the video. Overall, I quite liked this approach for the video. I hope we can see some more like this :) good job guys

The fact they are all manuals ( except the Totem) is great as it is what enthusiasts want (manufacturers these days don’t realise -or care- that we want manuals). The trouble is the cost. I realise it costs more for bespoke low numbers development, but it is out of reach for most people. Will even those who can afford them drive them like they should? I doubt it. More garage queens… If you had that sort of money, albeit they are totally different concept to these restomods, there are a raft of supercars that are a fraction of the price to consider too…

It's where the final scenes of The Italian Job was filmed. When the coach teetered on the cliff edge. I visited there in 2019.

If two cars out of four are Lancia, I think Stellantis should have to put a bigger effort to revive this glorious brand. Because it's not just about Delta or 037, don't forget the marvellous Stratos, a masterpiece.

Last week it was supercars galore on Top Gear, yesterday it was hypercars. Today we have arrived to restomods and tomorrow we will see Top Gear cover one-off customs that even millionaires can't afford. What kind of unicorns will we see next week?

Yup lol, if it was Harris I would've actually watched and not go to the comments while the video is on pause.

I'd grab the petrol Totem! The bespokeness of that project impresses. My own build of choice would be a Jag XJ coupe with the V12 (supercharged), 6 speed manual and truckloads of improvements and bespoke details... Would probably be a bargain compared to these. And even more unique 😉

Such a bummer that the E30 Restomod by Reflux wasn't here. Would have really liked to see this compared to the others here.

The Totem GTA has just stepped too far from the original Alfa aesthetic, if anything it looks more like a modern Mazda😵💫 By contrast the Alfaholics version is sublime❤️

Resto mods have been a thing in the US domestic scene for DECADES. Just as much work goes into some of those as these European ones. It's been part of the hot rodding scene since day one. Also: the 037 is a CARBON TUB. It's worth every penny.

I'll keep my standard Integrale and take the Kimera. I've always experienced loosening gear linkages in all Integrales that are driven hard and long. All Deltas for that matter.

Not a fan of the Delta, something just doesn't look "right" about it and of the 4 its the only one I've actually driven, a real, rally prepped HF Integrale. The other 3 look stunning

This RestoMod scene vaguely reminds me of ProTouring 20 years ago. Garagistas thinking they’re being classy but really just adding ketchup to caviar.
