I think you have probably gotten better. yet I am sure I can find problems with all ur technique on all ur shots. I could watch you play tennis and believe you never got a professional lesson. Why, because you need a HIGHLY skilled coach to help u with the finer points of techniques and what your entire body is doing on a specific shot. People who spend a few hours with a highly skilled tennis pro have better technique. I never had pro lessons until two years ago. I learned all my strokes from the internet and thinking i was doing it correctly. I was massively incorrect. EG. I was opening my shoulder on my forehand too soon, losing rotational and core power by releasing to soon. as one example. You cant pick this stuff up yourself unless u have people video you. One more example, tennis coach on next court. He walked over and said, more snap up the ball, instant ten mile an hour increase on my serve. Took two lessons, fixed my toss placement and over rotating my shoulders on my serve too much. in total he brought an 80 mph serve up to 105 in two lessons. get a GOOD coach, one that coaches at a 4 year college at least, or has played or plays in the challengers, or a former top 1000 player. Good luck. u will get better SOOOOOOOO much faster with a good pro. cheers

@@internetanalytics618 I dont dispute this at all and completely agree. I am currently taking private lessons and after a couple of sessions my forehand has never been better. I can apply the technique changes when we rally through the middle with medium paced balls. But when I play practise matches with it's tough to apply.

@@CR4WLFC i hear you. Keep with it. Do not give up. I had to lose for 4 months straight and not give up on my modern forehand. was tough on the ego for a bit. Federer is why i started to play tennis. Watching him play was just magic. Especially this move, i practiced it for such a long time to keep it as long as possible on my racket to give it this weird spin and slow it down as much as possible. Back then i always played tennis with a friend of mine who was a bit overweight, needless to say i was banned from using that move against him because he couldnt make it to the net fast enough.

What i like is that this video emphasized a variety of applications of the slice which no other video on youtube touched upon: value added. For instance inside out slice is kind of hard for me to hit in the left corner of the baseline while jab slice i hear about for the first time. What i would advise to add to this video is offensive vs defensive slice when to use and how with demonstrations.

Superb video. Chock full of tips to merit watching twice. One point I slightly diverge from you, Alex: I find in watching slo-mo clips of the greatest slicers of all-time that the racquet face at contact is less open than many think. It certainly helps me to avoid hitting high floating slices when I imagine the racquet face being less open, even on low shots. Also, your instructional video in Part III (the follow-thru / finish) alludes to, without actually stating, how much of a 'shoulder shot' the slice is, as opposed to most recreational players who strictly 'arm 'it'. Thanks much.

I have a unique slice backhand with a low take back and swing across the ball kinda like a combination of Steffi Graf's low take back and Roger Federer's follow through which produces a faster hard hitting ball that doesn't float in the air due to the lack of underspin as the spin is more side ways, but when it lands it shoots through the court more and stays lower than your typical underspin slice. It's an offensive shot that most people I play don't know how to deal with it cause of the pace and the low trajectory. I discovered it's actually way better than a typical slice BH which tends to travel slower in the air due to the backspin and sits up more when it lands giving the opponent's more time to set up the point. The low take back allows you to swing forward to the ball at contact which produces the pace and the follow through across the body produces the side spin which skids through the court and doesn't impede the pace of the ball in the air as much as a backspin slice. In fact it's so good as an offensive shot that I use it for defence as well which typically draws an unforced error from the opponents cause they don't know how to deal with the pace and spin. Try it and you'll see. It's works wonders for my game as it helps me set up my forehand for winners!

It sounds more like a backhand drive with sidespin, not so much a slice.

The thing that's tough about learning the slice is that instructors explain the point of contact with the racket face on an angle (your video at 3:16). When you see video frame by frame, the face is almost vertical at contact (Federer at 2:11) Also a very good picture of this is a frame of a Federer slice (at 10:35) in your companion video "...How to Get More Power." I don't know how you teach this, but if you can, it would be helpful. Videos show a forearm roll to square up the racket face before contact. Any success I've had is by visualizing this when I hit slice.

Is focusing to have straigh arm at contact point (or event before) a good thing?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial5 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you need to strengthen your muscles. The technique will only hold up if you're strong enough to maintain it. A straight arm at contact can be a good thing if it happens in a relaxed way, without you forcing it. Forcing a straight arm and doing it hundreds of times can be a very bad thing! Injuries and pains galore.

@TopTennisTrainingOfficial5 жыл бұрын
It depends on the player. In general, the two-hander is easier to learn and get good at, the one-hander takes much more time to master but can produce some great results. Murray would disagree with that statement regarding the slice, compare his slice to Wawrinka who has the best one-handed backhand of all time IMO but a very poor slice. All the best Simon

I would take those slices on and try to get the body weight going through the return using a high to low swing so you can cut down on those high balls
