You guys are so articulate. You spoke my thought exactly when it comes to the modern western forehand. The swing is abbreviated because it can’t extend far enough due to the downward facing angle. It’s a safe shot but can’t land the killer blow.

Do you have any that shows hits but in slow motion so I can see what you are doing? In my head I am trying to hit the shot you are advocating but the results not the same. I am not getting it. Thanks so much for making and sharing this fantastic video. I’m an intermediate player coming back to the game after a gap of many years. As a child player I just hit the ball and went with what felt right. As an adult player I’ve taken a more systematic approach to understanding but often ran up against seemingly contradictory advice and didn’t know how it all fit together. This video along with your one on different grips has cleared up so much confusion. All the different pieces from different coaches have finally come together. Your explanations, demos and high quality production are outstanding. Thanks for the awesome work 😊👍🏻

With the eastern, you can make contact further in front, but you have a much longer zone to make contact with the eastern in general as you have the strings flat towards the net for more longer. Federer is the perfect example. Watch how far in front he makes contact

One of the best videos for me on youtube that's helped me a ton, watched it multiple times already.... Quick question guys, I'm a 5'8''~9'' 35yr old playing at a 4.0~4.5 lvl who's aiming to get to a solid 4.5~5.0 lvl... I learned the game in my junior years using the eastern grip, and with the modern game moving towards the Semi-Western grip I've been trying to gradually change my grip over the last few years. It's been a difficult path and I find it especially hard when trying to hit any shot which requires some wrist manipulation (ex. running buggy whip crosscourt forehand) as I don't have a flexible wrist... should I still continue to try to make the switch? I think taller guys have it better w the Eastern grip since they have a higher starting clearance for hitting the ball through and I'm not not that tall so....I'm currently in between eastern and semi-western, just wanted some expert advice :) Thanks!
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching 👍 That’s a tough question, the main thing I’m wondering is what made you want to change grips originally? I’ve played around with all the forehand grips and stuck with eastern. I prefer it for many reasons but other players may benefit from the semi, but they need to know what the end goal is with their forehand
@JJVee4273 жыл бұрын
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thanks for the reply! My end goal is to just improve my forehand and get to the ~5.0 lvl. The reason for switching is that SW grip has been the preferred grip for many players today as you know... and also that eastern is harder to play against topspin and high forehands esp if you're not that tall....you would need to take the ball earlier which is not always easy and just thought it could be better to gradually switch...but I'm experiencing that it's not easy to switch grips either and Eastern has it's own benefits also. Therefore I'm kinda stuck w what to do atm, I do feel like Eastern could be better for Doubles play which is what's played mainly here in S.Korea.

I have a quick doubt. when hitting top-spin forehand you were advocating for having the strings face the ground as this will create more spin. However, in 4:38 Alex is hitting his forehand and the strings look like they always face the side rather than the ground. This is something I used to do when I was a junior and I have seen more often on the WTA, is there any advantages to do this? My guess is a bit more control and less spin since you take the rotation component of the wrist away, what are your thoughts? maybe a video on this could be cool!

Noob question: So it seems like some grips (e.g., eastern) are more conducive to fitting flat, and others (e.g., western) are better for hitting with topspin. My coach emphasizes not messing with the grip between shots unless I'm volleying. I usually play with a Western grip when I'm at the baseline. Would you advise changing to Eastern when I get a high short ball that I can finish with a flat forehand? BTW thanks for making such great videos! I've been struggling with hitting flat forehands and found this very helpful

Changing grips on your forehand will ruin your feel for the shot, and you’ll never master one grip. I’d advise you to experiment with a semi western grip, which will give you the best of both worlds

Top spin brusher for me. Having a full western forehand grip, I don’t have a problem producing top spin. However, i find it difficult to put away those high balls. Does it mean that I have to change my grip when I encounter a high ball? Or is there a way to still use a full western forehand but still manage to flatten it out?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial4 жыл бұрын
It is tougher to flatten out for reasons we mentioned in video, you have to make sure you rotate your shoulder forward as much as possible and get your body into the ball with your footwork

Hi guys. I use semiwestern grip so, every time I want to hit flat do I have to change my grip? If so, which is the ideal grip for flat shots? Thank you for everything you do.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial4 жыл бұрын
No, you can flatten out the forehand using the semi western. Focus more on extending outward towards your target 🎯 Are there any lessons you would like to see in the near future? All the best Simon

I've always had the question of how to you point the strings to the ground when you're faced with a high ball...when it's in my hitting zone there's no problem but when faced with a high ball, it seems impossible.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial4 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to as much on high balls, closing the strings is for generating topspin. Higher balls can be hit much flatter

I actually built my whole game on going high loopy topspin forehands and if the enemy puts it too high I go with the high to low flat shot for a winner.

I’m now having wrist issues on the pinky side, and I hit a heavy ball, do you think I should start learning how to hit flat, and would that help the wrist issue? Oh I also tape my wrist all the time now cheers

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I’m pretty sure you’ve covered everything however I think what would be helpful is explaining generally what kinds of strings are for who, tension do what exactly, and the benefits for flat hitters or shots and heavy hitters etc...🤷🏻♂️ you might of covered that too lol cheers
