We were fortunate to have a couple of nesting fieldfares (björktrast) in our garden this summer. I managed to capture a lot of the activities in the nest including parts of the hatching! Incredible animals.

The fieldfare (Turdus pilaris) is a songbird from the thrush family (Turdidae). It is a migratory bird that lives in large groups. In the summer the fieldfare breeds in colonies in northern Europe and in Asia, where it mainly feeds on all kinds of invertebrates. The winter quarter is located in the more southern parts of Europe and Asia and in North Africa. Here he mainly feeds on fruits and seeds.

@@psidvicious The American robin is a thrush, so it's a close cousin of the fieldfare. Don't expect any beautiful song, though: the fieldfare makes a kind of raspy chatter. It's also considered a pest, especially among berry growers.

The birds are just nesting. Here in coastal South Carolina. I live a mile from the Atlantic and see many shore birds, gulls, marsh herons and egrets...lots of birds like cardinals everywhere in my back yard with all my feeders. We have 6 feeders and places for nests...we also have a resident great horned owl 🦉 couple. Huge birds...and every now and then I can see Bald Eagles 🦅 over head. What a beautiful site...best wishes to you.

Yes, never knew about that kind of housekeeping by Robins (I think they’re Robins?). As luck would have it, I was recently keeping track of a live-feed of some bald eagle chicks on YT. I found it fascinating that within a day or 2 of hatching, the chicks instinctively knew to ‘poop’ outside of the nest! Agreed, disgusting but naturally and biologically incredible at the same time. 🤜🤛

@@psidvicious Super late reply, but it seems to be a kind of Thrush, which is the same family of birds that American robins are in! Something kind of gross about thrushes, including American robins, is they seem to eat their chick's poop even when they're old enough to leave the nest (like in this video at 12:47). Most passerine birds stop eating chick's poops after 6-7 days, since their digestive systems start working better which results in the poops being mostly or entirely waste. Doesn't seem to bother any of the thrushes though.
