I'm old school. This makes sense, but it is just way too much information for a man like me. Nobody taught me how to pound a nail with a hammer or analyzed my hammer swing. I just did it. I was horrible at first. Without even thinking about it, I was pounding nails like a damn professional carpenter inside 8 hours. It is the same with golf. Do it enough and you will eventually find your own swing that works for you. - Always remember that you are your own best teacher. Nobody but you knows what a good shot or a bad shot feels like except you. Bio-feedback is your friend. . -Always use the same brand or type of ball, ALWAYS!! Different balls react totally different from one another. - Before a round go to the practice green for a few minutes before you go to the range to hit a few. Believe it or not, the putting stroke is a microcosm of your full swing. - Most of all, have fun. Golf is a ton of fun and there is no reason to get angry with yourself. If I sound like an old man it's probably because I am.

At what point do I actually bow the lead hand/wrist to square the club? At the slot or parallel to the ground during down swing or right before the impact position? It looks like Dustin Johnson and some of the pros do it at the top of the back swing. If we take that further, can I start with my lead hand/wrist bowed at the set-up (in other words, start the swing in the "impact position"--hips turned, hands forward/shaft leaning forward, and lead hand/wrist bowed, and club-face square--then swing with the goal of returning to that position)?
@TopSpeedGolf3 жыл бұрын
There's no set time to bow the lead hand/wrist as long as it gets in the correct position at impact. If it works better for you to get there at the top of the backswing, then go with that. I think if you try your second proposal, you'll find you have little power and won't be able to maintain that position throughout the swing. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor

Thanks Clay, finally a pro that showed and explained to me the piece I have been missing for 30 years - the turning “in” of the wrist to close the club head. I have been away from golf for 16 years but now at practice I am hitting such nice compressed irons. I have had a good looking swing forever, reach sub 80 rounds when playing my top days, but never consistent, ever so often losing it high and to the right, not understanding,rolling over the wrists to compensate, having some quick hooks, the sense to be forced to rush a little bit. The sense of the ball sliding sideway on the face. Now they don’, full stop This is world class stuff! Grateful /Andy

If I can make a suggestion: go to free golf online, (same videos found on youtube) you'll find a guy that takes you step by step through this very swing, it is just broken down into finer and more detailed points. Again, it is the same swing, just the key points are broken down better. The gentleman is a redheaded English man that is very easy to spot. Its a very easy swing to take to the course if you actually follow the steps offered. Using a mirror is very handy. Let the club release instead of pushing it through. Golfer's elbow comes from straining the muscle that is pushing the club through. You want to let it release without pushing it.

It can be the same for every club you play off the turf. Typically, straight down from the lead ear or a little ahead of center is good. You can play longer clubs a little more forward to help you get them in the air and shorter clubs a little more back to hit them lower with more spin. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Been golfing for 30 years and low to mid single digit handicap. ALWAYS struggled with my irons and never de-loft them. Have always flipped and slid (and probably stand up) but I use my timing to try and compensate. Most days I'm ok, but some days I'm terrible. I overcome it with hitting good drives, chips and putts. The rolling the hands over is something I have never seen. Not like you show. It feels to me like a reverse of the flip that I do. I also am steep. I will be heading to the range this afternoon or tomorrow and trying all of this and have no doubt if I put in the practice, my iron game will improve significantly. Thanks for the latest video Clay. On your first segment I have notice that I am now starting to push my iron shots to the right and I am guessing that it is because I am starting to leave the face open like you demonstrated in segment #1. But when I try to roll my wrist to close the face like you were showing I am having trouble with over doing it and smother hooking the ball. Is there a key point in the downswing that I can use to know when to start and stop the move with the left wrist? Thanks.
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
My pleasure! Sounds like you're on the right track. Just ease off the feeling a little bit to get it to straighten out. Play well!
@timnew76624 жыл бұрын
@@TopSpeedGolf Thank you. With your video tips I have started getting the shown lag at the mid-thigh point of the down swing and thus the needed shaft lean at impact. Your video in the first segment showed me why I was starting to push the ball to the right, (not badly but just enough to miss the greens to the right) and what I needed to do to cure it. It was just that in the past when I bowed the left wrist to square the face I was closing the face so much it resulted in the pull smother hook. And I do have the tendency to use a grip a little on the strong side. Which is likely a big factor in why that was happening. But thanks for everything you are doing.

I can get my hips open but if my shoulders open I come out of it and hit a weak fade. Instead I try to get my hips open but my lead shoulder travelling parallel to the path of the ball. If I could shallow the club more maybe opening my shoulders work but I can't get there. It is my thought that we all have slightly different bodies hence there is some variation on the theme. Love the theme but I have to make adjustments for it to work.

Recently discovered your videos and really enjoying them. I'm a right-handed player with a right wrist injury that prevents my wrist from bending, thus in the backswing my right hand disconnects from the left, while the grip ends up in my fingers at the top. Then on the downswing I basically have to re-grip the club. I fear this almost forces that move you mention in the beginning of this video - where my right hand throws at the ball vs. the left hand/arm pulling towards the ball. I can still break 80 occasionally, but I'm by no means consistent. Just wondering if you have any thoughts or suggestions for someone with a wrist injury. Thanks!

So I started from the beginning and tried to work on my swing. Well back in the day I used to hit my 8 iron 160. When I began again I now I am older but still I should be hitting it at least 150. Well was having a terrible time getting back to my distances. Well I watched this video and understood exactly what he was teaching. I went today and warmed up. Well I started hitting my irons using this technique and guess what? I was hitting my 8 iron and avg of 172, my 6 iron 200 yrds, my 9 165 yrds, My driver!! 302!!!!! Yup and I am 60!!!!! i like some of your stiuff- you have great tips, but this thing threw me off for a dude with 429k subscribers you say some flat out incorrect stuff. I've only been back into golf for two years and I know this statement you made is so far off "you can't compress the ball very much at all like the pros if you play a fade" have you ever heard tiger woods hit an iron? You can here the ground the clubface and the ball compressing. and he plays a nice fade. ben hogan didn't compress the ball much? what are you talking about bro? as a natural fader and someone who has just become comfortable enough drawing the ball on the course under pressure. Yes you can compress the ball with a fade. yes you need to hit down on it. but there is nothing like a -3.5-4* angle of attack- 4* out to in with club face open 2* to path. yes the high fade with a driver doesn't compress well- so flippers dont compress fades. but a fade is made for compression you can get your torso more on top of the ball coming out to in- and this is what really makes it compress and feel amazing you get all your weight without having to hang back as much like on a draw. i can hit the low trap draw a mid height draw with my 3 wood off tee and hybrid anywhere and then my 6 iron-sw I love using the trap draw to play a gap wedge into the wind its super fun. but its not the greatest feeling type of compression that you get from pure ing a perfect cover open stance fade. a draw with a steep descent angle to get a lot of compression means you gotta hood the club face (close it toe in and delft it) super difficult to strike that perfectly for some people. especially once you get to 25. playing a pull orf fade becomes necessary at a certain age. we see it over and over again. it felt so friggin weird to stand square to target when i started learning the draw. a baseballs swing is an one the top pull- its just natural and the best way to generate huge straight compressed power. try that- line up right and swing of the top with face matching path.
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! To hit a fade, you have to open the face to the path. Opening the face adds loft which means less compression. You're exactly right, there are many Tour players that mostly play a fade like Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka. Those guys have a lot of speed and get a ton of forward shaft lean so a fade helps them to get the ball a little higher and land softer. Most amateurs are in the position where they would be best suited to hit mostly draws. You close the face to the path on a draw which delofts the face and results in more compression. Everyone is different though. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

@@TopSpeedGolf clay, thank you, I had the problem of flipping. I moved the ball back in my stance and focused on covering the ball. Even the 4 Iron has improved. With my two plane swing this is a gift. Now to play the course.!

Does this wrist movement also work with the driver?

Think I'm steeping my long irons. I can hit my short irons a mile, but I struggle with long irons. I have the club head speed for them. It's confusing.

I would take a look at your swing on video on see what is going on. Play well!

Ok can’t wait to go the range because I do everything correctly until it comes to impact zone and then my right hand takes over. In the northeast so I’m practicing on a mat with rubber balls flying around my living room!! I’ll keep you POSTED!

why not just start your club on path instead of having to drop it in the slot?
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
It's more difficult to get speed from a slat swing position. This is why you see very few Tour players with flat swings. Speed is very important. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Clay you've almost broke my left wrist trying to bend it downward and compress the ball. I can't stop drawing the ball and hooking it.

If you have a great forehand in tennis, it is the same stroke you use for the golf swing.

I implemented this recently and it works like a charm. The key for me, was @ the 3'47" mark. Gets my club perfectly on plane, and you can feel theres more power packed into that position. I even now focus at the spot in front of the ball and am getting an extra clubs distance on ALL my irons. ...and flying over the green. lmao. THANKS!...SO much for this video!

@kevinhawley4034 жыл бұрын
@@TopSpeedGolf Im curious to know what you think about me "focusing on the spot in front of the ball"? (my thinking being that "the ball is incidental" anyway. Its seems to have me a lot more accurate and / or a higher percentage of the time, hitting the ground AFTER the ball...) (?)

Hey Clay. Great great video. Do you do the rolling of the hands also with the woods? and what about the driver? Thanks..

The problem is the rubber mat at all my local public course.... My elbow and wrist started to hurt when I finished practicing......
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hi, it sounds like you might be hitting down into the mat too much. Try to feel like your lead shoulder works up through impact. This will help shallow out your angle of attack. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

The out-in downswing or also called over-the-top comes from simply initiating the downswing with the arms while there isn't yet a change of the weight (which must be the first thing to do as teached by Mr. Hogan) to produce the down-movement of the arms and mainly the clearenceof the lower body for the correct pathway (in-out) that the club should travel for a solid-square clubface contact, Clay has stated that very clearly and is very correct.

Hi.. Have a question about 2 and 3 iron club head speed. What is the minimum club head speed required to get distance with these clubs? Or is club head speed not really an issue...
@gman01554 жыл бұрын
90mph on a bad swing. Mans a beast ha. Clay, I got myself a prgr for lockdown. I'm hitting my 7 iron 175 with the bowing wrist feel down swing. Across board consistently up 20 yards on all irons. Problem is in reality on course I'm hooking way too much. Should I focus on path or bow less? I would love to not give up those numbers or close to. Big fan of the content.
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
If the ball is starting left then I would bow less. If the ball is starting to the right then it's definitely path. If the ball is starting straight then it's probably a little of both unless you're striking it on the toe.
@gman01554 жыл бұрын
@@TopSpeedGolf appreciate the info. Think in general mainly straight then left. Will keep an eye out though

I have played five rounds since I watched your video (many times). I don't have it grooved yet but the move from the top into the slot gives me a real feeling of power through contact. I am struggling a bit with rolling the wrists to square the club face but it will come with practice I think. You have the best video on this that I have seen!

Wow. I am 34 and have been playing since I was 14. After watching this video and hit 100 balls at the range. It was the straightest and longest I’ve ever hit my irons. Life changing! I’ve been doing it wrong this whole time and never knew it. Thank you!

Hello Clay. Great video as they all are. What is the key to hitting 4 or 5 iron just like a PW and I thank you in advance...
@TopSpeedGolf3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Make the same swing as you would with a PW. The longer clubs are naturally going to be more difficult to hit.

I am a 10 handicap and this tutorial is a great learning tool and hoping to improve to single digit this year. My son is just picking up the game and has a nice natural swing. Your example of tossing a ball down the range is great visual for him to see the importance of rotating the hips!

Quick question, if twisting the wrist is the last part of the movement, why won't we do it as a part of the takeaway, or better yet right after the it? I would assume that gives us more time for the setup and minimize the short window we need to twist; therefore, eliminating the potential for error with the clubface.

In the slo-mo swings, it does not look like you are bowing your left wrist as you say to do. It looks more like you're flipping through hard to get the blade to catch up to the swing.

There is not much instruction on this essential topic. It's as if teachers know this and keep it secret, focusing too much on other areas of the swing, whereas where the rubber hits the road is really where it's at.
