@ToriLynnPPH7 жыл бұрын
It's actually fairly unusual for pet hedgehogs to get worms - I'm glad to hear you got it taken care of quickly though!
@lexrose37687 жыл бұрын
PugPibbleHedgie, Actually it's not very unusual I work at an exotic vet and hedgehogs with worms are one of the most common things we see in hedgehogs. 😊
@stephaniemoreno41456 жыл бұрын
Lexy Rose why is it so common? is there a reason behind it happening?
@lexrose37686 жыл бұрын
Stephanie Moreno, All wild hedgehogs carry worms, Healthy hedgehogs 'develop' a resistance (or immunity) to these worms, which means that the hedgehog itself prevents the worm numbers building up to the point at which they become a problem to the hedgehog (so that normally the hedgehog and its parasites will live in harmony.) However, if a hedgehogs immunity is reduced (by, for example, a bad injury, disease, starvation or even the stress of hospitalisation) the worms can then multiply unchecked; this will then result in them getting to such high numbers inside the hedgehog that they DO now cause a problem. And basically common sense is that all Hedgehogs are pulled from the wild, no matter if they were bred because generations before them were pulled from the wild. Hope this clears some things up. :)
@stephaniemoreno41456 жыл бұрын
Lexy Rose hey, yeah for sure. Thanks for the response, I have never heard anyone mention that it is “common” I can see how an added stress could induce an influx, though.

I figured this tip out from a friend! If you already have a wire cage, and you’re having issues with heating or you hedgehogs climbing this could be an option for you! My friend cut pieces of fleece to match the sizes of the walls. She used 2 layers to make it thicker, and attached the fleece to inside of the back wall and the 2 side walls. Then she did the same for the front wall, but only did it halfway up so that it would still have some ventilation. It helped insult her cage, and I’m assuming it would prevent climbing as well! It might be cheaper than buying a whole new cage if you already have a wire one!

I know this is a late comment, but I thought it might be helpful. Recently I learned that Aspen bedding is not a good option for hedgies, at least where I live. Normally would use aspen bedding, but apparently most are inhabited by mites. Mites are little bugs that make your hedgehog itch, cause irritation and dry skin, and in my case, make their quills fall out. My vet said that about 95% or aspen bedding is inhabited by mites just for people's information.

It’s a barred cage but I think I will be fine because I’m comfortable with heating cuz I own a bearded dragon and I will have a space heater. I will have a pet room with all my pets so it will get nice and warm. I might consider getting a heating pad but my friend almost caught her whole room on fire from one sooo I don’t know lol. Thanks for this it was very helpful ❤️🙂

I'd definitely avoid a heating pad, like your friend has experienced, they're a bit of a pain and tend to overheat. There are lots of hedgehogs with really awful burns from them.

PugPibbleHedgie (this account is run by 2 people ) I was the one who had my room catch on fire from a heating pad. There horrible it always left my hedgie with burns on his feet but my vet just said they'll go away so I thought nothing of it. My hedgies cage is In my room so one night when I was sleeping my mom saw smoke all from my room and my hedgies cage was on fire (he's ok he just turned 2 yrs old) and my dad got a rlly bad burn on his foot. I would never recommend a heat pad to anyone. Maybe if you can find a better brand than zoo med but other than that there a hazard for hedgies

Hi Tori. Doing some research on my (hopefully) future Hoggo. I'm aware hedgies need to be kept at strict temperatures in their habitats. However, while I recognise certain temperatures could force them to attempt hibernation, I was wondering how long it would take between being out of their habitat and in lower temperatures for that to happen. For instance, were I to take my Hedgie out of his 23C home and play with him for, say, 3 hours in a 14C room, or letting him run around for a few hours, would he be okay with this? How many hours can he be comfortably away from his house safely?

I have a question is it okay to use heating pad?.. for Hedgehog?..
@Momo-hf1os7 жыл бұрын
Hello! I actually have two questions for you if that's okay :) First of all I just wanna say I love your videos and they have been a huge help in getting more research to eventually have a pet hedgehog (waiting on the money to get everything and be completely ready) First question is about cages. The climate here where I live is a bit of both: cold in winter and hot in summer. And I do prefer wire cages but I wanted to make sure if it was really safe to get it. The average of my house temperate in winter without heating is from 19°C to 21°C, and I wanted to ask you for your opinion if I can or cannot get a wire cage, if it would be best to get a bin. Second question is: have you ever tried using electric blankets or if you know if they're bad or good. Cus I haven't seen anyone mentioning electric blankets and that would be a way to make sure that the whole cage would be at least warm (warmer). thank you for you attention and lots of love from Portugal! ^^
@ToriLynnPPH7 жыл бұрын
In theory you can use a wire cage, of course! In Ohio where I am, we get all four seasons in full swing so our winters can be quite nasty and I still manage. However, I do keep the temperature in my home a bit warmer in the winter and I do tend to cover the cages with blankets in the evening to insulate. So, I'd hesitantly say you can try it! But I'd perhaps keep a bin on hand in case it doesn't work, or be prepared to make modifications on the wire cage. :) As for the electric blankets, some people use them to insulate cages in the evening and to give a little heat boost in a cold room, but they can't be used as a main source of heat because they can't be stabilized enough to hold a temperature, and hedgehogs shouldn't come in direct contact with them.
@elisabeth_kawaii65183 жыл бұрын
I am getting my hedgehog the day after tomorrow. I live in a warm climate so we turn the heat up in our 2 months of semi winter to 23 celcius and in the summer keep it at 25 because it get's real hot here. I bought the ceramic heat transmitter anyway, just in case the temperature in the 2 months of winter isn't correct in the cage. Thanks for all the amazing advice. I ordered a cute set of fleece liner, tunnel and snuggle sack. I can't wait for my girl to arrive 😍 I am used to bonding with small animals, but part of my bonding is not picking them up but let them come up my hand themselves. Do you recommend picking the hedgehog up anyway if she doesn't come up herself? Because i understand the contact is vital in socializing them? Xoxox

I have one guinea pig (please do not hate on me I had two Guinea pigs but one passed) and three hamsters. I am highly thinking about getting a hedgehog. I am prepared for mess, smell, high-maintenance (as my guinea pig is all that plus a drama queen), and also it being nocturnal (I have three hamsters. Hamsters=nocturnal) Also I am fine with feeding live bugs, handling pointy quills, and a potentially unsocial hedgehog. I already have a small guinea pig cage collecting dust in the basement (it’s way too small for guinea pigs but probably okay for hedgies) I have hermit crabs which have a heat source (a heat pad) so probably my parents would be okay with me getting a heat lamp for the hedgie. I have an exotic vet ten minutes away, which I take my piggy and hammies to in case they get sick. You guys made it to the end! What do you think??? Should I get a hedgie? I would prefer a male because 3/4 of my small animals are females (and I’m also okay with seeing masturbation, lol, I’m used to it, I bred my hamsters once so I saw it)
@lilyprice32076 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have alot of animals already. In my opinion I'm fine with the 4 animals I have at the moment and I think that's a good amount of animals. 2 are hamster and 2 rabbits so that's good so that in the day i hang out with my rabbits alot in the day and my hamsters at night. Seeing as you already have 3 hamsters which are nocturnal I would say to not get another nocturnal pet so you have more time for the animals you have at the moment. And hedgehogs can get pretty expensive. So maybe in the future when you have less animals that would be great but its up to you.

Would there be a way for me to work around the cold and wire cages? Or I guess my question is: will a c & c cage work better? I’ll probably end up ordering a c and c cage. I’ve heard of putting heat lamps then heat pads under he bedding / tunnels/ fleece. And putting hits etc. would this work in a cold room?

I have a video explaining that better (called All About Our Cages) but essentially I just left out the side panels and then zip tied them together!

About The heat, what if we rescue a baby one from the street. We are in Eastern Europe and these guys live outdoors and can be found scurrying around the streets mid winter! Do these guys need the same extra heating?
