Yes the heat rises and the cold air spirals down towards the ground, yes the sunset is a contrast to the wicked dark clouds of spinning death..The midnight tornadoes are as frightening as Freddie Gruger in your house, no lights and all you hear is the scrapping of his blades on the walls and ceiling. The night tornadoes lit up by lightning is as spooky as it is the only positive element that gives a person a fighting chance to gather where not to go or where the twister is heading. With the seconds in between the lightning giving an update of mass and direction the pitch black is an adult diaper moment.

It's all about getting as close as possible without getting destroyed. The dangerous thing is how sometimes you're already in the tornado and don't even know it.
@ArchTeryx003 жыл бұрын
El Reno especially was that way. It was extremely deceptive; a relatively small condensation funnel and rain curtains hid a MUCH LARGER tornadic circulation, loaded with invisible - and lethal - suction vortices. There's a reason it killed four storm chasers. The ones in this video were quite lucky to escape with their lives. Brewster and Drake's car had a suction vortex right in front of it - that's what was chewing apart the building and throwing debris into his car. He wasn't in RFD. He was in the circulation!
@suzannecrowe77753 жыл бұрын
@@ArchTeryx00 ~ I’ll look it up, but what’s an RFD?
@ArchTeryx003 жыл бұрын
@@suzannecrowe7775 RFD = Rear Flank Downdraft. The long story short is that what goes up must come down - all that warm air sucked into the tornado's (and the storm's) updraft eventually cools and falls back to earth as strong straight line winds. This is often felt behind strong tornadoes because of the sheer volume of air the tornado is sucking up. It is thought that tornadoes are occluded (die) when the RFD eventually wraps around the funnel, sheathing it in cold air and cutting off the warm air that fuels it. Near a big tornado, it is *frighteningly* easy to confuse the straight line winds of RFD, the straight line winds of air flowing INTO the tornado (inflow), and the winds whirling around the large funnel. This one was over two and a half miles wide - at the funnel wall, the winds WERE essentially straight line winds, and not enough to blow over cars. But whirling around the main tornado are a whole demon's host of smaller tornadoes, "suction vortices," which can increase the power of the tornado up to 25x at that point. Some storm chasers hit by the El Reno tornado survived. Others, though, were hit by a suction vortex, and it ripped their cars apart, killing them immediately or badly injuring them. Getting hit by a suction vortex has been likened to getting whacked by a giant with a baseball bat riding a high speed train.

I'm from the land of 🌀 Hurricanes ( Hawaii). I have always assumed that the part of the Mainland (we affectionately call it the "Mad-land"), known as Tornado Alley had all its homes built with basements or storm shelters. After working with visitors from these states, they tell me that not all or even half of the homes are equipped this way. Most of the people I spoke with said the shelters/basements added a lot $$ in construction costs.
@crazycatlady56292 жыл бұрын
Here in my part of Tennessee, the ground isn't suitable for basements. We almost got hit by that tornado that destroyed Mayfield kentucky. We are asking our town to build a community storm shelter for us, but it's unlikely that they will do it.
@LouiseStastny2 жыл бұрын
Basements were made for places that are cold and were built below the frostline. Storm cellars were not the same. Most people made their own with a trapdoor and small shelter. Basements were made in areas that didn't flood. That's all. Same as bodies in graves, some are above ground because of flood prone areas.

Not until the last 20yrs. Many derided basements as "fraidy shelters" until the May 3 1999 Bridge creek - Moore tornado. Btw the average in home shelter runs between 5-10 k, and there are grants available. My oldest daughter lives in Bartlesville, Ok, near Tulsa, and her and her husband insisted about building an in home shelter. They've never had. A direct hit, but in the 18yrs they lived there , they've had 2-3 close calls

I couldn't disagree more!!! That was the El Reno tornado. That is the one that Tim Samarus (hope I spelled right), his son Paul, and Carl Young were killed in. Tim was known as one of the most knowledgeable and safety conscious chasers ever. The problem is that ALL the chasers that day had NO CLUE it was the actual tornado and NOT RFD's. The guy yelling tried to convince himself it was RFD's, because in his mind, the was NO WAY it was a 2.5+ mile in diameter tornado! I probably would have had a heartattack. The reason the other people in the car didn't panic, is because they had no clue just how dire the situation was, because rhe guy in front passenger seat was the expert. TBH, he did a GREAT JOB saving all their lives! He made it clear how bad they needed to get out of there, without giving too much info that would make the driver and guy panic!

That was the El Reno tornado and they almost died here like the twistex team. You and me we would have panicked too if we would have been chased by a F5 tornado with winds up to 486 km/h and 2,6 miles in diameter that grew to this size in just 30 seconds with a forward motion of up to 89 km/h that surprised the chasers by changing direction abruptly and went north east instead of south east. 8 poeple lost their lives all in vehicles. And there are a couple of videos that shows how other storm chasers ran for their lives in this tornado and there's a video that shows in an animation the movements of all chasers that were involved and where their cars were at the exact time and the exact place in comparison to the movement and growth of the tornado. In this animation it is clearly to see how the tornado chased the chasers and how close it was for many and how lucky many were to escape the tornado in the last minute. Rip Tim Samaras, Paul Samaras and Carl Young.

I always thought that "Twister Sisters" video with the formation of the tornado where the funnel touching the roadway was like less than 1 foot in diameter was just one of the coolest videos out there. Then later that guy says, "drillbit" and one of the ladies says "drillbit?". Them ladies don't need to know the jargon. They bring home the video goods! (c^-')b

Give the screamers a break. Their sympathetic nervous system has kicked in and the fight or flight response takes over. Nobody should be held accountable for what comes out of their mouths when the adrenal gland is on overload. Ask any soldier what happened to them the first time they were in live combat. It is not like in the movies. Only movie I have seen that comes slightly close to capturing the real fear of live Combat, or a life threatening experience, is Saving Private Ryan. Unless you have been there, you have no clue.

The 1st one was very similar to what I experienced in NC was going to go on break from after seeeing a rainbow thinking all must be well now to seeing a quick spin up and running back inside then learning a tornado destroyed a building 5 miles up the road a few minutes before 😱

Back in the 70s and early eighties I was a chaser, along with a friend. He was not as excitable as the passenger you have. Never understood the need to scream in the confines of a vehicle. Good footage, nonetheless. The Dalton, MN detail was spectacular!

Nebraska seems to have it's strongest tornados in late May through June, but such is life in the alley.

Tornado alley in recent years seems to be moving towards the SE US. Mississippi and Alabama have seen a large number of EF2+ type storms in the last 20yrs. The # in Ok/ks has seen a decrease in the last decade

I saw a tornado in the early 90s in Huntsville . it's path went north up HY 231 . We went back to the damaged area where we saw a z28 camaro stuck in a block wall 20 feet high . Whites burg plaza was where the worst damage occurred . The steal poles were bent all different ways . 100 feet from all these poles was a waffle house and none of the big plate glass windows had no damage. I couldn't understand how that could be with all the debris that war flying around . 18 people lost their life on that tragic day . Very sad day.

I’ll never understand why chasers don’t stop to check if someone was at a home just destroyed, like the last tornado, and check to see if anyone was home, or if so, are they ok. Yeah, I get it, they want there video and pics. But they are putting profit or notoriety before life. And before someone says, well, maybe they aren’t trained in first aid. Anyone can put a towel over a bleeding head, arm, foot or whatever. More than likely of the home is destroyed like that, they, if their alive, probably don’t have a clue where they’re cell phone is. And don’t say maybe they don’t want to get sued for hurting someone more. Every state has a law that says if you are untrained, unless you do something really harmful, or stupid, people attempting to assist an Injured person cannot be sued. I just hope and pray that nothing happens to their family while they are out chasing, and somebody refuses to possibly save their lives.
