There were exotics before the Countach. The Miura comes to mind. But the Countach, as I say, put exotics on the map. When the Countach came along all of a sudden every kid, including myself, had at least one poster of it on their walls. It "mainstreamed" exotic cars. Today it has a mystique for having done so. It has a place in exotic car lovers' hearts no other model can really fill no matter how much more powerful or technologically advanced. It is to exotic cars what the Beatles are to rock and roll music. There were other great rock and roll bands before the Beatles. There have been fantastic bands since (Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones come to mind). But the Beatles will always be the greatest of all time. So too will be the Countach.

THIS was MY STORY!! Much of this Movie was filmed in the Atlanta area...and my younger sister is in several 'crowd shots' -- like at the beginning of the race. She and a friend went down often to the hotel where everyone was staying, and where 'the race' began, and 'hung out' during the day. I would ride down in the early evening to get her home for Family Dinner, in my customized Corvette. One day, I got a chance to chat with Hal Needham for a few minutes...and I told him about a REAL 'event' that happened to ME out in Texas a couple of years ago, and how I had gotten around BEHIND a State Trooper who was after me for speeding..!! It was in the middle of the night, and we had wide open highway. We hit speeds over 120 mph, running redlights and 'flying' thru small towns with 25 mph Speed Limits ... still at 100+ mph!! He was laughing constantly as I told him details of the "chase", and when I pulled up beside the Officer and waved...flipped of my vehicle lights (leaving just a set of aircraft landing lights on the front)...and drove away at over 160mph! Of course, the Movie Edition was 'different' in many ways -- like 2 sexy ladies in a Lambo -- and I never got caught! But when I saw the opening of the Movie I was Flattered that Hal and the writers had used my story in their block-buster hit! I did get invited to the "Wrap Party" where I actually got 'talk time' with many of the Wonderful actors...but did not know about the opening scene until I saw the Movie months later. {Hal had even expressed interest in using my car in some highway scenes in the Movie...but when they came back from California and the 'western phase' they had already reached their 'budget' and I never got into the Movie...

Me too. The same sound is used for the Coyote X in Hardcastle and McCormick and numerous Ferraris that appeared in movies and TV in the 80s. The engine sound is actually recorded from a Ferrari 365 GT4 and the original recordings were probably done by the production studio working on the 1976 film The Gumball Rally. Notice the Countach in #2 sounds completely different and is actually correct for a Countach. Same with Speed Zone and any raw unedited Countach videos you find on youtube. Yes that nice Black Lambo was dubbed with Ferrari sounds in almost all scenes :)

2:14 the original Countach sound. The other is a V12 Ferrari race car, the same used for the Coyote in "Hardcastle & McCormick" TV series.

I have grown with this movie (specially it’s intro) since like nearly 40 years ago. I have this strange abbilitie that cannot watch this intro just once nor twice but multiple times (and the entire movie is really awesome don’t get me wrong) the sound of that car just takes me to a place in heaven I guess. There is a documentary on KZbin exclusively about that specific car and it’s sound is actually REAL! Hope other fans of this do check it out because when a legend is actually real it will demand propper recognition. Have a good one all !

I agree, how it sounds...W/ out running through the right parts of this video, there are two engine sounds...One's the real V -12 and the other is synthesized, cuz it's the EXACT same sound as the cody coyote, on Hardcastle and McCormick...Not sure if you've even seen that show, cuz it was in the 80's ?? It's weird, that they use the synthesized one...Take Care Adrian :):)

@@davidgeerling9871 Good ear! Yes indeed they used a real Countach sound for the scene you mentioned and the "Coyote" sounds for just about everything else in the movie. The engine sounds were actually recorded from a Ferrari 365 GT4 "Daytona" and overdubbed into Cannonball Run, Hardcastle and McCormick, and at least 5 other shows/movies I can think of in the 1980s. They typically dub in this sound for Ferraris that are not the correct model such as 308, Mondial etc. Check out the ep of Riptide where they have the chase with the gold Ferrari 308, and the red Ferrari that "Ferrari Girl" drives in National Lampoons. None of those cars sound like that really. It's like Hollywood decided to use that stock sound library for just about any "exotic" back then and none of us knew better because we hadn't been around the real cars to know. Not only that, but remember those original analog sound recordings were made by professional sound guys with pro mics and good placement. Then the editing was done by pros. So even a Ferrari Daytona doesn't sound like that with just any old recorder/placement and driving style. Find clips of original 365 GT4s where they get the thing wound up in the HIGH RPMS and drive it hard and all the sudden, you'll recognize the sound. :) As best I can tell the original sound recordings were done by the studio that produced The Gumball Rally (1976). Listen to the Ferrari in that one. No question the same sound. In fact, the sound recordings may well be from one of the two Ferraris used in that film as they are 365 GTS4. I love that sound. Since a teen I wondered what car/engine they got it from and it wasn't until recently that I found out.
@davidgeerling98713 жыл бұрын
@@digitalmagicstudios0 Sweet !! I fairly recently watched the gumball rally, and I remember it had the legit V-12 engine, cuz of the sound...I'll check out Y. Tube and C if I can find the cars you mentioned, and listened to 'em...LOVE the LEGIT V-12 sound...That 308 on Nat'l Lampoon was the same car on Magnum P.I...Diff was, the one on Magnum was a GTS, and I think it was a V8 ?? I'm ALMOST positive ?? !! Thanks for the technical stuff, I learned a lot :):)
@digitalmagicstudios03 жыл бұрын
@@davidgeerling9871 Thanks for sharing. The 308GTSi was the "poor man" version and like the one on Magnum. The Ferrari naming convention meant 3.0 Litre 8 Cylinder, hence the 308. The "i" was the cheaper model. So the 328GTS and GTB / GTO were "superior" cars and thus 3.2 Litre :) Later the 512TR meant 5 litre 12 cylinder Testa Rossa and so on... And none of those cars sound like the Red Ferrari in Gumball in real life, even though Hollywood almost always dubbed in the same sounds for all those cars. I used to be into Ferraris and Lamborghinis a long time ago. There are roughly half dozen Ferraris that appeared in TV shows and movies I have found where they dubbed in that same engine track, and none of them were correct for the car, except the Gumball Rally. The funny thing about Cannonball 1 is they dubbed it for a competing brand, LOL. But back then hardly anyone knew. Heck, most people still don't know :) Like you said, I LOVE those tracks they recorded too. That is the sweetest engine sound to me ever, along with the dubbed engine sound in Smokey and the Bandit 1 (the old recordings, not the new ones where they re-dubbed it). As far as other shows that used the same track, there is a car chase in Riptide with a gold Ferrari (308 I believe) and a couple movies and another show but I cannot remember off the top of my head. I haven't dealt with this stuff for years. But if it's important to anyone I can find the names of the other shows. Best way to hear lots of the sound is to watch Hardcastle and McCormick. becuase they drive the car in a lot of various speeds and situations and thus the editors had to use a lot of the recordings to make it sound believable and match up

My introduction to the Countach... And I was about 5 years old! 😆 - I've been in love with Lambos ever since. This opening sequence still reaches my inner five year old. So cool. Fans should check out the Cannonball story by Hagerty (on KZbin) - The black "Cannonball Countach" is heavily featured; it was recently given a ground up restoration. Does my soul good.

Love that sound and awesome black Countach! It took many years wondering about this since a teen, but I finally determined that glorious engine sound is taken from a Ferrari 365 GT4, which is a 4.4 liter 12 cylinder 6 carb engine. I knew it wasn't a Countach because I've heard dozens of Countachs but tracking it down wasn't easy through the decades. The same sound is (first) used in The Gumball Rally (1976) for the Ferrari 365 GTS4 which is probably where the sound recordings first originated and then those recordings were used many times as overdubs in the 80s in TV shows and movies, most noteably perhaps the Coyote in Hardcastle and McCormick, and several Ferraris that appeared in other shows and movies including the Ferrari girl in National Lampoons. Sorry to disapoint the Lamborghini fans, but nearly all those sounds are from an early 70's Ferrari. Ifyou want to hear real Countach sounds then watch Cannonball Run 2 and Speed Zone. Now the question is, do those old stock audio soundtracks still exist somewhere in Hollywood? Would love to get hold of those recordings. If you want to hear much more of the engine at various RPMs/idle/echo/rev/downshift/double clutch etc watch the TV show Hardcastle and McCormick. They did a good job dubbing in all the sounds in a believable way as they drive the car in various ways.
@digitalmagicstudios03 жыл бұрын
If you don't believe me, search clips of original Ferrari 365 GT4 "Daytonas." It's not easy to determine because the sound clips used in the TV shows and Movies were recorded by masterful Hollywood production crews with good mics and good mic placement and then the dubbing was done by masterful editors. But if you can find clips where the 365 "Daytona" really starts to wind out, the engine sound changes dramatically at higher RPMs and immediately becomes recognizable as the sound used in the shows. So if you find a clip of a guy creeping along or normal driving then dont' be surprised and argue it's not the right car. Hope that helps anyone else who's been wondering about this since their youth
