Hello, friends! Welcome back to the “Let’s sew our best fitting woven top” series! This is the very awaited and so necessary episode on full bust adjustments! I know not everyone needs them, but you might do and not know it. You will see a very practical hands on videos today!
I have also sewn an ill fitting top to illustrate how bad a different cup size can fit, even though the circumference is ok. We will be covering lots of cup sizes today.

I took a class in FBA and when the instructor realised I have 6 inches difference between high and full bust and narrow shoulders she more or less ran away and left me wondering what to do. I have watched many videos and made umpteen changes on different patterns and I all but gave up. So wow this video is brilliant. I have a 10” difference from HB and FB, and so even with a FBA I don’t like the look. Darts too big, and the waist ends up way bigger than I need (my waist is 8” smaller than my HB, so I even have to grade my bottom without the FBA) BUT THANK YOU for the quick mention of the Y adjustment at the end. I almost clicked out before you mentioned it, so I hope someone else bigger than an H sees my comment so they can watch to the end! I can’t wait to try it and see if I like it better

I'm new to sewing and today I tried on a muslin of a top that I made. It seemed too tight on the upper chest. My high bust and bust are equal so I'm essentially an A or smaller cup. This video explains why it was tight in that area! I chose the pattern size based on my full bust, but really I should be choosing a slightly larger size and then potentially adjusting to decrease on the full bust. Thank you for clarifying! I am sure I will rewatch this video several times as I get more experienced - there is so much information in it that went over my head :D

Thank you for explaining when to use the Y full bust adjustment. I didn't realize that when I first was learning how to fit my bust, I was using the Y FBA which I didn't need. I fluctuate between a B and C cup. I didn't understand that I was creating extra room on my chest area which I didn't need. I appreciate your detailed, clear and thorough instructions! Now I will review the patterns that I gave up on and see if I can figure out the fit on the bust.

Karina, thank you for this tutorial, Yes it was long, and the repetition was really helpful. I have watch FBA tutorials in the past and effectively (mostly) made them but your explanation and reinforcement helped me understand more about them. I suspect you've helped me solve the ongoing problem of gaping armholes. I think I'm choosing a base size a little too large, and doing too small a FBA. I have a 7" difference between high and full bust and narrow shoulders. I'll try that Y FBA next time.

I have an 8 inch difference between my high bust and my bust so I used the Y instructions. Never have seen this before. Amazing. This made my front waist too large. How to I take some extra fabric out of the front? The back is just fine.

The FBA will always make the waist larger but you can bring the waist in once you have already added space for the bust.

The full bust piece does have a limit though. 4-6” high bust to full bust difference. So there will be people who need an FBA on top of what’s there already.

I just tried my first fba and omg what a difference. You are a great teacher. I learned to sew about a year and a half ago mostly thanks to your how to videos. Thanks for the perfect instructions again! I do have a question. When I pivoted to do the fba, the armsyce had a slight overlap. Did I do something wrong?

You can have the slight overlap in the seam allowance area but it won’t affect anything. The length of the armhole will stay the same.

Imo the solution to a huge, unwieldy bust dart is a) split it into 2-3 parallel darts; or b) shift some of the dart fullness to the shoulder for gathers or pleats or tucks or sbirring. b) would also have the benefit of not distorting the armscye which is always nice. You would be altering the design of the garment, but why not? (I have a 6 " difference between high bust and full bust myself.) I love all your tutorials. ❤

Hi! This was a good lesson, thank you. I'm current doing a dress that has a bust dart but also a waist dart. How should I go about doing the bust adjustment in this situation? Do I first move both the darts in together at the armpit or do I just ignore the waist dart? Or does the waist dart just grow when the piece under the bust dart is moved...?

One question though, how do you know what a specific pattern is drafted for as I can’t find any mention for cup size on the pattern only height.

If it does not say, it’s most likely a B cup because that’s the standard. What brand ?

Hi, I am loving your tutorial and nearly getting the point re increases for cup size. On the Love Notions Aria pattern I am trying to calculate what cup size the full bust version is as I have a 5" difference between by hi bust and full bust. Lets see if I have got this right. XL is a b cup because there is a 2" difference between hi (40)and full bust (42). If I choose to use the full bust this if finished measurements and is 48" a difference of ???? I am confused and really struggling to find out what cup size the full bust is, it does state that this bigger version adds 2" to the waist and hips. I need to know this is to see what further fba is required, as you say work on the pattern that is closest to your size and up the fba if required? Thanks in advance Helen

I have to make another video that will include that. This one was very complete already for a simple style and I didn’t want to overload it with more. Basically, you create your new waist dart by drawing in the old dart legs and finishing the dart the at same height as the original dart, but in the middle of the new opening that the FBA originated.

So I’ve done my bust adjustment from b cup to c cup and now my dart is 5 inches wide at the side seam. I’m using Vogue pattern # 8772. When I drew my line from the bust apex through the center of the dart at the side, the line did not go through the entire center of the dart, maybe that’s why the dart edge is so wide? Have you ever encountered this before? Thank you for your time😊

Yes, you need to lower it, which in essence is shortening it so the tip is at least 1" under the bust height.

The FBA will always change the shape of the armhole but as I said, the stitching line (front armhole length) will be the same and you don't need to do anything with it. It will fit the sleeve just the same.

I’d shorten, then grade, then FBA and last, move the darts.

Karina the pattern I wish to use has an empire line which finishes under the bust there is only one dart upwards from the join line to the skirt. How do I do a FBA on such a short bodice? You do the same thing, the FBA will generate a side bust dart. It will add length and width to the front bodice. You re draw the dart under the bust and adjust the width of the front skirt to match how much extra width was added to the bodice. There’s nothing different. Your bodice will have a side and waist dart

That is not included in this tutorial and it was never intended to because the fitting series is based on a simple top. Not princess seams. I cannot answer your question in a comment here. It’s complex.

Hi Linda. This series is for wovens. These things will not apply in the same way with knits and I’ve mentioned this before. Knits stretch horizontally and vertically. There’s also negative ease. So what I’m doing in this series will not translate at all to knit projects.

I’m sorry. Yes, I knew this was for woven fabric. I guess a better way to ask my question is “how do you measure and adjust a pattern for knits given the variables of stretch and ease?”

It’s a little complex to answer here but a lot Of it is trial and error actually. All the knits will behave differently and an exact same rule won’t apply for all fabrics and all styles. That’s why I always think fitting in wovens is more absolute and easy.

Ok, that makes sense. At least I have learned to be aware of the vertical measurements and that will help me a lot. Like you, I learned to sew on wovens. I’m just starting to sew knits and I’m struggling. But like you always say, it takes practice to improve and gain expertise. Thank you for your encouragement and advice.

Hi Karina, this time I am going to use the Cadence dress pattern and to follow your woven top videos for the SS top. On this pattern the 16 is a 38” upper bust size and the 18 is a 42” upper bust size my upper bust size is 40” what would you recommend in this instance please.

You can cut exactly in between the lines of the pattern and get a size “17”. I’ve done that before :)

Hi Karina, Help! If the pattern is too small in the bust circumferance, AND you need a FBA- which do you do first? Fix the circumference, then do the FBA, or vice versa?

The FBA will add the circumference you need if you do it correctly. You don’t just add circumference on its own. Not unless you want the shoulders to fit well too.

Both. Although you can change the dart point by backing it away but it’s still the same new bust height.

Ease has nothing to do with adjusting for a different cup size. You are working on the original design with its intended ease and adding space for the bust….. not changing the style of the pattern

My high bust is 48in, bust is 53in, and the largest bust size on the pattern is 46 inches. Is it possible for me to do a fba on the pattern or is the difference too large? I’m sewing a dress btw.

I think it’s too much to add. The shoulders on the pattern and the back piece would end up too fitted in my opinion.
