Thanks for posting this! Most of the videos on KZbin are of the newer style and the screw placement to remove the cver is different and I couldn't figure it out on my older unit. With your video I was able to disassemble mine and clean the carburetor. Mine has chugged revving high and low for years shortly after having it serviced for $80+ after it wouldn't start so I just used it since it still ran sufficiently. Now it is running right for the first time in 3 or 4 years, Thanks!

20 feet into the first use of my brand-new Toro, I hit a metal-cable dog tieout, wrapped around the axle several times, wasn't about to unwrap itself. This video gave a non-DIY guy what he needed to know to get it fixed! THANX!!!

These newer 4-cycles are so straightforward. You should really do one on the Toro single stage snowblowers with the R-Tek 2-cycle 141cc engine. Models include 2450, 3650, 210, 221QE/221QR. There are zillions of these in circulation and NO videos showing complete disassembly. I'm trying to change the coil on on my 221QE and it appears that I have to remove the engine from its mounting in order to remove the engine cover to access the coil. That's a little daunting. A video for this would surely help. Thanks.

exactly because thats why i came here too for the older RTek i had to strip it all down to get off the faulty electric start and had to break from working on it for a week now i dont know where any of the screws go LOL :P i have model 38584 (221QE)

@@johnniec2861 Turns out I actually did change the coil on it. Didn't have to remove the engine itself, but had to remove the engine shroud, which involved having to take off the wheels and axles to access a bolt on the back of the engine that holds on that shroud. Needless to say, I did not put that bolt back on. No way I was going through that hell again. But my machine was a lemon from the beginning. No one was ever able to diagnose or solve the problems, and my theory was that the engine was either cracked or warped. I changed every part without success. I have since given up on it and am parting it out. I know others have had success with the Toro R-Tek, but even when I've heard them on others' videos they never sounded right to me--always as if they're about to stall. IMO, one of the best 2-cycle engines made was the Tecumseh HSK-850 and variants. If you get exasperated, find an old 2-cycle MTD, Craftsman, Simplicity, Deere and others (basically all the same) with this engine for peanuts and it will run rings around the R-Tek. I really liked the Toro's great chute mechanism, but it's useless if the machine doesn't work.

Hi I have trouble unscrew the two nuts for the carburetor cover. What size of socket did you use?

+Robert Liszi Typcially you have to remove all the shrouds and covers to get to the bolts. There arn't usually special tools.

How hard is it to loosen the auger pulley bolt when it has had thread locking fluid applied to it?

Depending on the strength of thread locking fluid applied to the bolt, you should be able to get it loose with a wrench or an impact wrench. If those don't work you may need to apply heat before trying to get it loose.

I need to access and clean the carburetor; any advice on that? I cannot get the engine to start.

I'm in the same rut and not super mechanical, but if you go to about 3:50 in you can see them take off the cover and the governor. I'm sure you also need to unhook a fuel line with a pair of pliers to release the clips. Other than that, it should be fairly straight forward. Just pull it off, clean it up (including the seals) and re-assemble. Of course, I'm also a bit of an idiot, so I may have that all wrong.

@@Luxowell I actually had no trouble getting at the carb, once I hit Sears for some deep sockets (Closing sale...so very sad.) I have removed and cleaned the carb as best I can, without jabbing anything into the jets, but with lots of carb cleaner and air. Cleaned it twice, and got to the point of starting the engine with several pumps of the primer bulb, and then it dies. I could get it started for a few seconds with carb spray or ether, but getting it to start with actual gas from the primer seemed like progress. Of course, I also drained the old gas (which was a heavy mixture of old gas, new gas, Sta-bil and SeaFoam-- but didn't work!) Then I found a new carb online for $14. How much is time worth? Seemed the best route... It's on its way, and I am hoping that does the trick!

Might be the choke or a problem with either air or gas delivery to the engine. I would check out the carburetor and also the sparkplug.
