2023 Corvette Z06 vs Ferrari 458 vs Porsche GT3 | Top Gear

The ‘Z06’. If the Corvette is America’s Porsche 911, this is its GT3. And in American sports car folklore there is no bigger deal. But for Chevy’s latest it’s bucked the trend; no electric assistance, no hybrid help, and no turbos either. It’s got an entirely new engine, the LT6 - a 5.5-litre dry sump, flat-plane crank V8 taken from the C8R GTLM race car. Good for 670bhp and 459lb ft, it sees off 0-60mph in 2.7secs. It also sounds more Italian than American, like the great engine from a Ferrari 458. So we thought we’d bring one of those along. And Porsche’s GT3, because we’re thorough. But could this be America’s best sports car ever? Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Marriage hit the road and track to find out.

The absurd bias against American cars is why I quit watching Top Gear. Like with the GT3. “Omg look at how much room the front ‘boot’ has!” Then proceeds to show a compartment the size of a literal glove box. The Corvettes trunk is big enough to fit the entire roof in it, plus luggage and it doesn’t even get mentioned.

I love LOVE the new corvette, it looks like a legit super car. I also very naively thought that the europeans would finally give it some kudos. I don’t care how good the new “Corvette” is in comparison to some icons as far as handling, numbers, etc. I’ve never been a huge fan of Corvettes, as they’ve always seemed to be owned by and deliberately designed to satiate the guys who NEEDED more attention, meanwhile most of America looks and yawns at Corvettes. Excepting of course the 1965-1967 Big block version. Sexy no matter how you slice it, yet understated and masculine, the one where “taste” was still thrown around during the design process. Beige and after it has always seemed to be in the same level of crassness that the word vulgar meant at the same time. Yes, I could call the 1st gen Corvettes vulgar, when viewed from the time when Lucy and Desi couldn’t even be DEPICTED as sharing a bed on TV even though they portrayed a married couple. Bonkers. What next, a blow job in the Oval Office? If that happens we will have overstayed our welcome as leaders of the free world. What? Seriously? No way in hell. Total bullshit, never happened. Is is what is is definition is what is is? Great. But the new one even went into the last stall at the last dive at the last hour to dig out the last whore passed out but verbally requesting intimacy. It has a REAR ENGINE! It’s NOT a real Corvette. Call it whatever. What next, a scaled up version of what RC cars have been doing for years, give it a LiPo battery for juice and a ridiculously over powered motor to blast it into hyper speed, even ludicrous speed? That too huh? This car represents corporate America’s desperate and misguided assertion of the answer no one asked. What will it take to beat the iconic super cars of the modern era? Who asked them that? Crickets. Yeah, and while you’re at it, aim for the sky, the future, the ragged edge, a flat plane crank, make it look like a JCWhitney “Ferrari”, and from the rear give it a sad kick in the ass where the impact shape sticks. And make claims of firsts ten years after the icons of ten years ago mastered long before. Set the benchmark by someone ELSE’S accomplishments. Claim relevance by the numbers achieved. Sit quietly on your velour throne, with three round taillights, to really bring tradition and progression into full circle, like round twilights. Oh. Damn. So sad. In the mid 1960’s, do you think Chevy really gave a shit about the numbers produced by Ferrari or Maserati or Porsche? Do you think they cared about where the engine was? They made the Corvair for goodness sake, been there, done that, overachieved, and never got the credit deserved. They took the once piddly toy meant to keep deep pockets stateside, and threw that for,HOA out with the shitty kitty litter and made a monster at odds with their own corporate rules. That was a sports car, and a monstrous one at that, with the Cobra and Miura the only things to compete yet a fraction of their cost, and surely more reliable than either. The 458 was love at first sight back then, along with the 308, and besides those modern Ferraris, I’ve thought they were designed with the vulgarity of Countach as the baseline. Enzo, Testarossa, F40, like top notch combovers on older men that actually got what they want, yet still desperate. Porsche. Eh. Never gave a crap except for the 928, muscular and sexy, and of course the Panamera has been a running joke for more than a decade, until……….the Tourismo version. I always need resuscitation after seeing one of those. Painfully beautiful. But I have a thing for wagons, so there. What the hell do I know? Too much, apparently.

True car people know modern Porsches and old Ferraris are great, and Z06 joins those tanks because it now has a high revving mid engine V8. Also, it’s the most powerful production NA v8 ever. Modern Ferrari is dead. Just hybrid computers.

@@zsohaihfaosav No it's not, the standard Z06 competes more with the 911 classic sport or 911 GT3 Touring. The z06 z07 competes with the GT3 and the ZR1 competes with the top of the 9/11 stack (Turbo/S and GT 3RS). I'm expecting the ZR1 to beat or tie the 911 Turbo, with the Zora probably beating the Turbo S. 850bhp in the ZR1 and close to or over 1000 in the Zora, the Zora will be chomping at the heals of top tier hypercars with 1000bhp and somehow under 250k (before options). The Zora's powertrain will be comparable to a McLaren P1, Laferrari, Porsche 918, etc. with a modern infotainment system. Wild stuff coming out of the USA, FINALLY! The USA also holds the Guinness book of world record top speed for a stock road legal car.

​@@dan3162 in order to get people to sign off on giving you a car you need to create a test at the manufacturers will all approve. If you give a review or your car to review against manufacturers car and the reviewers says that they manufacturers car is better that just screwed you. And even worse, it might be because of something to do with the reviewer and not you so it's better for you to make sure that there's clear delineation between your product and the competitor's product that way it's more of a product showcase and you don't get screwed in some weird dumb way. Take a test track like vir that car and driver does, the manufacturers have to send people along with the cars to make sure the car performs at its best because they don't want a user watching the review and getting a bad impression. The only way you're going to get unbiased opinions is when actual owners get together.

GM today is run by Engineers. For example Mary Barra (CEO) and Mark Reuss ( President) are both engineers and Reuss is huge car enthusiast. GM has some of the best chassis engineers in the business today and the LT6 will go down as one of the greatest engines every to come out of any manufacturer. Bravo to GM for making the Corvette a world class sports car. Cheers!!!

as many others have said the z07 would have been a much better comparison with the porsche because it is the hard core variant, and would also show better steering feedback on track due to it being lighter with carbon brakes and wheels, shedding unsprung weight at each corner. You also brought a convertible not the coupe. The C8 Z06 compares very favourably in price to what you get also, especially with that NA engine.

Corvette z06 has the most powerful naturally aspirated v8 ever created and sold by a factory, also at a 3rd of the price of a porche or Ferrari and the lack of need for a million in liquid assets, no Ferrari competes. Porche cuts corners in simple stuff like the gas cap, which is literally better built in the chevy spark. I know the UK doesn't want to admit that the USA has surpassed all of Europe, but your pride doesn't matter, because facts don't care about feelings.

I've owned two Corvettes, unlike 99.9% of the Corvette fanboys on here and who cares. Everyone knows the Corvette is much much cheaper - it gets old saying it over and over again. Also, with the way the Eurotrash tax things, who even knows if it's all that cheaper. And in any case, this isn't a $50k Corvette, you're well above $100k, and people spending that on a car aren't pinching pennies.

Although Ollie mentioned it at the end, it's worth reiterating that he's probably comparing the lightest GT3 (manual with ceramic brakes) to the heaviest Z06 (feature rich convertible w/o any weight savings). The difference is ~400 lbs even in the best case scenario, this is quite the opposite. What went unmentioned--noted by many in the comments--is the price difference. If GR86/BRZ is making sports car affordable, Z06 is (somewhat) democratizing super-car. $110k is no pocket change but it can get you in a base Z06, which is probably good enough for most. Even a fully loaded one (3LZ, Z07, ceramic brakes, carbon wheels...) costs $157k, ~$15k less than the price of entry for a GT3. And the 458 is... best left undiscussed. Z06 needs no qualifier, but the value proposition certainly makes it all the more remarkable.

For the money, living in US it’s no competition which car is best value and it’s the Chevy. We should be proud of the car, it’s the best car Chevy has built in 50 maybe 60 years. If you got the money, spend it at home.

Boy, can you say this was stacked in the GT3's favor? They pick one of the lightest versions of the 911 and put it up against the heaviest version of the Z06. Well, the Z06 convertible is only about 100 lbs. heavier than the coupe. The Z06 should have been spec'd with the Z07 package with the carbon fiber wheels. I wonder how a C6 Z06 would do against the GT3? On paper they are very similar. As much as I like the Corvette, and I really do like the Z06, I would say it probably lacks the refinement that the 458 and GT3 have. Both of the European brands' livelihood depends on each and every model they make. Their focus is on performance with every decision they make. That's not saying that the Corvette isn't a great car because it is. Team Corvette also takes racing very seriously (they've won a lot of races). I just think they have a slightly different approach to performance. It's more brute force where it's more finesse with the Europeans.

Don't forget, this is a "convertible" Z06 going up against the best/fastest GT3 ever produced. Not sure why Top Gear with its supreme budget couldn't get their hands on a proper coupe Z06 with the Z07 package for a comparison. I don't care what anyone says, for an all-around daily driver PLUS hotrod/racer/track car, I will take a naturally aspirated V8 over forced induction any day of the week. First off, ya don't have the over-heating problems when racing, like ya do with forced induction engines. Secondly, because of that, a NA engine gives you much more consistent performance, it doesn't "fade away" over the course of a racing event. Lastly: A well built naturally aspirated V8 with it's pure, unadulterated exhaust note, sounds FAR better than the whine of a super charger and/or the hiss & spit of a turbo. It also takes far more knowledge, skill, and talent to build a powerful naturally aspirated engine, because you can slap a turbo on just about anything & make it go faster. I say the engineers at Chevy definitely knew what the hell they were doing when they chose to go with a naturally aspirated engine for the new Z06.

The Z06 is some $70,000 cheaper, not taking into account dealer markups. Also the Z06 is attainable for the regular bloke, as long as you have the means and you don't mind waiting for one, whereas you can't get a GT3 unless you are offered one by Porsche. Is the Porsche actually $70,000 better? No, it's not - you are paying that because it is ultra exclusive. On the other hand, the GT3 is probably a better investment long term, if that's what you are after in a sports car.

It's not for corporate executives with gobs of money, it's meant to be driven by motoring enthusiasts who are on a budget. Yeah it's not going to be the most luxurious, but it's going to be luxurious enough for the average person to think that it is some exotic car. And unlike the more expensive foreign cars, it's not going to cost an arm and a leg to maintain it. That's really where the Corvette beats out it's competition. Mega points missed by this tiringly hand-waving "review": Not taking into account either car's market value at the moment, the Z06 is less than 2/3rds the cost of the GT3 ($105 vs $170), and that's not including how much more quickly the options add up on the GT3. And while they both have space for stuff, there are two actual trunks in the Z06, the ride is better and - even with all that tech and engineering - it can be serviced at about any of the 2900 Chevy dealers in the US. And, regarding that undeniable masterpiece the 458 is, you'll need as much as $280K for one, not to mention a whack of cash in your account for those jaw-dropping regular maintenance items. And that engine was also devised those several years ago under regulations that are quite different than they are today, which makes the GT3's and Z06's engines that much more incredible (and they will both NO DOUBT last longer!). They are all stupendous, but two of them would not only require much more from their owners, but they would easily not be able to drive them nearly as often. And next time, get someone else to assess cars of this type.

Two fairly major nits to pick. First this is a non-Z07 convertible Z06, undeniably the heaviest and least dynamically capable Z06 (relatively speaking of course). Meanwhile, you've selected the lightest and most hardcore GT3. So you've hobbled the Z06 and then complain about its weight and say you prefer the GT3 on track. Not exactly fair but maybe it's what was available... Secondly, the 458 was ridiculously expensive (and remains so today), and is relatively fragile, far more expensive to maintain and far less practical day to day (zero storage) compared to the Z06. The Z06 is appealing to a different market. None of that was mentioned (or mentioned extremely briefly in passing) and these are not minor points. By Chevy's own admission, they're trying to emulate Ferrari and Porsche for less money. If you had the money though...why settle for a knock-off when you could have the real deal. It's got nothing to do with stats either. Even if the Corvette was quicker around a track very few car enthusiasts would pick it if they had the money to buy a Ferrari. Performance-wise, the Corvette Z variants have been right up there with the "more expensive" exotics and in the upper echelons of performance for several generations now. See: C4 ZR1, C5 Z06, C6 Z06, C6 ZR1, etc. etc. Go check out the lap times of these cars compared to Ferraris of the same era. eg. The C5 Z06 Corvette had one of the fastest Nürburgring times and lap times of any production car at the time. "When the C5 Corvette Z06 clocked its 7:56 time, it was a pretty big deal. GM claimed it was the first production car to break past the eight-minute mark."

As a C8 Z06 owner, I disagree that the seat in the Z06 is high - it's definitely not, it's just where it should be, and it's very comfortable. I'm 6'1" and 220 lbs, and I did 500 miles from Alabama to Florida my first day in the Z06 with comfort. it has impressed the sh*t out of me in every way. The sound and engine are incredible, it's practical, it has great tech, and feels like a proper supercar. It's a modern 458.

omg... biased is one thing, clueless on how to set up for track is embarrassing for him. And he pick a non Z07, convertible, no CF wheels and no Ceramic brakes and street tires. Well I guess you pick and choose and get the answer he wanted? Z07 HAS more downforce than GT3, but less than the 400k GT3 RS. A Z07 coupe with ceramic brakes, CF wheels is way less than similar equipped GT3 @ MSRP (not that any of the two is available @ MSRP). Here is a hint on setup: Touring can be adjusted to liking and I way more comfortable than GT3 for road trips. Then forget weather mode and Sport mode. Go to track , select PTM and based on your skill select Sport1, Sport 2 Track1 or Track 2.. On VIR it anhliiates 992 GT3 and also is faster than GT4 RS.. So in a Chevy you can tune it back to a comfortable cruiser, oh btw. option for competition seats and it's still 14 way adjustable comfortable. AND you beat it on track ? 1/4 mile not even funny for the 992. Full weight GT3 is over 3300 and Z07 with ceramic brakes and CF wheel 3660... Thats not 1/4 of a ton, thats 163 kg... besides that , a very entertaining TopGear with little to no objectivity :-)

It's strange seeing him complain about the height of the driving position in the Corvette as he doesn't look to be any higher than the other two, guess it just feels higher somehow... Also, probably an unpopular opinion but I don't find the 458 to be particularly good-looking at all, although I'm not a fan of the looks of a lot of Ferraris that many seem to like the looks of.

The fact that they have to review cars x2-4 times the price of the corvette should tell you what you need to know. The standard European response, “oh look at out million dollar car, it’s so much better than that American car! Obviously we are the best!!” What a joke. Show me the comparison between a European car at the same price point, oh and do it for what they cost in Europe with their 20%+ taxes. It would be a comparison between a base level Audi A4 to the corvette.

What everyone seems to forget is how much less expensive the Corvette is than its competition. A further testament to what Chevy has done with the Z06. Now, what European sports car can be compared with the base C8 at $65k?? The 'vette is a car any hard working man can afford.

The C8 Z06 is a glorious car, but let’s not forget it was the C6 Z06 that first took the fight straight to Porsche’s 911 GT3. The C7 had a wobble in this respect, but I see this as a continuation of a stellar Corvette Z06 lineage. I’m biased owning a C6 Z06, but with a (modified) 650hp naturally aspirated engine, manual transmission and approx. 1350kg kerb weight, I utterly adore it…

You mentioned, but didn't expand on, the reason why the Z06 rides so well compared to the Ferrari or GT3: American highways are concrete. They eat Ferraris and Porsches for lunch and spit them out with flat tires and broke wheels and suspensions. As a result, European sports cars are usually SUPREMELY uncomfortable on road trips. The C8, on the other hand, could easily take "bumpy" B roads and country lanes in Europe when it was tested there because compared to the buttery smooth roads that those cars are usually tested on, it ALSO has to be extremely good at taking broken, ice-shattered pavement that has more potholes and cracks than actual asphalt lol. The most extreme track car GM made before this, the ZL1 1LE, was VERY stiffly damped. The Z06 ironically has to be MORE rounded because its demographic appeal is a lot wider.

As someone who has taken his 458, 488, F8 and Pista on many roadtrips, it is very clear that you don't have the faintest clue. Yes US roads are utter crap, but you can't expect the rest of the western world to want cars designed for development countries. As for the Z06? Did you see Rob Ferettis video on the wheel issues? Newsflash. Do you think a Z07 with CF wheels or just the low profile fronts of the Z06 will fair any better than those on an F8 for example? Okay. Glad we cleared that up.

This cracks me up - the c8 has nothing in common with the Ferrari - it is a completely different design, it’s on LT engine, completely different chasses , different suspension setup, completely did trans and dual clutch system . Just because GM put a mid engine haters in Europe claim it’s trying to copy a European car. It’s a shame cause the viper and corvette never get the props they ever deserve due to ignorance

Are you intentionally trying to make the Z06 look bad in this comparison test? The most competitive spec would have been the C8 Z06 Coupe with the Z07 pkg. You definitely handicapped the Z06's showing as a result of using the base Z06.
