Video stores and Arcades were paradise to a kid in the 80’s and 90’s. It was a great time to be alive

I also worked at a video store at one time and it was Blockbuster Video. It was a lot of fun and a great atmosphere. Streaming is ok but cruising down an isle, picking up the films and holding them in your hands was just an experience. The atmosphere was just so positive and fun and the people were generally in great moods that bled over to everyone. Too freaking bad that they are almost all gone now...GREAT VIDEO.

I miss video stores. I will always have the memories of going to these mythical type stores filled with all these random movies I've never seen before. I wasn't lucky enough to be there for the 80s and 90s greatness, but I did enjoy the 2000s a lot with stores like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. I loved the last decade of these stores. Great years.

I definitely lived during the 90's greatness of video stores; it was like a kid in a candy store. The VHS era was way better than the DVD era of video stores.

Literally everything was better before streaming and social media. Quality mattered more, going to buy a new record on CD, Cassette or Vinyl is an experience in itself. When you buy a film on Blu Ray, it's yours, you have it, you own it. People weren't living their life looking at a phone screen 60% of their day. Most can't see how chained they are to it and how it's basically a form of slavery.

People still acted like people back in the day. Now everyone acts like social inept parrots. Social skills have gone out the window and it seems like being negative and angry is the new normal. Sad state of the world if you ask me.

Video Hut was my local Video Spot in Los Angeles. They knew me and my dad by name, they saved the new releases for my dad and I. Whenever i walked in to rent a game they would show me their new releases and would offer to call me when the game was ready to rent. I miss that Video store so much.

I miss video stores! I remember when I was little, there was a Family Video up north and it was the only video rental place up there and we'd rent tons of movies. Sadly, it closed down last year. Even down south, we had a Movie Gallery video store not far from my house and that place was so small but so cool. Sadly, it's closed down and abandoned. Blockbuster, Family Video, Movie Gallery, I miss them all!

As a kid this was my reward for being good and getting good grades. On the weekend I was allowed to rent a few movies or games every weekend as long as I was good that week. It was also my punishment. If I had a bad week, no movies or games that weekend.

One of the FIRST memories I have is going to a "Video Town" with my Mom and seeing the boxes for Halloween 5 on the shelf and wondering which one we were going to get: "The vhs or the betamax" because they had both versions and we had both kinds of vcr's at home-I think that's why I STILL love Halloween 5 despite EVERYONE seeming to HATE it now- it's literally one of the FIRST movies I remember watching- Is it GOOFY, over-the-top and does it make little to NO SENSE-YES-and I still love every moment of it! 📼 🎃

I miss BlockBuster. I miss the human interaction of it the physical aspect of it. I feel like these days we're moving to a more artificial less human-esk environment where we're out of touch with our humanity. Granted I wasn't that social to begin with and hated crowds but I digress. It was exciting to see physical locations being there.

I remember going to one called Video Kraze 2 (God knows what was part 1) and some Indian bloke ran it who would let me hire out anything. I was maybe 7 years old when I first went there. Lots of weird horror movies in there with all the original hand-painted covers. Everything had a musky smell of smoke and carpet cleaner. I even remember the cardboard cut-outs of films like The Fly and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

The video store we had in my home town is still vacant. And the crazy part is the Movie Gallery wasn’t in some random isolated area. It was a huge store within a shopping center, and while that shopping center is continuing to thrive. That giant store area is still vacant 12 years later. Maybe the rent for that particular area is too high but it’s kinda odd seeing a store empty for that long in such a busy area.

video stores were pretty much paradise on earth... as a kid i could only go w my uncle so it wasn't often but it was always an event, but you had walls to walls all colorful stuff lined up with crazy coverarts , all the jaws or police acacemy movies lined up, my eyes were bulging out as a kid, my favorites were movies like ROBOTJOX or FLASHBACK (dennis hopper) etc etc , i even remember the 1st adult rated movie was oddly enough SPACE MUTINY , which my uncle allowed cause it seemed to be a battlestar galactica (our favorite scifi) ripoff from the coverart

Loved going to the video store growing up. Rented many great movies, more than a few of which I purchased copies of for my personal collection. Regardless of which genre I rented, it was fun to walk down the isles and look at all the different titles each store had. I had both a mom and pop video store and a Movie Gallery in my town, so I rarely had difficulty finding what I was looking for. Plus, I rented many video games during my teenage years and in between working my job and going to college. My dad and I used to do a thing where if my mother and older sister were away for the weekend, we would hit up the video store on Friday night and rent movies from genres we liked (these included action, science fiction, and comedy mostly but occasionally other genres too). I recall seeing the James Bond series during this period of my life amongst many other notable titles.

I even remember the days before having a VCR renting them and vhs tapes together for a weekend with my parents.Renting was a special occasion and made it more special. I remember in the early 80's before VCR's were a standard thing that people owned, most of the video stores rented them out too along with your video rentals. VCR'S were also pretty big and bulky, not as compact as they eventually would become.

I grew up in the 80s and our first vcr was beta , I remember there always being more VHS and it would piss me off cause my fav movies would always be out cause never enough copies of beta , beta were smaller tapes and used more in production studios and were the first into the video rental market along with laser disk, I watched many movies on beta and then finally went to VHS. Once we got to the 90s Blockbuster and it was even more fun almost like a night out, go wallk around grab some junk food and browse the store. I still have DVDs with block buster logos on them from when they sold the DVDs I miss those days .

The all-digital environment we have today is not how humans were meant to live. And certainly the rise of social media has not been positive. People should not be spending half their lives staring at their phones like zombies. I think it's got a lot to do with the collective mental illness gripping society today.

I dont know if it was like this everywhere else but independent video stores weren't very reliable. They would always close down within a few years or less it seems. Im talking about in my area btw. It had nothing to do with Blockbuster putting them out of business because the nearest Blockbuster was a long ways away. Most of my video store memories are from Hollywood Video. That place lasted quite a while.

Streaming is okay until the internet goes out. That’s why I like the physicality of VHS, DVDs, and blue-reys. Because if the internet goes out but the electricity is still working, you still have something to watch. As far as video stores vs. streaming, there’s just something about the experience of going to the video store with your friends or family and running around and seeing all of the movies you can choose from. The excitement has been sacrificed for convenience IMO.

Video stores are better like Netflix puts some stupid cover art for the movies like use the theatrical posters or DVD cover or something. I’d like to read the back as well and check out the pictures as well and see if I’m interested. Too many movies I pass on, on Netflix because the cover just doesn’t interest me. Maybe if they could show the movie cover it would be easier to give other movies a chance
