Bought a cambuckle strap today to hang my Jeep hard top from the garage ceiling, and it slipped under the load (had to tie a double figure 8 behind the buckle to prevent it from falling). This only happened on one of the 4 buckles ... I believe it was a design flaw with the spring tension or teeth pattern. But that said, cambuckles CAN slip, so always tie a safety knot if your cargo matters to you.

Project Farm did a video on these.... The nylon straps actually stretch, mostly during the first 30 seconds after tightening. Most straps went from around 300lbs down to 250lbs.

When the Motorcycle Tie down flaps in the wind and over bumps. EACH HIT ON THE CAM BUCKLE RELEASES THE SPRING LEVER, RELEASING THE STRAP. I'm trying to figure out a solution now. (40 years late) Thanks anyway.

Yeah, nah. The title told me I've used these wrongly all my life. Nope. Didn't appreciate being dissed either. Tighten the pull strap, shuffle and shake the load, tighten, repeat until no slack appears. Old tech that is still used today is often still used for a good reason, it's tried and tested. Now you go back and show me that spring of yours holding the 300kg tension without the help of the webbing shroud. Who's the caveman? Me, and delighted about it.

They get loose because you can't tighten a cambuckle tight enough to keep your load from moving. That's why people use ratchet straps. You need to figure out how to make the bungee stronger so you can put it on a ratchet strap.

I agree completely. Try and tell a truck driver not to use a ratchet tie down. Worse yet, tell him you want him to use a strap with a piece of rubber as part of the tie down mechanism. Let’s say his load is a pile of round drill stem. Not a fricken chance. Now I understand these loads are large and very heavy but let’s say you want to tie your atv in the box of the truck. You cinch it down with ratchet straps so there’s no movement. In this scenario you can pound down rough roads with little to no movement of the ATV. Now use the four straps with the rubber. On every bump the rubber portion is going to stretch allowing the ATV to move both left and right while moving forward or backwards. In Canada you are completely forbidden from using any type of rubber band as the primary source of securement. Need I say why.

If a load shifts it wasn’t loaded and or positioned properly in the first place. I’ve never had issues with ratchet straps whatsoever.
