Sister Sledge is an American musical vocal group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formed in 1971, the group consisted of sisters Debbie, Joni, Kim and Kathy Sledge. The siblings achieved international success at the height of the disco era. The year 1979 saw the release of their breakthrough album We Are Family, which peaked at number three on the US Album Chart and included the 1979 US top ten singles "He's the Greatest Dancer" and "We Are Family". A third single, "Lost in Music", reached the US top forty. "We Are Family" earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

This song takes me back to my childhood growing up in Nairobi, Kenya. My friend Ben had a brother whose best friend was rich and traveled often to the States and came back with a batch of albums from every trip. This was one of them. We would sit down and "dub" it to a cassette because it was not available anywhere else and we would have to wait 2-3 years before it hit the radio. We were the coolest kids in the neighborhood.

Either Joni or Kim is missing in this video. I know when I met them in Honolulu Debbie was with them but didn't perform as she had a 2 year old and just had a baby boy. Kathy was very nice and personable. They did represent family for sure. Thankful I had the opportunity to meet them and get invited to a birthday party. 1st hotel suite I had ever been in at 16.
