Luckenbach, Texas, sometime in the '80s, before it became a Destination. Folks sitting on the 3-step bleachers under the huge oak behind the general store. Folks sitting around a long picnic table. Long neck Lone Stars, and several guitars. Several guys knew Townes Van Zandt, and started playing Pancho & Lefty. Never will forget it.

@norrisbjork1414 Quite possibly, but sad to say, I never caught anyone's full name, except Jim Luckenbach, and I would not have known any of those guys beforehand anyway. It was the first we had heard of Townes Van Zandt. I can pinpoint the time better: We heard Waylon's "Luckenbach Texas" for the first time, being played over and over and over on speakers in a nearby gift shop (which I think became a dance hall). Believe me, we both knew it by heart by the time we left. The last time we returned, it was so crowded and noisy, we had to get out of there before it was ruined for us forever. A place being loved to death.

Been listening to Emmylou Harris since 1975, when her first two albums dropped. I actually knew who she was because she was best friends with Linda Rondstadt & was credited on her albums for vocal harmonies, before her albums hit the scene. I didn’t know about the Gram connection until the early 90’s when the Fallen Angels live tour from 1973 was finally rereleased & of course she always covers one or two Gram songs per album, keeping his music alive for so many decades of young listeners to discover Gram. She put a spotlight on Townes music and carried Grams music all these years. She is a national treasure ❤

I've been a fan of EmmyLou since 1971 when she was an unknown singing at bars in Washington DC. She was living with her parents in Maryland, divorced with 1 child. Then after she hooked up with Gram Parsons her career began to turn. It's a long story, but Parsons was her mentor and passed away in 1973 of a drug overdose. She went solo after that and turned out a great career. Beautiful voice that's one in a million. I sure do love EmmyLou, inside and out. What a voice.

The last time I was in Austin, years ago, it was to attend a funeral. It was a Sunday so I went over to W 29th, Milto's was closed but next door was a bar-b-que place so I went in to eat. I remember being the only customer in the place. Sat down and looked around and across the table was some very old concert posters on the wall near by. Right in the middle of them all was a Townes's show poster from Nov.1978. It was one of those moments in time that can only happen to you in Austin. So much history there, most of it very happy times, great music, great people. When I listen to this song I always think of Townes. I love Emmylou, but this was Townes's song. That world is gone now but to have been there back then was simply the best of times, ever.

@@peterwilliams6114 Gregg and Wickizer's version is good but sterile compared to Emmylou and the Hot Band. Love the great Townes Van Zandt.❤️💙🧡💚💛💜 Update: My husband and I just saw our 1st concert since seeing Rodney, Nov. 19, 2019, on May 11th, 2023, up here in the PNW!!! He was fantastic, his band is so hot, his new album Chicago Sessions is so good, been playing it constantly. Rodney told the story of why he always closes with Pancho and Lefty… several years ago, he was playing in Ireland & he closed w P&L, he and his band didn’t sing the chorus, but the Irish audience did, they knew it by heart, which surprised Rodney and became his talisman.❤

Lefty betrayed pancho to the federalis they paid him he went to cleveland living in crappy hotels but he lived to old age with the guilt of what he did.
@seatosummit61724 жыл бұрын
Yes! Yes! Yes! Was this just a story of two skilled gunfighters on the opposite sides of the law? Or does a deeper listen suggest that maybe Pancho and Lefty were estranged brothers destined for a fatal rivalry? Or perhaps a careful listen could suggest that Pancho actually won the gunfight, buried Lefty, and assumed Lefty's identity to fool the Federales, but finding after everything he could never truly escape his own prison. This ambiguity is one of the reasons I love this song!

Emmylou should have released it as a single back in ´77. When Willie's son's brought him Emmylou's album 'Luxury Liner' in '83 he found the song he was looking for to his duet album with Merle, and 'Pancho & Lefty' finally made it to a #1 single!
@stephengardner776 Жыл бұрын
Even though it was not released as single , and this is the strange part of album making ,executive decisions had to be made as to what they would release as singles . In the mid seventies air time was tight on the radio waves and Emmy was relatively still new at the time just a couple years out nationally but it’s one of those things. But the long and the short of it is the song and and emmylou became the reason for everyone else to record it and one of willie Nelson’s and Merle haggard’s Biggest songs ever! But emmylou’s version is the real deal for simply the level of feeling she displays in the song, truly one of the best!!! ICON

Emmylou Harris in my eyes and ears can never be stopped. I've been listening to her since she began recording. Good ole Alabama gal.

Emmylou Harris had a f*ckin' great band in those days. I love the unpolished rough version of Townes, but hell, this is so perfect!

Right before this band was put together Emmylou was told by record label executives that the only way she would ever get any airplay on the radio would be to put together a really hot band. So she did exactly that. That's why they were "Emmylou Harris and The Hot Band." Even after 40 years later, they sound as great now as they did then!!!

Couldn't agree more. The rif they do between verses is magic.

Emmylou reminds me of my mother. She was her favorite woman singer in the 70's. I sure miss her! 😢😢😢
