Theory on the dolphin/porpoise. They have been noted to save humans occasionally so maybe a drowning monk was saved and the animal was honored with a proper burial.

@@peterkoller3761 maybe they didn't have to kill it, a town near me had a bottlenose dolphin that stayed close since he was a young adult. He was around for just over 30 years. The monks may have regarded the porpoise as one of them, hence a proper burial

My assumption when someone buries an animal in their own grave is that the animal is likely to be a pet (in this case the porpoise could be an animal that hung around and the monks became attached to it), or a stray who died nearby.

On the Norwegian coin: a mineral called Ramah chert was quarried in the Torngat Mountains of Labrador and passed along trade routes. Pieces of stone quarried from the Torngats have been found as far south as Maryland in the US and in a Norse settlement in Greenland. It wouldn’t be too outlandish for a Norwegian to trade with an Inuit, and pass along the coin as part of the deal, and that coin made its way south along the trade routes.

My first thought was "pet". A lot of people have had moments with wild animals and people have said they can see "that the animal has a soul" by looking into its eyes. All it takes is one monk who had a moment with the animal, thinking it also has a soul, who decides to burry it properly because of that. But of course, it also could have been food.

RE: the Maine coin. Both of my father's grandmothers were Native women from NH. I had my DNA tested and it came up 13% Eskimo/Aluet. Vikings were trading more than coins ;)
@tessjuel
@tessjuel 3 жыл бұрын
The viking coin from Maine is relly interesting if it's genuine but I can't see any weird mystery there. It's about 1,200-1,300 km (750-800 miles) away from the known viking settlements. It's not at all unlikely for a lost ship to end up that far off and it's also possible the coin was traded from native to native all the way down the coast from Newfoundland.

The skull helmets struck me as pretty bizarre initially, but thinking about it more yielded a possible theory. The skulls of the older children being used as ceremonial headgear (granted the skin and hair are intact as supposed) are done so to properly bury them. By having the older skulls worn over the younger, it implies greater importance. Reason would dictate, then, that the older child is actually the subject of the burial, not the younger. This goes a little further down the rabbit hole in this possibility, but here goes: the small children's corpses are not as important because they are not from the same tribe. Intertribal conflict is not out of the question, and if the main tribe lost a child as a casualty of a skirmish they would want to make sure they were buried properly. Whether the bodies are from other tribes or just orphaned children (or even sacrifices) there's no immediate knowing until further testing is completed.
@JokerzPrincezz
@JokerzPrincezz 3 жыл бұрын
My initial thought was that the children were siblings who died together, or around the same time. This could have been a way to keep the family together, signify the end of a bloodline if this was the last of a couples children, or if they died of disease this could have even been a religious rite to protect remaining family from illness. They could have also died in a way that left the older kids bodies mangled and this was a way to ensure a proper burial as an intact body was important in many cultures.

Any archeologists that study “ ooparts” (out of place artifacts) have some giant Diquis spheres if you know what I mean 😉 They have some giant stone balls.

#7 reminds me of a Tumblr post that suggested how to perplex future archeologists. It definitely seems to be in the same vein.

You can actually go on a tour in costa rica and they will take you to a quarry and show you where many were made, ones that were discarded and how to make them.

With regards the porpoise, it would be very interesting to see if it lies along the same direction as humans were traditionally buried by the monks at the time.

I am surprised the Roman pentagon-dodecahedrons only found along the upper Danube and in Raetia did not come up! They are about fist sized, hollow, with different sized holes on the surfaces and knobs on each corner, quite elaborate and skillful pieces of craftmanship the purpose of which nobody knows.

Dear Simon: Here's hoping you took time out of your busy Christmas day to spend 15 minutes or so on Zoom with your family and stuff yourself with all the fruitcakes they sent you as gifts! Now, on to the video!
