I owned a '66 S1800 from 1970-1971 when I got married. It was so, so much fun. Certainly not high powered but due to a broken seat bracket I was basically sitting just off the floor with my legs fully extended [ 6'4"] flying low on Socal freeways and cornering like I was Mario Andretti. Of course it didn't have A.C. so it was warmish in the summer. I'm now in my mid 70s, I'd love to have mine back.

If there was one car I would want to get to my dad to truly own, its this one. I know how much he loved The Saint (watching it way before I was born) as when I was playing Forza Horizon 4 on the big screen in our living room, I unlocked this car from a barn find and my dad absolutely went nuts seeing it telling me the story behind it (which fortunately it was also explained in the game itself). This car truly is special, shows the true spirit of Volvo which even nowadays they make pretty reliable cars (my dad owned bunch of Volvos back in the days) and its quite unfortunate people don't really appreciate the brand that much. Cyan truly did justice to this car.

Our's had a 2.5l engine with a 5-speed box, wide mag wheels, seats with head rests and a few more 'modern features'. I actually wish I could put an electric motor in it. Back then electric motors and batteries weren't as well developed. . We sold ours back then for about $20k which was good money in the day.

In 1979 my father received new orders and we moved to Navy base housing in El Centro California. I was the son of an enlisted man but a shortage of housing led to us being “upgraded” to Officers housing. It was there that at 11yrs old that I fell in love with cars. Three in particular that I will never forget. An off white P1800 like this beauty lived around the corner. An Ascot Fawn E Type Jaguar 2+2 across the street. The sound of that inline 6 being warmed up every morning is burned into my memory. And the 1974 Datsun 260Z that my parents picked up second hand from the dealership where my mother worked part time. The glory days…

Volvo should never have stopped production of the P-1800 they would have been ahead of the design game when that style came back. The new Mercedes two door sedan looks just like the P1800 with out fins. I remember articles about why Volvos were so durable. They practiced excellent metallurgy by hardening the steel first then cutting or working it to specifications. An expensive process no one else practiced. It took twice the tools but far mor stable and accurate steel components. Their transmissions, overdrives and final drives were top shelf.

I think you should have mentioned that "Volvo introduced its final P1800 variant, the 1800ES, in 1972 as a two-door station wagon with a frameless, all-glass tailgate. The ES engine was downgraded to 125 bhp (93 kW) by reducing the compression ratio with a thicker head gasket (engine variant B20F); although maximum power was slightly down the engine was less "peaky" and the car's on-the-road performance was actually improved. The ES's rear backrest folded down to create a long flat loading area. As an alternative to the usual four-speed plus overdrive manual transmission, a Borg-Warner three-speed automatic was available in the 1800ES. With stricter American safety and emissions standards looming for 1974, Volvo did not see fit to spend the considerable amount that would be necessary to redesign the small-volume 1800 ES. Only 8,077 examples of the ES were built in its two model years".
