This is what you do, no matter how small you think you are 110%! I don't know much but I do know if I do all the work myself, I shouldn't really outsource much unless I need too. Hearing it from lawyers and such only concretes the idea. I have technically no, rave scene support as they don't enjoy me speaking up against racism in the music industry, so I have to do everything myself. Being honest in entertainment, is not an easy time, but seems to be worth it in the end.

Just let this sink in: all those shitty deals that record companies made with new artists back in the 70’s and 80’s would be considered GOLD MINE DEALS today. The record companies ripped artists off everywhere they could, yet those bands STILL managed to become very wealthy with their “cut” of record sales. Touring used to be just a means to promote a record. Bands toured so people would go BUY the record….. it’s mind boggling what has happened. The internet has made a new kind of “star” and killed off the old ones.

I understand why so many artists are a mess after they've signed with a record company... because what they ask you to do, you lose all or most of your dignity and self respect... I knocked back a record contract about 21 years ago because of what it was asking of me... and while I don't have the fame or the money (not that the contract guarantees you that anyway), I'm happily content doing what I'm doing, I can look in the mirror and 100% have my integrity intact... it is what it is, and some people have a price, and some people don't...

I'm sure Monster corporations are about to steamroll me but nobody's doing what I'm doing and what I create will never be taken away from me. I need help. I have four artists and it's in four different languages and I barely speak 1.5 of them. This goes further. Most producers and artists focus on their niche. I want to focus on my niche. Every single one of my niches. My niches are every single niche. I'm a lyricist and anything can go anywhere now with AI I am in control of all of my art. I'm watching my algorithmically designed blues songs go into their respective playlists. One set of lyrics. 12 kinds of blues. I don't think I'll do that again cuz that's boring. I want to write for the Mexican cartels and win a Latin Grammy. That is my artistic goal. My business goal is ...I want to make compelling songs and albums in every niche. And I want a team to do it with me. I want 12 people to create 36,000 songs with me.

I'm making my thousand this year. But I should be teaching 12 people to do this and I should be getting my cut and we should be taking over the world. I am the right person to guide it. Because I have higher ideology. I'm not in this for music. My goals are boring. I want food sovereignty for all indigenous people throughout the world. I want the people who feed us to have all the power. None of those people live in the global north. That's why I write songs about Honduras and Punjabi people. They have a common struggle. @WilliamAshleyOnline4 ай бұрын
Just offering a comment on my lay opinion on this. Yeah not legal advice just my lay understanding. A mechanical copy is not ownership of the work. Having a mechanical reproduction recording etc.. is just a mechanical - and would be a legal copy IF you legally acquired it, and if that copy was a legal copy. The right to make "new copies" is a copyright of the person who owns the work. Often mechanical rights these days are assigned to PROs etc.. who collect royalties for mechanicals, not all works are assigned though but it is common practice. Its very likely that if the works were signed CBS artists then those materials are probably owned by Sony Records but each song may have its own copyright context. Mechanical Royalties: The author of a song has the right to be paid every time a copy of that song is made (or “mechanically reproduced” A mechanical license grants the right to reproduce and distribute copyrighted musical compositions for a statutory rate.) The specific number of years after someone passes depends on the jurisdiction 70 years is normal. Meaning if they passed in 1980 then they would would be public domain in 2050. Again Definately consider consulting with an entertainment lawyer for actual legal advice BUT without specific infos just as a lay person I would say 100% No, you can't you need to obtain a mechanical license from whoever owns the copyright to the world as mechanical productions are not ownership of that song only that mechanical copy, and if that copy is not legally acquired or licensed then it can be considered a pirated copy. If you found the paperwork with the recordings it may be clearer how they were made. Its very likely that the master's were copies of contracted materials and those contracts themselves may dictate who owns the masters and how they may be used. Its very possible that if you legally aquired those masters you have physical possession of them but you havn't taken over ownership of any reproduction rights - known as mechanical reproduction rights. Any unauthorized copies would still violate copyright unless the works and their mechanical rights passed into the public domain. Oddly where the song was made under what jurisidction and what jurisidiction the copyright is owned in. In the event that the song creator / owner had no heirs then it would pass into estate management often dictated by civil authorities, if there is no hiers to pass an estate on, it might pass over to the jurisidiction if tha tis written into estate law. I have never heard of government exercising copyright control over materials that they have legal control of. So its not really if they are deceased, it is if everyone with inhertence under the local law is deceased since copyright is an inherited property / asset . I could be wrong talk to a lawyer. Also if someone has more knowledge please do correct me. This is my personal opinion as to how that situation would work. It depends on the jurisdictions involved as copyright law is not universal.

If You're Not Your Own Label Yet, What Are You Even Doing? Enjoy.

Hii! Thank you so much for the info. One quick question, Is it possible to license (sync etc) an instrumental version of a song you've released already somewhere else?
@WilliamAshleyOnline4 ай бұрын
Yeah since she hasn't provided you a reply I thought I would just provide a little info on what I would expect. Again I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice just my interpretation to how it normally works. Depends if you granted exclusive sync rights to that party I would think. If it was a nonexclusive release then you can reassign licensing rights nonexclusively. Not all releases are exclusively assigned. Yeah I think you would need to provide her with specific information about where it was released through what service what the contract terms were ect.. to really answer a question like that. It would be in the contract what assignments there are. The terms of the first release probably have the answer to your question in them.
