Hurricanes, flooding and fires happen yearly in places with high home insurance, we typically don't get this many tornadoes in Iowa. This year is probably the most ever reported on record.

I'm 35 years old. Lived in Iowa my whole life. Never seen a tornado. Neither has either of my parents nor any of my grandparents nor any of my siblings or any of my cousins. The town I grew up in nor the one I live in now has ever been hit by a tornado in the 160+ years they have existed. That would be pretty silly if houses were cheaper because of something that has never happened. That's like saying houses here are cheaper because of asteroids or planes falling out of the sky. I would imagine your house is just as likely if not more so to get wiped out as mine.

I am not from the United States, where I live there are no tornadoes. What I don't understand, is why in places where the risk of being hit by tornadoes is almost 100%, there is no legislature to disallow constructing with materials like timber! Like, I understand it's cheaper, but for god's sake...
@eddie5z518
@eddie5z518 Ай бұрын
Because the people who live in these areas can't afford homes built from stronger materials. Also the chance of getting hit by a tornado is insanely rare. There may be 1000+ of them a year in the US, but the US is a giant country so there is no point in building every house to EF5 standards.
@dropkick79

A lot of the homes in rural Iowa have been there a long time as they are small farming communities. In addition, with the exception of the Parkersburg tornado, I don't recall the State getting direct hits as much as it has the past few years. I've lived in Des Moines my entire life, just 2 miles outside of Pleasant Hill. The brief touchdown there earlier this month was the first I can remember other than an occasional straight-line winds. It would seem the weather patterns are changing though, so may need to adapt for sure. Would be nice, outside of the cost.

There's no such thing as 100% chance. Odd comment.
@kvm1992

Timber is not the problem and homes are not just made out of timber alone. For being a relatively lightweight building material, wood outperforms even steel when it comes to breaking length (or self-support length). Simply put, it can support its own weight better, which allows for larger spaces and fewer necessary supports in some building designs. Tornados tear through anything in its path. The solution is making homes and buildings tornado proof by designing with more curvature with exterior walls and windows that's impact resistant.

Absolutely nothing. If you care to read the Wikipedia article about it, you'll see it is just a scientific instrument that has nothing to do with weather; it was built in 1993. I hope you know that there were tornadoes before. Also, Russia and Norway have similar devices, and you know they are not plagued by tornadoes. If anything this is the consequence of having thrown tons of CO2 to the atmosphere for over a century: the climate changed, weather follows suite. That's why all those people are protesting, for stopping the pollution, that the change doesn't worsen, that it doesn't become irreversible. I highly recommend you to google 'climate change causes - effects.' Good luck ✌
