I have been playing for 25 years. In college I could occasionally hit my over the top pull over 300 yards. I have been watching your videos over the last two weeks. I was chunking everything until I started turning harder yesterday. For me this video was a day late but it was definitely my problem. I hit two drives over 300 yesterday though I haven't done so in years. I finally feel like I'm swinging instead of hitting. Had to adjust my iron distances about 15 yards too. Thank you Clay!

Awesome tip Clay, I have been struggling the last few months making consistent contact and it has really effected my confidence. Some days I'll go out and shoot a 78, everything is clicking, 2 days later I will throw down a 95 because every shot is a bit off. Just hit 50 balls into my net at home after using pillows as an impact bag to practice. Went through my whole set, best contact I have felt on the ball in the last year. Thanks again.

I watched this lesson a week or two ago. Didn't use the bag, but went to the range concentrating on pulling club down and rotating to create the lag. Didn't happen right away, but once grooved I can't believe the difference. That action has transformed my driver distance. Strangely, accuracy as well. I have been stuck on 11 handicap for ages, 3 rounds in now and this looks like something destined to drag me to the single figure rating I have been desiring. Cheers from Downunder.

I'm a decent player (-4), but it's a lot of work. I've always felt like I was working harder then everyone else that scored the same as I did. I always felt like my move was not right. People compliment me on my swing but I've always felt like I was missing something. This was it! I worked on chopping wood for a few days and it felt great. The swing takes a lot less effort and the ball leaps off the face. I put the swing thought in play Yesterday in our club tourney and shot even par (72) for a tie for second place. First place shot a 71. All round I just kept saying, chop that wood! I only hit one bad shot, which was a skulled 7-iron. Not sure what caused that but I can't wait to work on the new swing feel more this week. That was the first time parring my home course. A lot of 73's but never 72. Thanks a ton!

Just came across this video. I am a TSG member and have been working on the straight line release and making good progress. I am making much better contact but still not generating the club head speed I know I am capable of. Even though I am 66 I am still athletic and strong and it frustrates me to see people, even older than me, carrying their 7 iron 160/170 yards. This drill makes sense and I can see how it can work in conjunction with the SLR method. Going to incorporate this one into my training tonight. Also, the point about keeping the lead arm sinched is a good one and should be part of the SLR section.

Couple questions...I just watched your video on shallowing the club and bowing the left wrist on the way down. Are you doing that here? How can you shallow the club when you strike straight down this way? Does the lag come as a bi product of the sharp change in direction from the top? Do you feel like your pulling the grip down hard and not the club head?
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes, you are doing the same thing here. You're not hitting straight down. You're swinging from the inside (shallow position) and rotating. Lag is not necessarily automatic. If you do it naturally then it is but if you're not then you'll need to consciously do it to get lag. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Just getting into playing golf, but Can you make a step by step video on how to properly swing a golf club (driver and irons) and common swing issues you see with beginning golfers from another sport? I’m a former college baseball player and that swing is night and day with a golf swing. I have the tendency to over rotate/snap my hips and pull off the ball since a golf club is so much lighter than a bat. I can hit it 250+ yards but it’s always pulling hard left and in the trees. I haven’t found a lot of videos that breaks down a proper swing to work on at the range and I’m sure there are other former athletes that have the same struggle in learning how to play golf correctly. Thanks for all the uploads and content.

when you swing the club down, are you allowing the club to stay open (the face towards the camera) as it comes down? Or do you feel like you're swinging the club down while trying to keep the face of the club pointed down towards the ground? Hopefully that made sense. Again, thank you for the awesome videos as always!
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hi Steven, ideally you would already have the face mostly squared up in the early part of the downswing. I'm not feeling like I'm pointing it in any direction. I have it squared up early and I'm just turning through to the ball. The rotation of my body squares the face. Feel is relative though. Hope that helps. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Yes, you need to have the side bend with the rotation to cover the ball. If you don't then you'll just swing over the top. Having this drill the nail feeling helps you to get side bend and cover the ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

I used this drill with the sticks last summer before a trip to Scotland. I enjoyed one of my best ball striking rounds ever which led to a solid round of 75. Unfortunately I lost the magic soon after. My diagnosis was a simple loss of timing and being out of sequence with arm swing and proper body rotation. I have a tendency to pitty-pat the ball and get lazy and it will not work unless you are aggressive through the shot. IMHO

Every action gets a equal and opposite reaction. The harder you pull down the top, more you're pulling your feet away from the target when you want gain momentum toward it. Think of standing on ice and doing the hammer move. Which way would your want to feet slide? Away from the target. You can swing a driver 112mph with just a relaxed (not limp) gravity drop of the arms because your CG is not pulled the wrong way and you don't restrict the turn through the ball. You have to compensate a hard pull down with some added weight shift. Good luck timing all that on the course.

Great video on technique, but I don't understand the obsession with distance (apart from the Driver). Why would I over extend myself to try and hit a Wedge 150 yards, if I can do it more relaxed and controlled with a 9 or 8 Iron? If you try to hit too hard and too far then you are going to compromise on accuracy. The only club that I wish to be able to hit further is the Driver.

How many times did you film hitting it fat before filming?
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
Haha, those are just divots. We were testing out the drill. He wasn't hitting it fat. 😂 Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

How do I NOT stick the club in the ground right behind the ball and mess up my wrist/thumbs once every 100 swings?
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
Make sure you get a good weight shift and get ball first contact.

What degree is your Pitching wedge??
@randymahony81574 жыл бұрын
So you're starting your arms first? Like Hogan said pulling the arrow out of the quiver?
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
No, you need to make sure you rotate which is what is starting first.

I am 109 yds with 6 iron. Help. The opening the body up is hard for me.

Can we use the drill for the driver too
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the sensation will just be different. You want to allow the club to bottom out then feel like you're driving the nail up into the ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
@miked.49384 жыл бұрын
Is it the same for driver ?
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
No exactly but similar. You'll just have the sensation that you're driving the nail up into the ball instead. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

I’m new to golf I was told that each club has its effective distance used for certain distances why would I want to have a pitching wedge reach 157 yardswhy not just use the club I know I can hit 157 yards instead? I’m just asking.
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacob, great question. You can swing slower and use less loft if you want. This wouldn't just apply to your PW though. Maybe you hit your 5 iron 180 yards right now but if you could hit it 210 yards then you would have a distance advantage. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Clay, Q, - Seems that your compression drills should give you similar results? You have a lot going on in this video, maybe a simplified version would be better for us amateurs. Less is more sometimes.

Hi Randy, thanks for the feedback. It's all about finding that feeling that works best for you. If this one doesn't resonate or seems to complex then try one of our other videos. We have lots of drills that accomplish the same things on our channel. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

So if your on the golf course and you have a 157 yard shot, your really going to pull PW? Might want to work on the mental side of approach/attack shots to better manage the distance of iron shots.
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hi Don, if that's how far you hit a PW then that is what I'd pull. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Love these instructions. Also, one really fun thing to do is to play this at .5x speed. You'll know how Clay sounds at the 19th hole. Lol

if i could only get past 125yrds with the PW! Foam balls in the back garden are not the best for telling me the true distance. TY though Clay, will try it out.

It was a PW. I'm not sure on the degrees. I think about 46. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
