RodDoor is the first kinetic object by Klemens Torggler and was invented in 1997 and publicly exhibited in the same year.
The minimalist design with 2 rectangles and a coupling rod was further developed over the years through iteration and equipped with a second rod in favor of a balanced movement. This object has been manufactured in many ways from all conceivable materials and with various hidden technology. Since the movement is very balanced, i.e. there is no uncontrolled tilting, lightly built objects, despite the shearing rectangles, are absolutely safe to operate and harmless. Only a small amount of force is needed to set the objects in motion, which means that there is only a small amount of kinetic energy in the moving object and therefore the object can easily be brought to a standstill.
Like all kinetic works, these also serve the artist and creator as a playing field for various image motifs in order to work with the change of the motifs through the special movement. → • Klemens Torggler "Pict...
There are also extremely heavy variants of the RodDoor made of solid steel. These works may only be moved by trained personnel.
The EvolutionDoor® kinetic sculptures as well as any other concept by Klemens Torggler are internationally copyrighted as individual artistic creations.

Turned sideways and motorized, this would make a beautiful garage door. As far as a passage door in a residence: no thanks. Imagine getting up for drink in the middle of the night and snagging/pinching yourself. Conceptually beautiful, nevertheless.

The design as an art piece is great, but the design as more of a functional door worthy of a steel one at least, seems flawed. It needs a steel track groove like a hidden track slide door, but mounted on the out side against the far wall. That would eliminate a forced entry attempt since it would brace the entire outside edge between a bolted through brick steel rail. I would assume the inner side would be pretty strong with the support of the central bar positions and outer bearing mounts. Just food for thought

A door that you have to stand back while it opens to prevent loss of limbs... Not a great idea for a household, but I think the key part is that the door is heavy and metal, yet easy to open without electrical actuators. I'd like to know the stats with this, if it is better then a door with tracks, actually superior to a conventional door for applications like bunkers or defensive measures.

Well, it depends of the application for this. As an art piece it is great, but where would this be practical to use? A household? Not at all. In a public area a heavy door will be useful, and opened often enough to look for an alternative to rails and electricity, but children and idiots will mess it up and cut off their fingers, hence the dangers. While I appreciate the attitude of survival of the fittest, let the idiots learn the hard way, nobody will use this in their business for insurance and health and safety reasons. For a security door or defensive measure? It wont be used by idiots, so safety is not an issue, but then again it wont be used often so the reason for avoiding rails and actuators is void anyway. So a conventional door still makes more sense. I don't see the use for this door.
