The first hedgehog I ever had, has a very cute bonding story with me. The little bugger was suuuuper scared and not used to humans so I decided to put her on my desk while I did homework so she could get used to me. We spent like an hour there before she started to move around but she still wouldn’t let me touch her or move. So she was walking around and I she sees the ledge she smells it and turns around, and I’m like: OMG Shes so smart. Then, I hear a sound and it’s her on the ledge again, and I see her just fall. I managed to catch her just in time, it hurt and i got a scar on my hand where one of her quills pierced. But then we locked eyes and she liked me and we became best friends.

This video had perfect timing. I just rescued a hedgehog 2 days ago from terrible conditions (20 gallon glass tank, no heat, cedar bedding, no wheel..etc 😢) we have a vet appointment today. the heating situation has been a process I started at 76 degrees but she literally pushed everything to the cold side of the cage so I bumped down a degree (75) we will see how she likes it

I got my hedgie two weeks ago and she was almost in the same conditions. She was on paper bedding though. And the only place she had to hide was a tiny box that she has to squeeze in. She has a huge Midwest brand cage that is almost 3x the size of her old one. She has a litter box and a wheel now along with a proper hide.

Haley Elkins you need to do more research of breeders near you or you can buy one and they can ship one to you but you would have to pick it up at the airport research “cove exotics” I’m getting mine from them and their affordable surprisingly for a breeder they have a Facebook page but reply fast on their contact email!

Thank you for talking about the complications of breeding hedgehogs. Since i work at a petstore, i get asked so often about this or about where to find hedgehogs. Around my state they're not popular but sometimes i get an inexperienced person saying their new baby hedgehog just died and they don't know why. It's like you said, they have a neurological disease that can get passed down. So the so called breeder just doesn't have much experience with this. I also follow rehoming groups and people say their hedgehog had an "Accidental litter" which is very hard to believe when the person keeps selling a new litter every so often to beginner owners who don't get a care sheet or info when buying these guys. It's also hard around here finding vets that will see Hedgehogs and their vet bills are expensive. Something new time owners don't know much about. But i'm glad there are people like you who educate the public about these exotic animals. So thanks for the info for future generations of possible Hedgehog owners or admirers. :)

Hello! My friend left the country for a holiday and ended up getting stuck due to Corona and her hedgehog had no where to go so when she asked me of course I said yes as otherwise i dont know what would have hapened to it!. I knew absoulutely nothing about them and for about a year was just following what the hedgehogs owner had told me which i assumed was correct! turns out ive been doing everthing wrong and i am so glad i found your channel thank you so much for all the help you have provided!

I never held another person’s hedgehog before getting mine cause i dont know anyone else with one. I did do some research but probably not enough although I’m very happy with my decision and with about a week of having my hedgehog she’s already warmed up to me and no longer balls up and only sticks her quills up when i wake her up. She has been amazing but i did find out i got her earlier than hedgehogs are supposed to be adopted which is sad but she seems to be doing great and seems pretty happy too.

All of these videos about hedgehogs helps me so much cause my mother said make a report on them of what they need and what they eat. When I started looking at it I was really interested and then started looking for stuff in the cage, heating supplies, food, and etc. But I really did learn a lot from all these videos and will help me in the long run and I will always be grateful to this channel cause it helps me understand hedgehogs way more then I did before. Hedgehogs sound like the best pet for me. I’m in the 8th grade, so the lifespan is excellent, they’re the most adorable thing, I stay up late, and I don’t have any other small animals. (I have a dog but he isn’t allowed upstairs.)

Do you feed your hedgehog superworms or do you think they are to big? I have always had medium size mealworm farms cause my leopard gecko seemed to go better with that size VS the bigger ones. He has passed now and I was pondering getting a farm of superworms. I am getting a hedgehog in a few weeks once she/he is old enough to leave the mom. I had one growing up and am finally ready to get another (took a while to get my own place and afford it). While it is growing up the smaller ones would be fed to it but as an adult would the superworms be to big for their tiny snouts?

That’s why a thermostat and thermometer are important to have so you can keep the temperature controlled and be sure what the temp is in their housing.

Not sure if you read comments. But I have couple questions as I'm planning to get my first pet hedgehog. How quiet I have to be myself during the day? I have understood they require a lot of sleep and should not be waken. Can I do my normal activities if they sleep in the same room as I spend most of my time?

I behave normally around my hedgehogs, including making noise. I think it’s important that hedgehogs aren’t afraid of sounds so it’s best to expose them to them.

So I got my hedgehog about 5 days ago. I watched all your videos about them before getting it and researched a lot. It has helped so much. But I have to admit I'm having a hard time. He's really really shy. He is able to sleep in my lap now and I think he knows my scent but he still pops and hisses. But omg it HURTS to pick him up. He's only 8 weess old. I know it is gonna take time and I am going to keep trying. Even though he pops and hisses everytime I take him out of his cage, can I still give hi a bath and cut his nails? Will he let me?

Try using a piece of fleece to pick him up till you get used to the quills. Avoid gloves so you don’t block your scent, but using something to periodically protect your hands is fine. 5 days is no time at all for them, so keep on trying :) He’s young so he’s at a good age to get him really bonded with you if you’re consistent! And you should be able to go ahead and give him a bath, yes. Most hedgehogs won’t ball up in water.

Is it necessary to keep them on a light schedule? I read in a book (I’m preparing to get my first hedgie) that you should get a lamp with a timer so they stay on a specific schedule however, I haven’t really seen much about that anywhere else. Do you think it’s a necessity?

I keep mine on a light schedule because in the winter we get very little natural light. So I just have a normal lamp on a cheap light timer so that they get 12hrs or light and 12hrs of night.
