I remember doing the bottle dance with a local production of Fiddler right before covid. It was the best experience of my life. Many broken bottles. We did it legit, no magnets, no tape, just glass bottles with water and hats. Great memories.

When I married my Scottish born husband, he wore kilt, my father was Punjabi Indian and my mother was Russian Ukrainian Polish Jewish. So while I wore a purple legaha, we got married under a chupa and my husband broke the glass. This brings back memories of my Jewish heritage. It makes me cry.

I'm not even Jewish and this movie makes me cry every time I see it. So rich in wisdom, so powerful. We all need to abandon tribalism and embrace each other. So much to learn and ttoshare.

This scene has always been one of my favourites of this movie. The dancing is powerful, and the scene so important considering how swiftly the film dives into the darker theme by the end of the wedding. Sunrise sunset was a perfect starter song to the whole wedding, considering how swiftly the dark sets in moments after this engertic celebration.

True meaning of life summarize perfectly in 3 minutes. Started carefree as a child. Eventually start and support a family like balancing bottle on head. You are never the only crazy one, everyone is balancing bottle on head. When you think things are at worst, wait till you have to shuffle forward, while kneeling, while balancing bottle on head. Finally when the bottle is off, celebrate like no tomorrow. Always lift me up watching this.

+Jon Chan ~ Having just seen an amateur dramatic presentation of this, and we could see that one bottle was wobbling, the audience gave a sigh of relief and started clapping along when they took the bottles off their heads. I saw Fiddler on the Roof on stage in the mid 1960s in Sydney Australia ( now 57 years ago) My mum was enthralled by the films music & song & at the theatre we sat in a box which gave a wonderful view. The performers & actors were amazing ( im not sure if if was indeed Topol who took his film role of Rep Teviev, that we saw?) However the dancers who did the dance scenes incl this one The Bottle Dance were Russians On loan from some Ballet Company to do this F on the R tour. Seeing this dance live was breathtaking & all the hairs on my neck & arms stood up They even had the stage covered in sand or dust to re create the puffs from the Bottle Dancers & they danced much longer than the film scene! Wonderful, truely Wonderful. Anyone who feels depressed should listen to the song If I Were A Rich Man & watch Topol singing it Also to cheer your heart Watch this Bottle Dance scene! Its a real tonic for the soul! Peace 🇬🇧👧

This entire film blows me away. First time I saw it on a proper screen, I was maybe 5-7. There was a late weeknight showing at, I think, The Crest, in north Seattle. I had seen this film before. But, it was from off of TV in the late 1970's. So, edited and not the proper aspect ratio. So, my mom asks, "do you want to see this tonight in a real theater?" I said, "Yes!" She said, "okay. tonight is a school night. You still have to get up for school and you can't complain about being sleepy!" OMG. One of my most favorite childhood memories. We got home around 1am and I was really tired the next morning. But. OMG. Totally worth it. :D

The sense is correct. This is quite obviously the best dance in the world and is indicative of the high art and culture which the Jewish tradition has to offer. And so it is a shame the Russian pogroms happened, as well as the expulsions elsewhere in Europe since the Middle Ages culminating in the Holocaust. Highlighting Jewish culture and its suffering is partly what makes Fiddler a great film.

Prejudice is a human frailty. Humans are fallen beings. We can strive for perfection, but ultimately that's all we can do. Btw, as a 21st century Gentile, this movie made such a horrible case for the Jewish tradition, made even worse by the fact that it's supposed to be the *essential* representation of the Jewish tradition, that it almost made an anti-Semite out of me.

Is this something that started with "Fiddler on the Roof," or is it a traditional dance that is far older? I can't find anything older than the Broadway musical, so I'm tempted to think that's the source. Whether it's traditional or Broadway, it certainly is phenomenal. It certainly has its roots in Hassidic music and dance.

It was made for the movie. It's not a traditional dance. Looks amazing though.

@@carol7851 True. It was actually Jerome Robbins who choreographed it for FOTR. He previously had worked on West Side Story as a choreographer.

Watching the hat dance at a live production is a sight to see, I mean even if they do use two sided tape, which they probably do, that still adds weight to the hat itself and makes it more prone to fall off.

We used magnets in our production- easier to take the bottle off at the end. :-)

I'm so going to have those dance at my wedding. I'll try to get my siblings to do as well at their weddings ☺️. That'll make 7 times I get to dance to this!
