Each winter the world’s most famous mountain pass - the Stelvio - is closed. Someone has to be the one to open it for summer then, and this year that task was handed to Top Gear. Naturally, we brought along the perfect car for the job - Lamborghini’s reborn Countach LPI 800-4. A carbon-tubbed, loud-piped 4WD extrovert capable of 0-62mph in 2.8secs, 124mph in 8.6secs and 221mph flat out. Those numbers seem familiar, you say? That's because, underneath the retro styling, the Countach is almost identical to the Sian, the first production Lamborghini to receive electrification with an equally bonkers price tag.
Is the LPI 800-4 a worthy tribute to the wedgey seventies icon? We sent Top Gear Magazine's Ollie Marriage to find out.

13 year old me loves this car. 46 year old me is older and cynical and thinks, "great, they made a countach-like body kit for a Sian and it's €2M" It's fine, but it relies REALLY heavily on rich people's nostalgia. More power to them. I don't hate it. I'll just call it an underachievement of expectations. That said, The Stelvio looks like it would be labored with a car like this. It wants a GR Yaris or a Golf R at most.

I’m very much in agreement with you. Growing up, the Countach was my absolute favorite - Super expensive, but not so over-the-top outrageous and to know you’ll never, EVER see one driving down the road. Limited to only 112 cars and priced well over $2,000,000 has made this car a huge disappointment for me. I had really hoped they would have saved a design like this to use on the next-gen Lambo when resurrecting the Countach name.

No the car is not worth 2 million because it looks crazy, it’s only worth that much because it’a a limited run model. They even could have put a manual in it and I would kinda understand the 2 million it costs. Obviously I’m not the target audience for this car, they know the super rich don’t care about driving experience or classic looks. It’s all about fake scarcity and over the top design elements.

Agreed and when he said "this isn't about the car it's about having Stelvio Pass, all to yourself" i rolled my eyes so hard. Is this a car show or...? Additionally the "reborn" Countach is an insult to the Countach. They should've done better by their own freaking legacy, what a half arsed attempt. No protruding intake vents behind the driver side door, side intake vents are way TOO large and comically lazy, the fender design is similar, the fat front is similar but it's clearly a slightly changed Aventador, as he stated in the video. The rear of it is the biggest travesty. They should've waited, they have poor timing as well.

Being lucky enough to drive and ride the Stelvio many times, one of the most amazing, beautiful roads in the world, but especially the east side, not a great driving road... But what an epic experience to drive that road in that car when it's closed, you couldn't do much better than that.

I've been a lifelong Lamborghini fan and I must say this is a fitting swansong for the Aventador/Sian that it's based upon. I adore Countach 2.0. For me, the design is spot on. There is enough resemblance to tie it to the original, a few "family" touches that tie it to the modern brand and just enough original lines that make it a stand alone model. The one piece of design I find especially pleasing to the eye are the wheel arches (front and rear) with the trademark Gandini angles and slashes, also the heavily truncated rear end. The only thing that's missing is pop up headlights a la original but I understand that's due to regulation constraints, but the covered lights do a great job of emulating the Countach face. The only thing I struggled with design wise was the caricature NACA ducts on the flank, but I'm coming to terms with them. I would like to see one in Walter Wolf red on black with gold wheels and tan interior. That would be mega!!!

@@DoctaM3 tbh this happens when people go from manual to automatic and don't understand that you should forget about your left food. Experienced it twice on the passenger seat. It has been my dream car ever since, only why fiddle with perfection? If it a'int broke do not fix it! Lamborghini take electrification out and put the naturally aspirated V12 back in it. I already own several flashlights why the hell do I want one wrapped in a Countach body?
