also rewatching the first season of torchwood is tough with these guys... like season 2 does so much more justice for these characters and season 3 is just so fucking good, really im just waiting for them to fall in love with these characters and watch s2 and 3 finale to see them caring cos they will and its so deep and dark and just goddamn amazing

i feel like half of the problems in season one could have been fixed (or at least would;t have been as big of a deal) if torchwood hired a therapist... like suzie betrayed them b/c she didn't know how to deal with the life/death she faced, Tosh was manipulated by that alien with the telapathic pendant b/c she felt that she coudln't trust her teammates, owen is just literally suicidal, ianto and gwen also have problems, just pls hire a therapist

Or hell even just manage your staff better. I like Ianto, but bringing a cyberman into the base, lying, endangering the lives of everybody there and threatening to let Jack die when he gets the chance is pretty reasonable grounds for "You're fired, here's the amnesia pill." In episode 1 we see basically the entire staff not giving a shit about protocol and taking alien tech out the base for their own selfish benefit, an issue which continues with events like Gwen activiating the Ghost Machine for no reason and stealing an amnesia pill to drug her boyfriend. It's frustrating when we hear about how they're an elite team, the best of the best, but everything we actually see is them being incompetant, untrustworthy, breaking down in the field and actively endangering everyone around them. Especially when the finale relies on presenting them as reaching a mental breaking point with Jack, we really don't feel the impact because the whole squad have been fuck ups from the very beginning.

You guys keep commenting on how Jack is so interesting because he's so morally gray. I think the show was trying to do that with all the characters. They're all part of this organization dedicated to keeping the country and the public safe, but the secrecy and some of the choices they make lead to a blurring of moral lines. I don't think this first season is always successful in establishing the characters motivations for some of the morally ambiguous choices they make. It feels like sometimes the writers throw in random violence, sex and other edgy content just so they can say --see we're not Doctor Who, we write for adults.

I have had small things, much smaller than Owen losing someone he fell in love with (after a week), make me insanely depressed. Albeit I had already been dealing with those kinds of feelings for years. We don't know what mental state Owen's exactly been at, so I can believe he'd want to just end it. Most of the time we don't think logically when we feel suicidal tendencies. I agree with Aaron about Owen looking back at his life and just have everything come crashing down because Diane left him. It's NOT a big jump at all for Owen to want to kill himself. All it takes is one bad thing for your mind to spiral out of control.

They need to finish season 2 of Torchwood before watching "Turn Left." SPOILERS BELOW Rose mentions to Donna when the atmosphere ignites that Gwen and Ianto were killed and Jack was transported to the Sontaran homeworld. There is a noticeable lack of mentioning either Owen or Toshiko, which means they are already dead at this point.

The fight club dudes in this are basically like American Psycho. They're rich, bored, and can't find anything meaningful to do with life. I can imagine that the thrill of getting into a cage with a rat-faced monster would be something that would seem appealing and exciting. It's still a little thin, but I don't think it's too out there as a concept. Young businessmen get up to all kinds of crazy shit to have a thrill.

i think its very believable. i dont know where you are from but in the UK up until recently certain super rich posh boys(at oxford) would go into resaurants, destroy them and then pay for repairs. i get a horrible and sad feeling from some stories coming out of US fraternities too. lad culture gone way too far.

Exactly, that's what I was trying to point out. People may not fight weevils IRL, but they do plenty of other crazy shit for the sake of the thrill, so there's no reason to think someone wouldn't be crazy enough to try this sort of thing if weevils were real.

It's all about guys who just don't have satisfaction from there modern lives, sometimes having it all isn't enough especially if it's all without any meaning. In regards to Owen it's not really about Diane as such, more about him looking at what he feels his life is before and after she has gone. He thinks it's pointless because circumstances have not allowed him a happy ending or at the very least an amount of purpose. Working for Torchwood is completely thankless, no one (barring a small team) realises what you’ve done to help save people and you die young with no one noticing that you’re gone.

And people wonder why I hate Gwen... she literally cheated on Rhys multiple times, told him and then drugged him so he wouldn't remember just to make herself feel better. What a dick. Also, Owen's pain doesn't stem just from Diane... Diane is the most recent part of his pain. But you're going to have to keep watching to know why Owen is so closed off. After you see what made Owen join Torchwood you start to understand him better and connect more with his character. The same goes for Tosh and Ianto. Once you discover more about these characters, you'll love the show even more. But Gwen... Gwen is just... nothing she ever does makes me like her. The others always redeem themselves but Gwen is a constant disappointment. Also I totally caught that IT Crowd reference! I love that commercial!
