They should refit them for a close air support role similar to US A-10 warthogs. You never know what future conflicts will require. Treetop approach to support ground troops would be terrifying to the enemy.

Its not suitable for CAS. It doesn't have the maneuverability required to survive that type of role. Most of the airframes were also very close to their service life meaning that new airframes would have been needed. It's essentially a mach 2 flying brick. Very good a low level attacks, either nuclear or conventional against rear area targets. Or against slow moving bombers, as long as they're not escorted by fighters. The Harrier was a much better CAS aircraft, good payload and can turn on a sixpence.

The Tornado F3 had greater range 1,853 kilometers (F-104 - 670 Km) and so could loiter for a much longer period usually at the Iceland-Norway gap. It was no slouch could hit Mach 2.3 at 30,000 ft.

The RAF Tornados were trained to fly nuclear strikes at 150 feet. When they were deployed to Desert Storm they had to fly higher. At 250 feet to make safe delivery of the soon to be outlawed JP233 airfield bomblet system. To put that in context F-15s and other allied aircraft providing cover flew at 20,000 feet. When Saddam's air bases had been pretty much disabled in the first week the Tonkas switched to Laser guided munition directed by Buccaneers or with their own laser pods allowing the use of Paveway IV guided bombs. The 61 deployed RAF Tornado GR1s flew some 2,535 sorties employing 106 JP233s, and dropping 3,631 unguided 1,000-pound bombs, and 1,079 laser-guided bombs. They also flew 140 reconnaissance sorties and fired some 113 Air-Launched Anti-Radiation Missiles (ALARMs) on SEAD missions. RAF crews were suffering a loss every 80 sorties because of the nature of the low level flights compared to one every 750 for US sorties operating at higher levels.

Just disable these garbage cuts from your feed. In 1968, West Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Canada formed a working group for the Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA). As the partner nations' requirements were so diverse, it was decided to develop a single aircraft that could perform a variety of missions that were previously undertaken by a fleet of different aircraft. Britain later joined the MRCA group.

But it was a very dangerous time for America and the West. There were terrorist cells all over the Middle East. INCLUDING IRAQ. Saddam had capabilities of obtaining WMDs and he was not being compliant with (I forget the organization’s name) but whoever was responsible for checking for nuclear facilities or manufacturing plants. He wasn’t letting them into Iraq. So what, do you think we should have just took Saddam at his word? America was not about to let another 9/11 happen. He was already an enemy and we should have finished the job in the Gulf War 10 years prior
