Another theory that's been bounced around regarding the Sphinx's identity holds that it was originally constructed as an homage to Anubis and it's head was carved to reflect this (e.g. a jackal), but during the reign of Amenhotep II, he ordered the head be re-fashioned into his likeness. Again, it's one theory amongst many.

5:10 Geologist here!! Since water is a waaaay more dense fluid than air, the erosive effect is exponentially bigger. Is not even necessary for the climate to be humid, since in most really arid regions (like the Atacama dessert) the erosion caused by rainfall and flash flooding is way more intense than wind erosion even though it happens so rarely, and it dominates the shaping of the landscape. Therefore it can be highly possible than the occasional rainfall would cause more damage to the limestone of the sphinx than the wind, specially so if it's acid rain!

The original head was most likely that of a falcon. Many hieroglyphs refer to different aspects of the Ra-Horus deity, which call it Horemakhet (Horus in the horizon), and Horakhty (Horus the dweller in the horizon) among other variations. The considerably 'cleaner' condition of the head to that of the body despite it being weathered for the entire time the body was submerged by sand indicates two things very strongly, that it was renovated, and the head reshaped (disproportionately) in the time of (possibly) Khufu. Were it Khufu who instigated the renovation, then that would place the sphinx relatively early dynastically speaking. Khufu was only the third generation after the very first pyramid builders, and (if you go by the accepted chronology) part of the first wave of builders, the ONLY builders to construct massive, massive pyramids of incredible accuracy and construction techniques. Every pyramid after the initial wave is dramatically lower in quality, and Egyptian culture rapidly moved to building temple complexes and underground cemetery complexes instead. connected to the last point. If Khufu renovated the head, leaving the highly weathered body, that proves incontrovertibly that the body was already weathered so very early in Egyptian dynastic history. Here's something you, and many others don't notice. The weathered enclosure walls, cut at the same time as the body, are cut unevenly. The highly weathered southern wall is cut at an angle, and lays underneath the causeway which leads directly to the complex beneath 'Khafre's' pyramid. This would suggest that it was cut (and the sphinx carved) AFTER the causeway was constructed, and yet still during the period in which Egypt had regular and temperate rainfall. This places the 'great' pyramids and sphinx far earlier than everything which followed.

I am definitely not an Egyptologist, however, it makes sound religious sense to invoke some sort of guardian to protect the tombs, and the building of the physical body of the sphinx could be seen as doing just that via some form of sympathetic magic (or magick, if you prefer.) That's what I always assumed the Sphinx was, at least. Like a posted gargoyle or a painted cross upon one's door, it appears protective, and makes people question what else to expect beyond this point - albeit in a far more grandiose fashion than most. But, like I said - just an idea.

7:32 Actually, it is mentioned in the Old Testament. Isaiah 19:19 "In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the LORD." This is in reference to the Great Pyramid, as at the time of it's history Egypt was in a civil war between upper and lower Egypt, and the pyramid was located near the center of the kingdom, so it's located in the midst of it. Also, it was located at Giza, meaning "border," so it also at the border thereof. It, and possibly the Sphinx, are the only structures in Egypt that fit the description.

They haven't confirmed it but there is strong evidence that suggests water erosion occurred on and around the sphinx. Advocates of the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis believe that an ancient civilization built the pyramids before they were wiped out. A recently discovered massive impact site in Greenland, dated to around 12,000 years ago, may be the smoking gun that proves this hypothesis. I don't have strong opinions either way but people who dismiss the Younger Dryas hypothesis should remember that many in academia dismissed the dinosaur asteroid extinction hypothesis right up until the Chicxulub crater was discovered.

The rainfall erosion argument is the correct one. The official timeline is wrong, & much too abbreviated. The Sphinx is one of our oldest structures, & is closer to 10,000 yrs old than 5,000, back when the Sahara had monsoon rains. Every so many thousands of years, the Earth’s wobble alters the rain patterns. The Sahara was full of lakes & rivers & marshes. And presumably will be again once the wobble happens again. Underneath the Sahara, they’ve discovered a massive water reservoir in the deep aquifer.

Dr.Hawass refused to give her permission to go; it was clear that she should get back to work. She began to plead with him. Ancient Egyptians, when trying to discredit or disgrace an individual in their history, would remove the nose of all likenesses, ritually removing the spirits ability to breathe, and removal of the beard was used to strip someone of their royalty, much like stripping a serviceman of his medals or a noble of his lands and titles. This was likely done during a usurpation of Ancient Egypt to discredit an entire royal lineage, (supposedly) legitimizing the current rule. Concurrently all mention of said lineage would have been carved out of all reliefs and chipped off of all painted cartouches. This also was well understood by the populace to act as a taboo, and a moratorium against passing knowledge of these families and individuals to their descendants. My best guess would be the sphinx was defaced during the uniting of the upper and lower kingdoms to legitimize the narrative that the sides were "united" instead of one side forcibly overthrowing the other.
@ordinarynocturne5 жыл бұрын
In regards to the water erosion theory, water can erode rock surprisingly quickly. A overly massive flood that only happened once could cause enough damage to leave erosion marks. Now, it's not at all likely, but not impossible. Also, the desert sands shift about much like water thanks to high winds, so perhaps it could cause similar erosion patterns. Now, I'm no expert, but I've read and watched a lot about the Sphinx. My unprofessional guess is that limestone is very absorbent; any ambient water vapor is going to get sucked up over the centuries, making the stone rather soft and "wet". Add high winds and scouring sands, and boom, erosion similar to known water patterns. As for its appearance, I do think the carving we see today isn't the original, which is why the head is noticeably out of proportion. Whether it was originally a lion head or that of a previous pharaoh, who knows. I think it was further altered from that-- perhaps more than once-- to its present image. Could be why it doesn't look much like Khafre.

I doubts it’s rain water damage. It’s more like to be rain water which seeps into the rock and the water close to the outer surface of the rocks can freeze overnight in the desert, this over time makes the outer surface of the rocks degrade.

I really curious what that is below the right ear 15:35 It looks like a doorway or opening that has been plugged with another boulder. Its not compatible with erosion, that's for sure.

I mean could it be--And here me out here… Just a giant structure built by an egotistical pharaoh who just wanted to replicate his likeness. The why you might ask. Well because simply HE COULD. No mystery, no deep meaning just power and ego.

if the ancient egyptians could build a sphinx, can't the modern egyptians build a protective dome around it?

nurvsy you’ve never been to the hellhole that is Cairo - Giza is right outside the city they just never photograph it so people can see that. The Egyptians have done nothing useful since the pharaonic era.

One of the most recent examples of the persistence of this falsehood was Louis Farrakhan's "Million Man March" speech where he said: "White supremacy caused Napoleon to blow the nose off the Sphinx because it reminded you [sic] too much of the Black man's majesty." And the perpetuation of this myth in "Afrocentric"Over the centuries the Great Sphinx has suffered severely from weathering...Man has been responsible for additional mutilation. In 1380 A.D. the Sphinx fell victim to the iconoclastic ardor of a fanatical Muslim ruler, who caused deplorable injuries to the head. Then the figure was used as a target for the guns of the Mamluks." In the book The Egyptian Pyramids: A Comprehensive Illustrated Reference (Jefferson, NC: McFarland, 1990), p.301, the author, J.P. Lepre, adds the fact that, in addition to the 14th century damage, "The face was further disfigured by the eighteenth century A.D. ruler of Egypt, the Marmalukes

Anyone with an even a rudimentary knowledge of Geology recognizes the erosion on the sphinx as rainwater and not wind induced. Look at the erosion on the sphinx ENCLOSURE and this is clearly obvious. Also obvious is that the carving has had some restoration on at least one and possibly more occasions.

The body size in comparison to the head is not proportional, this noticeable size difference tells us this is not the original bust. Yet everywhere you look carvings and statues are in great detail and proportional in size. Highly doubt this size difference would be allowed to stay.

It's interesting, how we perceive the ancient. I mean, we could build a pyramid, now, if we wanted to. A huge pyramid, massive. In our own time, we would see and understand why it was built, of course, we would have our own perceptions of it. Vanity, being the main perception, I think. But, after time had obscured all of the obvious reasons, people thousands of years in the future would wonder, and wonder, why was it built? Reminds me of an Indiana Jones quote, "Take this watch. Ten dollars from a vendor in the street. But I take it and bury it in the sand for a thousand years, it becomes priceless."

Interesting and surprisingly comprehensive theories. I despise the alien theories more than anything in the entire world, but that’s beside the point. What I’m surprised about is not mentioning the various entrances into the Sphinx that were photographed in the 20’s. The pictures are very accessible. It was also in the 20’s that they poured concrete into these multiple entrances, also widely photographed and documented.

What if the area use to be lush and filled with mountains or small mountain like rocks that became the base for the carving of the sphinx and pyramids eventually leading to this lush place being turned arid by being drowned under all of dusted rock that would have been a by product of carving

It’s most likely Khafre, the water erosion hypothesis is kinda idiotic, Napoleon didn’t shoot off the nose, in the time of the New Kingdom it was known as Hor-em-akhet (Horus of the horizon) and the Sphinx was once painted in nice pretty colors until it got sandblasted for thousands of years.
