These are the best blacksmithing videos available, no talk, no fucking stupid music, just how it’s done by a master.

I cannot thank you enough for showing me your process. I've just done the project, took about 90 minutes for the first one and it came out like I've done hundreds. It does you great credit when your process is so refined that a hobbyist smith like me can get a similar result on the first try. Although the texturing and proportion on your leaf are much better.

Leaves are the bane of my life in blacksmithing! I'm getting better with them, but I've still got a long way to go. Grear work and wonderful techniques! Cutting those notches is a nice little touch of realism!

When i watched this video i was thinking about the possibility to save a uprised nerve stem in the middle on the leaf in the beginning, i know it´s way harder to make that way than chiseling it downwards, but i am thinking of make an Swage block for that, experimented with som scrap pieses earlier with good outcoming results so i think it will work with some practise.
@torbjornahman
@torbjornahman 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, an uprised ridge would look nice too. Harder to do by hand (hammer control), but probably quite easy with some sort of swage as you say. I may have to experiment with that :)
@sheep1ewe
@sheep1ewe 10 жыл бұрын
Torbjörn Åhman I got the best results when trying to use a svageblock tool made for the anvil and hammer the pice downward to the block. I made the svageblock by chiseling. However, I realy love Your leaf as it is! It´s realy beautiful as it is. It just that i love to experiment in the workshop. :)

Sorry if this seems a silly question but it seems that you're keeping heat for a really long time. What kind of Steel is that that it's not burnin? Great video though you definitely giving me something to think about!!!

Hi, Great videos. At the end, why were you hammering the leaf on a tree stump and not the anvil? Also what type of hammer where you using? Thanks
@torbjornahman
@torbjornahman 9 жыл бұрын
Matt Behnke 1. It's to not mar the textured front of the leaf. A wood surface will not damage or leave marks on the steel, it will conform to the shape of the work somewhat. 2. You can use a hollow in the wood as a "sinking tool/swage" which bends the work. - I used a hammer with a rounded surface to bend each half of the leaf .

Glenn Rose Yes, common problem with most hand made products. Very labor intensive. But, blacksmithing is also about finding new and more efficient ways of working. Forging a leaf from 20mm round stock is probably not that efficient if you work by hand, but it's fascinating how you can move metal!
