Very nice work! I feel that your guillotine design is superior to most. I like the idea of the swage being square on one end, tapered on the other yielding a choice of action. I like your approach to things and your editing technique is entertaining. Of all the metal work videos I have studied, to me yours are the best. Thank you and please make more!

So cool! It seems so simple once you see how it's done; but was extremely clever of the first person to think of it

I don’t have a power hammer so I am making sewage for tenons. I hope I can weld a Harty shank on the bottom. My welding is very limited
@torbjornahman4 жыл бұрын
For manual hammering you might look into a guillotine tool instead! Working with a striker you can make a set of bottom and top tools

thanks for posting your videos i've gotten a lot out of them ... i need to build a guillotine would you mind sharing the basic dimensions of the one you're using in the video? specifically the diememsions of the base plate and slot for the die. thanks!

It can't be much fun to use this without an autohammer. Guess that is when you bring in a helper eh?
@torbjornahman8 жыл бұрын
This type of tool is more or less only used under power hammers I think, but should work fine also with a striker, but you will mangle and deform the top part being hit by a sledge.

The problems of dimensionality with forging remind me of the corrections needed to change the bearing, yaw, pitch of an airplane

I think if you put two springs inside left and right of swage to keep the upper die always little above the bottom die you wont need every time to pull the upper die , wasting time and the tool. Just an opinion.
@torbjornahman6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can make all sorts of additions for a better workflow. This is just the basics :)

René VdB I don't have any plans for it. It's more or less based on the "original" Smithin Magician - www.blacksmithsupply.com/catalog.aspx?StoreName=blacksmith_supply&DeptID=269444I'm sure, if you google it, you will find enough images to make your own.

@@torbjornahman facebook.com/watch/?v=2434576996863329 here is one,
I'm not so sure what that is really, and the dating sounds ridiculous. It could be a blacksmithing tool but probably more like a fuller than a swage. Most drills back then was sharpened by reforging the tip, so in that regard it could be right.

@@torbjornahman I have watched since day 1 but seen a few things that just aren't adding up, i am not a blacksmith that is why I was here looking into swages, there was another episode they found purple wood. well as I have plumbed many things over the years, there is a chemical for pvc and it just happens to be purple primer for pvc plumbing, i literally look like they dunked the wood into a bucket of it
