I'm glad to see that the Tornado class hasn't evolved into foils. It's a beautiful and very technical boat.Greetings from Cadiz, Spain

Joe - based on the epic contribution you have made to Cat sailing and the public over so long, you deserve the very best in these worlds. You are a legend - go go go!!

im amazed how fast that boat goes! im used to sailing small monohull dinghys, lasers etc. in 6 knts a laser is pretty much stationary. looks fun!

Nice video. Things have changed quite a bit since I started sailing Tornado’s in 1967. We had 2 boats KC6 and KC77 in Ottawa Ontario. Canada.

That looks like a very smooth sailing boat. I have been reading up on the Tornado series of catamarans. They definitely require an experienced sailor!

Yes for sure, certainly the most difficult boat that I've raced - to get the top % of speed
@Winston9055 ай бұрын
congrats guys good boat handling skills good speed. working your way up that pyramid . are you allowed compass onboard? . need that wind data via some math and a grease pencil to track it. looking for those shifts and getting in phase with them . Looking forward to the rest of the series. 👏

Yes, that would be very handy to have that data.

@@JoyriderTV glad there were none around! Thanks so much for your videos. As a dinghy sailor, I had my first catamaran experience last week on a course in France! Little wind, unfortunately. But still fun. I always look to your videos to confirm or otherwise if I am doing things right. Your stuff is comprehensive. These regatta videos are really excellent for those wondering what a race involves too. Good luck, and fair winds!
@laser43985 ай бұрын
Something else I saw which I might have done differently. Upwind the tell tales on the jib looked like you were going for height. My dinghy has wings so there is some leverage to be had, nothing like a Tornado of course. But in a dinghy if you can, try and use some of that leverage it is usually faster (we are talking a couple of degrees) but I find "leaning" on the jib is fruitful in those lighter conditions. My only experience of a cat is a few goes on a Hobie 16 so I might be talking rubbish.

Thanks for the tips! We were going for height when we had to stay out of dirty wind.

Don't forget to look forward when u gybe...!
@JoyriderTV5 ай бұрын
Top tip - thanks/
@laser43985 ай бұрын
Thanks, very interesting. On your way into the windward mark do you not decide if you are headed or lifted? I sail an asymmetric dinghy and its essential to be on the correct gybe as you leave the mark and of course the correct gybe is the headed gybe. So if lifted as you approach the windward mark, a gybe set is required. Headed simply bear away and hoist. Sorry if I'm mentioning something you were considering but I didn't hear any discussion between the two of you.
@JoyriderTV5 ай бұрын
Part of our downwind strategy is to get a clear lane - so if there's heavy traffic going one way - we choose not to follow. That and going for the stronger wind.

Raced against Reg White in the day. Can never fully explain the performance of the Tornado to sailors who haven't experienced it.
